Chapter Eleven – The Elves

A delightful month of alone time came and went, but one day Lucius announced he had to return to his duties at the Ministry of Magic and he needed to take control of his investments again. Lucius occasionally had her sign documents for him, releasing additional funds for her family’s welfare but mostly Olivia was left at a loose end. She knew Lucius didn’t like her to leave the estate without him, so she decided to explore the estate itself. Until then she’d not seen much of her new home except the morning room (breakfast and teatime), the drawing room (drinks before dinner), the dining room (lunch and dinner) and their bedroom (sex, sex, more sex, and a bit of sleep).

Olivia asked Minnie to show her around. “How many rooms does this mansion have?”

“One hundred and two,” squeaked Minnie.

“Oh, dear. Shall we just start with this floor?” she said to the house elf. Minnie nodded and began guiding Olivia through the rooms of the manor, showing her all manner of beautiful art works and furnishings. They wandered through a great many sitting rooms, a billiard room, a vast library, some small parlors, one of which she decided to use for her own, and other special function rooms before Olivia said wearily, “Let’s go to your floor, Minnie.” Instantly they were standing in the basement and Olivia was seeing an entirely new area.

She was entranced seeing all the house elves at work doing various tasks. “So this is where you all are. She wandered around the area, greeting each elf and asking his or her name. How many of you are there in all?” Olivia asked Minnie.

Minnie looked scared, “Master might not want you to know.”

“Oh, is it a secret, then?” Olivia was intrigued. Why would it matter if she knew? “I don’t want you to get into trouble with your employer.” Minnie goggled at that.

Olivia asked to be taken back to the drawing room because her presence seemed to be somehow disturbing the elves. When Minnie had set them in the drawing room again Olivia dared another question. “Why do you call him Master?”

“Because he is our Master. We are bound to him.”

“You work for him, but you get a salary, don’t you?” Olivia was starting to get a sinking feeling about the elves. She didn’t think their binding had anything to do with an empathic connection.

Minnie just shook her head, no.

“What does ‘bound’ mean exactly, then?” probed Olivia.

But Minnie was now shaking with fear so Olivia said, “Never mind, Minnie. I didn’t mean to pry. And I won’t tell Master I saw all your co-workers either. Okay?”

Minnie nodded miserably and popped out of the room.

Another whole month went by before Olivia found an opportunity to ask about the elves. Lucius had been working late and was uncommunicative at meals. She was also feeling elements of increased fear and anger from him so she had waited. At dinner that evening Lucius sent an elf to reheat a dish that had cooled while they talked. Olivia took the opportunity to ask Lucius, “How many elves do you employ?”

“I don’t employ any,” replied Lucius.

“What?” cried Olivia. “I see them every day.”

“They are not employed. They are bound to me.”

“Please explain ‘bound’ then.” Olivia requested.

“I own them. They are bound to my ownership.” Lucius saw storm clouds gathering at his dining table. “This is not your concern, Olivia. I don’t wish to discuss it further.”

“They are slaves? You don’t pay them? They can’t leave if they want?” Olivia was incensed. She had made use of their services not understanding they had no choice and weren’t getting any pay. “I don’t want elves who are slaves, Lucius. Can’t we come to some agreement with them and pay them for their work here? And at least give them some new clothes.”

“They are servants, not slaves. The elves won’t work for me if they aren’t bound to service. And I absolutely forbid you to give them so much as a piece of ribbon, do you understand? No pieces of clothing whatsoever. Any given clothing dissolves their servitude. Don’t pass judgment on what you do not understand.”

“But there is no loyalty, no thinking for themselves. It’s immoral and very dangerous, like sitting on a tinderbox. Fear is a scary stick to hold over the ones inside your own home. It could turn on you. You give them no control, I imagine.”

Lucius said, “No, they do not need to control anything. I will not discuss it further. You have already gone too far. Leave it!” he commanded fiercely.

Olivia was now as angry as Lucius. Feeling his anger and her own, she said, “I don’t want slave elves in our home. I want only paid employees who have freedom. This is like the Dark Ages, Lucius.”

“Then perhaps I’ll behave like the Dark Ages and put you in the tower,” Lucius said in a dark tone she’d never heard before. Before she could blink she was in her original bedroom and Lucius had slammed her door shut with the words “Fermum Totalis”. He disapparated out of the manor.
