~Chapter twelve: Lunatics and other forms of madness~
Isis went through a different kind of self-torture after Severus dumped her. She denied food and slept even less then usual. Sirius heard her crying in an empty classroom one night, but Remus who had heard her too shook his head. Sirius nodded in understanding and kept walking.
Sirius looked down the table at her every morning. She seemed pale and wary. Sirius couldn’t help but wonder what thoughts were creeping in her mind. He wanted to tell her that he loved her, but he knew the time was wrong. He had to wait for Isis’s heart to heal.
Severus seemed to be going through a change too. He was snottier then ever and just cast cold stares at the Gryffindor table at every meal. Sirius couldn’t help but notice that no one ate with Severus anymore and he seemed to be putting some weight. Remus had noticed but remained quiet about his suspicions. James and Peter however were more then happy to share their thoughts.
“I think that his parents are behind it.” James said. “You know how some old money pure bloods are.” He blushed. “No offence mate.” He added looking at Sirius.
“None taken Prongs. I know how my family is, but I don’t think that Evans is old money or he wouldn’t have changed his name and Lily would be a lot more popular.”
Peter looked at his shoes. “Maybe they want to make a name for themselves. It’s bad enough being related to muggles by marriage that an elf in the family would just be the death of the plans.”
Sirius put his head back. “I don’t know what it was, but frankly it’s his loss. Isis is an amazing woman.”
“Don’t forget pretty.” Peter said.
“Pretty sexy you mean.” James added. “I mean not that I’m looking all that closely, but she has a nice body. I mean that ass is just…”
Sirius put his hand up. “We know James.” He said grinning. “God knows that I would love to smack the damn thing, but she’s in a right state now. I don’t think it’d be proper.”
“It wouldn’t be proper even if she was fit.” Remus added joining them. He had obviously been trying one of Madam Pomfry’s experimental werewolf potions down in the hospital wing. “She is my baby cousin, and I would have to kill you if you ever hurt her.”
“You two are like brother and sister aren’t you?” Sirius asked.
“Since when is she a baby?” James asked. “She’s only two months younger then you.”
“She’s always going to be my baby cousin as far as I’m concerned.” Remus said with his smile. “Besides that’s not why I came to talk to you.”
“You need a reason to talk to us now?” Peter asked with a grin.
“Was that sarcasm? From Peter?” Remus asked slack jawed.
Peter grinned. “Maybe.”
Sirius rolled his eyes. “What’s up Moony?”
“I want to know what we should do this month. I mean it’s only two days until the full moon and we haven’t planned anything because Sirius and I have been occupied.”
“It’s alright that you’re looking out for Isis.” James said. “I think the girls mean well, but they just seem to make her more miserable.”
“No.” Remus said, “It’s not that the girls make her miserable it’s just that they’re her best friends. They won’t let go until Severus is swinging from a rope on the Whomping Willow.”
Sirius looked at Isis. She was sitting with Lily talking to Nina’s head in the fire. Nina was talking about the full moon too. Sirius found it rather odd, but remembered reading that Liberty, put a lot of stock in Divination because so many elves went to school there. “Must just be for class.” Sirius mumbled to himself.
Isis looked at Nina. “So what’s your transfiguration assignment?”
“We’re doing in depth study of anigmi.” Nina replied. “We need to find people that turn into large animals on the register.”
“How large?” Isis asked.
“Wild cats or bigger.” Nina said with a meaningful wink.
Isis nodded. “So you have interesting homework this week.”
Nina nodded. “You need to come see me sometime.”
“I know.” Isis said pretending to stir the coals so that she could conceal a wink. “So I’ll talk to you on Friday?”
Nina nodded. “Yep, see you Friday. I’ll try and wake Zoë and Phoebe so that they can talk to you as well.”
“Thanks.” Isis said.
Remus looked over at Nina’s head as she pulled it out of the fire. She couldn’t have been prettier, but she lived so far away and Remus knew that no romance was worth the risk of biting who ever he was with. He sighed as he buried his nose in the Daily Prophet again. “Anyone know a five letter word for magically inclined female?” He asked.
Sirius shook his head and sighed.
Remus looked up. “Does anyone know the answer?”
Even Peter shook his head, “It’s a witch mate.”
“Oh that does fit!” Remus said with a relieved laugh.
Lily looked over at him. “Remus if I didn’t know better I’d think that school was getting to you.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“She’s just saying that you’re a little dim sweetie.” Isis said pulling her voodoo doll out of her bag and tossing it into the fire. “Burn baby burn.” She murmured.
“… And I’m the one they lock up once a month.” Remus whispered.
Sirius and James laughed.
“You can’t say that she’s completely mad yet.” James said, “She never actually used it.”
“I guess it’s better to be cracked then to be a lunatic.” Sirius said with a look at Remus.
“Muggles…” He said flippantly. “Muggles, the lot of you.”

On Friday morning Isis seemed to be in a better mood then she had been in for weeks and Lily even got her to come to breakfast and eat some sausages.
Isis took one link from the plate and ate it; it was the first decent morsel of food she’d eaten in two weeks. Before she could ask for another Lily had the whole plate sitting between Isis and herself.
“I thought you might want another one.” She said with a smile.
Isis smiled wanly and took at least seven more.
Sirius looked at Isis. It seemed like she was finally getting back to normal. Sirius smiled a bit. He couldn’t help but think that soon enough he’d be able to ask her out and get his chance with Isis.
Sirius made his way to sit next to her and James sat next to him.
Lily looked upset that James was sitting in such close proximity to her, but he didn’t talk to her. For a minute Isis thought she saw a trace of hurt in Lily’s eyes, but she pulled out an astrology book and ignored everyone else.
Isis looked at Sirius, “Thanks for not taking advantage of the fact that I’ve been so upset. I have a lot of respect for you not asking me out before I’m ready.”
Sirius’s eyes dropped. “I’m glad you feel that way.” Sirius said letting his hair fall into his eyes. “Do you still like me?” He added quietly.
“Yes.” Isis said.
Sirius looked up. She was beaming from ear to ear.
“I’m glad to see you smiling again.” Sirius said tweaking Isis’s nose. “You’re very cute when you smile.”
“Oh Isis!” James interrupted. “Sorry to interrupt mate, but Isis don’t forget we have practice tonight. I want to see how well you fly instead of just staying on the ground. I already arranged it with Matthes.”
Dean Matthes was the very burly and quiet sixth year quddich captain for Gryffindor. Dean had been keeping Isis on the ground for the past few practices because he said that James was fit and that he would like to use James as much as possible since they were on such a tight schedule with Hufflepuff breathing down their necks for time on the quddich pitch.
“Thanks” Isis said. “I’d like to be able to fly tonight.”
“What kid of broom do you have?” Sirius asked.
Isis smiled “A Shooting Star Nebula.”
“No way!” Sirius said. “I’m still on a Shooting Star White Dwarf.”
James cleared his throat. “May I remind you that I’m still on a Clean Sweep 3? I wish a had a four, the new Clean Sweep can out strip a Nebula.”
“It’s not the speed that matters James. It’s the reflexes and the skill. You could have one of those new things a Nimbus, or what ever they’re called, and you’d still fly the same.”
“Nimbus will never be as good as Shooting Stars.” Sirius said. “Neither will Clean Sweeps.”
“You’re deluding yourself if you think that you could possibly beat me in a broom race.” James said.
“Race the brooms and I won’t hesitate to give you detentions.” Lily said from behind her book.
“Give us detentions and I’ll start harassing you again Evans.” James said.
Lily put down her book and glared at James. “You don’t scare me Potter. I know the only reason you want to race Sirius is because the only place you look better then him is in the air.”
“Why don’t you tell me how you really feel Evans?" James said dangerously.
“Fine!” Lily shouted. “I think you’re an arrogant prick who doesn’t know the difference between decency and pure-blood mania! I think that some one like you should be in Slytherin calling me a mudblood and getting it over with. It’s just a game for you isn’t it Potter? Piss off the mudblood!” Lily then slammed her book shut and left the Great Hall.
Isis sat wide-eyed. She’d never seen Lily explode like that, evidently no one had, even Dumbledore looked surprised from his seat at the high table.
“I better go see if she’s okay.” Isis said sliding from her chair.
Sirius nodded. James looked upset and guilty. “I think I’ll go back to the dorm until class.” He said moodily.
Isis went out to the entrance hall and caught up with Lily.
“What was that?” Isis asked. “I’ve never seen you do anything like that before.”
“I hate them.” Lily sobbed. “I hate all pure-bloods. Severus hurt you and this morning he he… he had his friend Malfoy smack my butt. I know that’s why Potter does it. It’s a thrill for them to make us muggle borns feel unwelcome.”
“James honestly likes you Lily.” Isis said. “He thinks your beautiful, smart, down to earth, and thinks you deserve better then how you’re treated. Unfortunately he is a male and thinks that he’s the shit, but…”
“The shit?” Lily asked.
“It’s an American expression, it means he thinks he’s the best.”
“Oh.” Lily said. “I thought it was something bad.”
“No.” Isis explained. “It’s only bad if you are a shit.”
Lily hugged Isis. “Sometimes I just wish that I had never come here. Maybe Petunia’s right. I mean I’m a freak in the muggle world and I’m a freak here.”
“You’re a freak?” Isis said genially. “At least you don’t speak a weird language and have ears that can pick up talk radio from Sweden.”
Lily laughed again. “Isis, you’re too much, you know that don’t you.”
“I try.” Isis said turning on her brightest smile. “Do you just want to go up to the north tower for class?”
Lily nodded. “Good idea.”
Isis and Lily waited maybe ten minutes before Professor Morris opened up the classroom. Isis wrapped her Gryffindor scarf closer to her neck and sat next to Lily.
“Do you like James at all?” Isis asked.
“Yes.” Lily admitted blushing. “He’s really smart and nice…” Lily broke off to sigh.
James walked through the door with Sirius close behind unnoticed.
“…But you have to admit the James can be an ass sometimes.” Lily finished.
Sirius looked at James. He looked as if someone had shot his dog. “Are you alright?”
“Fine.” James answered shortly.
Sirius sat down and James sat with a thud and his chair gave way and he landed on the floor.
Lily and Isis turned around in enough time to see Sirius taking James’s hand and pulling him out of the hole that he had made when the chair broke.
“Oh sorry about that lads.” Professor Morris said with a simpering tone. “I had hoped that Mr. Filch had fixed that chair.” Professor Morris conjured up another comfy looking chair and James tested it before sitting down.
“This day just went from bad to worse.” James muttered. “I’ve decided if Lily thinks that my pursing her is a game then that’s exactly what it will be.”
