Miles away and underground in a secret gathering place, Severus was trying very hard not to panic. He stood in the circle of Death Eaters, obsidian orbs sparkling out worriedly from his mask. In the middle of the circle, Lialani lay bound and gagged. She squirmed, terrified, and tried to cry out through the gag in her mouth. Her eyes searched the dark, menacing group around her and when they settled on Severus, she squirmed even more helplessly.
“Calm down, little one,” Lord Voldemort boomed out, startling her into stillness. “Attention, all my supporters. I’ve been telling you about this girl. She is a Magnesius.”
Mutters and whispers broke out.
“Quiet! Now, Severus has had some experience when it comes to handling the little one and her powers. Apparently, fear and anger sets them off. Luckily, Severus informed me of this and I knew enough to have a potion-draining potion made. When the young Malfoy brought her here, she was forced to drink that potion. However, since I need her powers, the potion only works for a set amount of time.”
Applause erupted from all around the room. Voldemort held up one long, scaly finger and immediately it was all shushed.
“There was a twist, though. It seems that she is a mother. And our very own Severus is the father. They will be getting married over the summer. This is good. It will put her at our reach at all times. But, Severus was a naughty boy and now he must be punished.” Voldemort pointed his wand at Severus. “Crucio!”
Severus fought to keep his mouth shut as pain licked through his body, seeming to light his nerves on fire. He sank to the floor, jerking as the pain continued to course through his limbs. Lialani began to struggle again as she watched this happen to Severus. Her eyes were big and frightened. She heard laughter as Death Eaters pointed at her. Voldemort lifted the curse and Severus climbed shakingly to his feet. He took his rightful place in the circle. Lialani ceased her fight against her bonds when she saw that he was still alive. Aching and still experiencing dull pain, maybe, but still alive.
“My, my, it seems that the little one doesn’t like it when I do that to Severus,” Voldemort mocked in a singsong voice. Lialani shuddered. “I wonder if she would like it if I did it to her.”
He started to raise his wand but a cry stopped him.
“No!” Severus shouted.
Voldemort looked at him, shock and anger showing on his face.
“I mean, my Lord, I don’t know if the strength of the curse would overcome the potion. If it does, then her powers will most definitely take action and you do not want that, my Lord,” Severus said, an ugly taste lingering in his mouth as he called this vile man “my Lord”.
“Very good, Severus. Thank you for catching that,” Voldemort responded, but there was a mean glint in his eyes that showed that he was still angry.
Gratitude and relief showed clearly on Lialani’s face. It was quickly replaced with worry as she heard a loud wail.
“Well, it seems that the baby has woken up,” Voldemort said.
Lialani quivered with anger as she watched him reach into a crib and lift out her daughter, cradling her to him delicately.
“Perhaps the baby is hungry. Severus, bring the little one down to her cell. Lucius, follow with the baby.” Voldemort handed Aglaia to him.
Lialani and Severus did not like this plan. Distaste mixed with fury showed on her face as Severus picked her up and began to make his way deeper underground.
“Lucius, walk in front of me. I can’t see and I have the Dark Lord’s most prized possession in my arms so I can’t perform Lumos,” Severus said, and stopped dead in his tracks to force Lucius in front of him.
“You mean you have your most prized possession in your arms,” Lucius sniped. “Look at the way you carry her. You carry her not as if she were simply some half-blood that you’re being forced to marry but as if she is someone you actually care about.”
“Lucius, stop being stupid,” Severus snapped.
“Then why did it happen in the first place?” Lucius trapped him.
“I d kno know what I was thinking but I know it wasn’t that I cared about her,” Severus said vehemently, wishing dearly that Lialani wasn’t here to hear this.
He looked down at her, almost as if he was punishing himself for saying those things, but was surprised to see that she was sleeping.
“But if you don’t care about her why would you let it happen?” Lucius persisted.
“Because I wasn’t thinking and I followed my cock instead of my brains. Is that good enough for you?” Severus asked heatedly.
Lucius was taken aback at the bluntness of Severus’ words. “Well, at least you cleared it all up for me,” he said snarkily.
“Good. Now, would you please do Lumos so we can move?” Severus was getting irritated.
The tip of Lucius’ wand flared into a light and they started to move along the corridor. When they reached the bottom, they were faced with a cold-looking cell.
“Miss Turowsky, wake up,” Severus shook Lialani gently until her eyelids fluttered open.
“Of course, Severus, of course you don’t care about her,” Lucius said sarcastically as he unlocked the cell door.
“Lucius, shut up!” Severus snarled and pushed open the door with his foot.
He stepped in and laid Lialani down on the cot. He removed the gag from her mouth and with a wave of his wand her binds vanished.
“Thank you, Professor,” she said, rubbing her wrists and ankles where the cords bit into them.
“You’re welcome, Miss Turowsky. Lucius, give her the baby so she can feed her,” Severus commanded.
Lucius handed Lialani the baby. She immediately cradled the baby to her and looked up at them expectantly.
“Lucius, leave,” Severus ordered and pointed to the door.
“You’re coming with me,” Lucius stated.
“I’ll come after you in a few minutes,” Severus responded menacingly. “Now go.”
Lucius nodded and left. Severus stood at the door and made sure that he went all the way up. When Lucius disappeared from sight as he reached the top, Severus turned and slammed the door shut.
“Professor, why are you staying?” Lialani asked.
“Did you drink the potion?” Severus ignored her question.
“Yes, they forced me to,” Lialani replied.
“Then drink this.” Severus produced a potion from inside his robes and handed it to her.
“Okay.” Again, Severus was surprised at the trust she displayed. She swallowed it and handed it back to him.
“How did you manage to get that in here?” she asked.
“Voldemort’s trust in me may be waning, but I can still get into meetings without being searched,” Severus answered. “By the way, since you failed to ask, that potion you just took gave you back all your powers.”
“I assumed that,” Lialani responded. She concentrated for a minute and Severus was surprised to find himself lifted into the air.
“Very nice, Miss Turowsky, but I would appreciate it if you would put me down,” Severus said and was grateful to find both feet firmly on the ground. “Thank you.”
Lialani nodded. “Why did you give me the potion? I mean, is there a specific reason why?”
“I have a plan. I’m going to turn you and the baby invisible. I want you to float to the surface. We’re underground,” he added when he saw her confused look at the word ‘surface’. “The potion also gave you strength so you should be able to do it. When you get there, there will be a broken doll lying on the ground. It’s a port key. Grab it and you will be transported to the Hogwarts gates. Get up to the castle and go immediately to the Headmaster.”
“Sounds good. Won’t Voldemort be suspicious that you stayed down here so long?” she asked, worried about him.
“I’ll tell him that I waited and tied you back up,” Severus replied, touched by her concern.
“Okay. Can I use your cloak? It will be easier,” Lialani said.
“Of course.” Severus grabbed her hands, pulled her up, and swung the cloak around her. He placed a hand on her cheek and whispered, “Please be careful.”
He cast the charm and she vanished. Along with her went the look of complete shock. He swept out of the cell and up the corridor.
