Spell Master
The warm glow of the twilight sky, filtered through Dumbledore’s open window. The cool, autumn air kissed his skin as he sat at his desk, and in the background, he had one of his favorite pieces of chamber music playing, softly.
It was a beautiful evening, he had to admit, but the Headmaster could not enjoy it’s splendor. His thoughts rendered on other things. Like his past, and the choices he had made in his life and in the lives of other people, as well.
Albus turned his gaze away from the celestial wonders and looked at the Hogwarts Coat of Arms. The four Houses were equally represented, but like always when he looked upon it, his gaze fell first to Gryffindor. His house.
The Headmaster knew that he cared for all of his students, but he also knew that he favored the students of the Lion House above the rest. Those cubs were special to him because they reminded him of himself. The aged wizards gaze then fell on Slytherin, and unconsciously, his eyes narrowed a bit. Still, after all these years, his heart was still hardened toward them.
In Albus‘s, never vocalized opinion, most of the students of the Snake House, were rich, spoilt, brats, whose parents treated them like glass and gave them everything they demanded whether they deserved it or not. And in his opinion, it had always been like that. Slytherin’s were cruel to anyone who they deemed of lower status, and they reveled in exploiting other peoples misfortune.
Albus knew this first hand, for he was subjected to their cruelty, so many years ago. And still, even in recent years, Slytherins are not afraid to bring up Dumbledore’s family’s sordid past.
The Dumbledore family was pureblood, but not aristocratic. They weren’t wealthy. They owned no land, and had no money. But his parents tried their damnedest to provide for their children. They may not have had financial wealth, but they were rich in love. And his parents loved him dearly as well as his other four siblings.
His mother was a maid, at the Finnegan Castle, and his father was the grounds keeper. However, between the two of them, they barely made enough to keep their family fed. They couldn’t even afford to send his older siblings to school. If it wasn’t for his own ingenuity, Albus wouldn’t have been able to go either. However, unlike the rest of his siblings, Albus was determined to get an education.
So as a young boy, he acquired odd jobs here-and-there and saved up for his tuition. Unfortunately, when he reached the age of eleven, he still hadn’t earned enough money to attend Hogwarts. It was his parents employer, the wealthy, muggleborn, philanthropist named Mr Finnegan, who was very impressed with the little Albus’s drive, who gave him the money for a full scholarship.
Albus never forgot that act of kindness and vowed then-and-there that he would always do what he could to ensure muggleborn equality.
The young Albus was on cloud nine when he stepped on the Hogwarts Express because, finally, his dream had come true. However, it wasn’t long after did Dumbledore’s dream become a nightmare.
Why?
Because of Ulysses Dynamo Snape, Severus’s great grandfather.
Ulysses Snape was the Draco Malfoy of his time, but he was a hundred times worse. Like the Malfoys, the Snape family was, and still is, rich in title, land, wealth and the blood of powerful magical creatures. Ulysses was almost a full blooded Vampire, and he was mean as hell. Though most vampires are. However, Ulysses’ temper even exceeded a pure vampire. He had a tongue as sharp as a rapier, and his cruelty knew no bounds. Unfortunately, for Albus, he was Snape’s *favorite* target. Luckily for Dumbledore, he had just missed schooling with Lucifer Angelus Malfoy by one year, for he was rumored to be 10x worse than Ulysses.
And one sadistic Slytherin had proved to be far more than the future Headmaster could handle.
The elder Snape tormented Albus his entire seven years. The boy taunted Albus about his family’s financial state, and about his family’s lack of education. Slytherin made sure everyone knew that none of the Dumbledore’s could read or write or count past what it would take to add up their fingers and toes. Ulysses teased him because his parents had servant jobs. Snape also spread rumors about Dumbledore’s father spending his nights in pubs and getting drunk on butterbeer, and his mom being a strumpet who prostituted herself to earn his tuition money. Then to top it off, Ulysses *never* let Albus forget about the incident concerning his eldest brother Alberforth. That infamous scandal involved his brother, a charmed, non-magical goat, and a lewd act of public bestiality.
Bestiality in itself was condoned, even accepted in the wizarding word, but there was a catch. The creature *had* to be magical.
It was embarrassing enough that his brother’s arrest was on the front page of the Daily Prophet, but it was torture when Snape brought it up.
All the time.
The Headmaster was ashamed to admit that his experiences with Severus’s great grandfather shaped the way he treats Slytherin now, and the way he made his decision on the way he handled the situation with Black and Lupin, so many years ago. But it was too late to change what he did to the Potions Master now.
However, when Severus schooled here with Lucius, the two boys were twin terrors. They reminded him so much of the Slytherins of his years, it was almost like time stood still. They tormented Sirius for his family’s financial state, Peter for being a muggleborn and James because Severus hated him. It seemed like the only one who escaped their viciousness was Remus. And that was only because he was of their ilk.
Nonetheless, in times like this when Albus reflected on past decisions, the old man accepts that not all of his choices were fair, and he knows that he was wrong. He accepts the fact that his beloved Marauders were equally horrible, and possibly even more so, seeing that McGonagall still considers them the absolute worst pranksters she has ever had. Even worse than the Weasley twins.
With tiny amusement, Albus surmised that they deserved to be punished many more times than they actually were.
But Albus didn’t regret the leniency he graced over those boys because those years were the best years of the Marauders life. Because after they left these hallowed halls their lives had went down hill, very quickly.
A few months after leaving Hogwarts, James married Lilly. The marriage made the front page of the Daily Prophet, but not in a good way. Believe it or not, James’s parents did *not* approve of his choice. They were dead set against it. Because not only was he was already betrothed to his cousin, Lilly was a *muggleborn.*
It was this bigotry that fueled James’s rebelliousness and made him date and marry Lilly, in the first place. In the young man’s mind, his parents and grandparents were too caught up in the pureblood hype. They were supposed to be Gryffindors! And Gryffindors weren’t supposed to be hypocrites. But that’s exactly what his parents and grandparents were. Hypocrites. They fought for muggle equality as long as it didn’t negatively affect their way of life.
Believe it or not, even the descendents of Gryffindor prided their heritage *and* their purity. The Gryffindors believed in muggle equality, but that belief didn‘t apply to marriage or blood mixing. Well, not as it related to *their* family anyway. They wanted to keep their bloodline pure to ensure that the next generation was more powerful than the last. For centuries they had been successful in keeping their line strong, even if it meant marrying within the family.
It wasn’t uncommon for purebloods to marry relatives, for the simple fact that it was a sure fire way to ensure purity in the bloodline.
Arranged marriages were also the norm. Which was the case between James and Lucius.
Well, not them persey but their heirs.
Musagets Gryffindor married his sister Erato. This was considered a good match. Erato was a gentle woman, but she was very powerful. It is said that the air around her was always thick with magical energy and that she never had to use a wand. Their marriage was also arranged, so to purify their Muse blood that they inherited from their mother. The two siblings had only one child, a daughter named Thalia. The husband they had prearranged to marry Thalia was killed by Grindelwald, so their daughter had married a man named Harry Cordilius Potter. He was pureblood, and the younger of two son’s. But he was the last of his clan because the rest of his family died, in the war with Grindelwald. Unfortunately, because of that war, he had lost his land and family fortune. Yet, even without high station, Harry still made a good match with Thalia because he had manticore blood flowing through his veins. Manticore’s are *very* powerful magical creatures. Scary as hell, but very powerful nonetheless. Harry and Thalia had a son named Jamestheous Potter, who they often called James. James was an extremely powerful child but unfortunately for the Gryffindor clan, he was also very rebellious.
On the other side of that prearranged marriage was the Malfoy legacy.
Lucifer Angelus Malfoy was a pureblood wizard, who was also half Shin demon, from his mother’s side. He was rumored to be as cruel as Satan himself, but rumors aside, it was a well known fact that he was an extremely brilliant, cunning, and ambitious young man. So ambitious, in fact, that he was able to merge to nations of rival demons.
Lucifer lived many years before he was able to charm and finagle his way into convincing a Veela woman, named Eve of the 1st House, to marry him. The 1st House was one of the lower Houses of the Veelan Royal Palace, but still part of the royal family. A year later, he had his first and only child named, Hades Malfoy of the 1st House. The child was extremely powerful, as it concerns demon magik. For those who took note to the child’s birth, it was an unexpected surprise, for it was always believed that the two different breeds of demons, Shin and Veela, were not compatible, as it related to capable heirs. However, Lucifer somehow knew different and because of his child’s magikal prowess, Hades was able to move up, in the ranks, and marry another full blooded Veela, named Lillith of the 3rd House. Unlike the rest of the Malfoy males, Hades has never left the Palace to live in wizarding world and still lives in the 3rd House to this day. However, Hades and Lillith had two children. A son named Lucius Dameon Malfoy of the 3rd House and a daughter named Venus of the 3rd House. Like her father, she has never left the Veelan Palace either
Like his father before him, Lucius was extremely powerful. Unlike his father, by the time the boy turned seven, Lucius was taken from his parents to live and be raised by his grandfather, Lucifer, in the Malfoy Manor. His grandfather wanted to make sure the Malfoy legacy lived on, in the wizarding world. He also wanted his grandson to learn to use all the different types of his power. Shin magik, Veelan magik, wizarding magic and, if it were possible, everything else that was miss-meshed in their blood.
After the birth of Venus, Lucius was betrothed to his sister, but by the time the young Lucius got his wizarding license, he was so powerful in both wizarding magic and demon magik, he was able to gain permission from Incubus and Succubus, themselves, to marry his cousin, their daughter, Narcissa. She was one of the many imperial princesses of the 7th House. The most respected and powerful House in the Veelan Palace. It wasn’t an easy task, but Lucius was his grandfather’s protégé. He was a Malfoy and Malfoy’s are never to be denied.
Politics and personal feelings aside, Musagets and Lucifer wanted to ensure that their powerful legacy continued. So the two men made a pact, when their grandson’s were still infants, that their families were going to unite. This union was to come in the form of a marriage between their grandsons’ children. Musagets Gryffindor was going to make certain that his grandson’s child was a daughter because the name Malfoy was more respected than the name Potter.
However, when James found this out, in his 7th year, he was furious. He was furious because not only did his grandda arrange his marriage with a distant cousin that he had never even met, he had also chosen the sex of the child he would be having *and* who she would be marrying as well! James didn’t want that. He wanted his own life. He wanted to be able to make his *own* choices.
By nature, James was rebellious child. It was the Gryffindor in him. He hated discipline, and he hated rules. But it wasn’t until he found out who his first child would be betrothed to, did he start doing everything he could to defy his parents and his grandparents and their old way of thinking.
His constant insubordination was a constant heartache for his mother Thalia. Albus remembered soothing her temper often and talking her out of withdrawing James from the school many a times.
The Headmaster left those memories and thought about the last year of James’s and Lilly’s life. They were truly happy, and that boded well with him. Because for a long time, Albus feared that the only reason James stayed with her, after they married, was to defy his parents and grandparents. Even if that wasn’t the case, the Headmaster knew for a fact that James had a son on purpose. Just to make sure that Lucius’s son would not marry him.
It was a shame that only James’s father forgave him for his disobedience. The rest of the Gryffindor clan never got the chance. For they were killed in one of the worst battles against Voldemort.
That reality always laid very heavy on the Headmaster’s heart. Mostly for the fact that he was the one who legally married James and Lilly after everyone else refused. It wasn’t that they disagreed with a pureblood and a muggleborn marrying. It was just that defying Musegets Gryffindor wasn’t something anyone wanted to do. Like most powerful purebloods, he wasn’t a very nice person when he didn‘t get his way. And Musagets Gryffindor was used to getting his way.
Severus never admitted it, but Albus knew that Lucius had led the raid in Godric’s Hollow. The planned murder wasn’t just to please his lord. It was because he wanted James’s son dead. Not because he knew that Harry was powerful enough to defeat the Dark Lord. No, Lucius wanted Harry dead because the raven-haired infant was bound to *his* infant son Draco, in a pact of marriage between the two powerful families. A pact that was carved in stone and soaked in blood. Betrothal packs like that were completely unbreakable and resilient against any type of spell or incantation. And it didn’t matter that the two betrothed were both male. It didn’t matter that Harry was half muggleborn. They were still magically destined to marry. However, there was one way to escape that fate, and that way was... death. The Potter boy had to die so Draco would be free.
However, before the attempt was plotted on Harry’s life, Lucifer had been killed by Voldemort. The elder Malfoy agreed with the ‘dark lords’ regime, but he refused to become a follower because 1) Voldemort couldn’t give him anything that he didn’t have already and 2)Lucifer refused to bow down to a mudblood.
Tom Riddle may have been the heir of Slytherin, but he was half muggle and in Malfoy’s opinion, the ‘dark lord’ was as much a mudblood as the ones he was sadistically killing.
The only reason Lucifer allowed Lucius, to join was because his grandson had a pacific motive for joining. Also the boy was trying to find a way release his son from that unfortunate bond now that Potter fucked things up. Unfortunately, neither Malfoy knew that when Lucius took the mark, it sealed both of their fate.
Dumbledore left that memory and focused on another. He decided to think about the long, forgotten, marriage pact which bonded the two, unknowing rivals.
Just by observing the two boys, during their first year, Albus thought that maybe the pact had been broken or absolved. Together, Harry and Draco were like oil and water. They just didn’t mix. Moreover, they hated each other with an unbridled passion.
So it appeared to all who knew them.
However, it wasn’t until their 2nd year, and after Lucius had enacted one of his many failed plans to help Voldemort kill Harry, did Dumbledore realize that the pact was as strong as ever, despite the boy’s behavior toward each other. A big clue was when Dobby tried to warn the Harry about danger. At the time, Dobby was Draco’s house elf.
Harry had confessed this to the Headmaster because he thought it was odd that a Malfoy house elf would defy its masters, to warn him of danger.
The Headmaster didn’t tell Harry why Dobby came to caution him; instead, he just pretended that he thought it was odd as well. Nonetheless Albus knew the true reason; it was the bond Draco had with him. The young Malfoy could, and would, torment Harry without remorse, but if it was something that would fatally harm his rival, he would always try to protect him.
Why?
Because he couldn’t help himself . His instincts were. and still are, to protect his mate.
Dumbledore was certain that not even Draco knew why he had sent his elf to warn Potter; just as he still doesn’t understand his reasoning to why he still protects the Gryffindor heir. Just as Harry didn’t know why he felt the need to make sure Draco was out of harms way and alright ,even though he knew that his friends were still being attacked in the Great Hall. Draco was his first priority.
The aged wizard thought about other things that happened today. Like when he watched Draco handle Harry’s wand with the up-most of ease. It was proof that their bond was getting stronger. The Gryffindor heir had a special wand, not only because it is the brother to You-Know-Who’s, but because it was spelled to be the mate of Draco’s true wand. Not the wand that he broke today. The one he will receive, once he...
Knock knock knock
“Enter.” Albus called out as he left his thoughts.
In came three extremely exhausted Professors.
“If I ever discover which little idiot started this row...*I’m* going to hex him!” McGonagall groaned out tiredly. “Or her!” She added on as an after thought.
“Just be glad that you aren’t Poppy.” Remus offered. “She still has to deal with all of those injured children.”
“Oh she’s going to have help, I assure you.” The Gryffindor Head of House assured a bit gleefully.
Sibyll swept past the two Gyffindors and took the seat closest to the Headmaster. It was Minerva’s usual seat. She knew this and that’s why she did it. “He has revealed himself!” She whispered dramatically to Albus.
“Who?” Lupin asked curiously as he took a seat next to the Divination teacher. He did this purposely, to separate the two women because McGonagall was a bit peeved that her seat was taken.
“The Child of the Equinox!” Sibyll answered brightly. “He has revealed himself!”
“We heard you the first time.” Minerva mumbled snidely, under her breath.
“But....I thought...that was just a folklore.” The brown haired man stuttered. “I mean to think that a wizard has the power to write any spell he wants...without fear of death...It’s preposterous!”
“I am afraid not.” Albus sighed. “It is very true.”
“Then this is a good thing, right?” Remus asked hopefully, as he straighten up in his seat. “That means we can get him to help us.... He will be a powerful ally, right?”
Dumbledore gave a solemn shake of his head.
Lupin looked at the older wizard and was distressed by his answer. “What do you mean no?”
“Who is it?” Minerva finally asked. After a day like today, she couldn’t take the suspense.
Trelawney looked knowingly toward the Headmaster and waited for him to reveal the grave secret. However, her real reason for allowing him to spill the beans was because she had no clue who it was.
The older man looked at his close friends, then turned his gaze out the window.
“I am fortunes fool....” He whispered dejectedly. “I thought I was so clever....Always a step ahead....I’ve tried to do what was right...What I *thought* was right...I shouldn‘t have been so blatant in my favoritism....I shouldn‘t have been so cocky...So sure that we had the upper hand.....I should have been fair...because now ....I‘ve only made things worse.”
“Of course you were fair!” Remus assured, even though he had no clue what the Headmaster was talking about. “You’ve always been fair! You can ask anybody!” He nodded toward the two women for conformation and got it, in a silent nod of agreement.
The old man shook his head slowly and woefully. “I’ve made bad decisions....Now it’s going to be the death.... of all of us.”
“What are you going on about?” Minerva asked, impatiently as she tried to conceal her fear. In all the years she has known Albus, she had never heard him sound so defeated, so broken. “Is this about the Child of the Equinox? Will you please just tell us who it is! And then later, we will decide on how to remedy your so called bad decisions.”
It took a minute before Dumbledore returned his gaze toward them. His eyes looked haunted, and he looked as if he had aged 20 years. He looked... as if he had given up all hope.
“It’s Draco Malfoy.” He admitted in a melancholy whisper. “The Child of the Equinox is Draco Malfoy.”
The three professors gasped in horror.

You’re probably thinking that there is no way that the Gryffindor heirs would be bigots and you more likely than not right :)
I just made them like that because I was thinking...hey if the people who are sorted into Gryffindor have the characteristics of being a *true* Gryffindor then...hmmm maybe the true Gryffinfors weren’t so great. I mean... James was a pureblood right? But the Gryffindors are pro muggle? So that means the books tell us that out of *at least* 1000 years no Gryffindor ever fell in love with a muggleborn!!!...Is that even possible? In my humble opinion, and its just my opinion, not valid truth or anything...I was thinking that maybe they were just not allowed to marry them. Being a pureblood aristocrat seems to carry a lot of weight in the wizarding world. Even the Weasleys pride their purity to an extent. And we all know that Gryffindors can be prejudice.
Another thing...why hasn’t anyone shared Harry’s family tree with him? He had to find out that he was the Gryffindor heir by pulling a sword out of a hat! You know Dumbledore knew before hands. And as long as Dumbledore has been apart of Hogwarts, you know he had to have known at least three generations of Gryffindors before Harry. So why hadn’t he shared what he knows with Harry? Why does everyone only concentrate on his parents? What about the rest of that famous family tree?!
Oh.. I’m sorry. I guess I kinda got carried away with the “why‘s?” (sheepish grin)
As for Dumbledore...I kinda wanted to give him a reason to why he is so blatantly *horrible* to Slytherins. However that stuff about his family.... well, he set that up himself by his own confessions.
Ok sorry again...

:hugs:
