Preparations

Chapter 11

Chapter 11. Preparations

Sasha hurried down the corridor, away from the potions dungeon. The last phase one sessiad gad gone well. All potions were decanted, strained, and sealed in vials. They had agreed to meet Monday at noon, to start the preparations for the final phase. Now, she wondered if she had time to get back to the dormitory before Cho, Adrian and the others had left.

She made the decision to attend the dance just this morning. She had no excuses, as her exams were over, and the potions were finished without mishap. And she had to admit, she felt like celebrating. Plus, she actually had something to wear. Sasha you twit, when did you start worrying about your clothes, she asked herself. Probably the first time I really started to notice my Potions Master, she answered herself.

She grimaced at the memory of the last time she attended a Hogwarts’ dance. It was the Tri-Wizards Ball. Sasha remembered with humiliation dressing up for it in her school uniform and every day robes, because she did not have anything else to wear. It was not like she was in the habit of going out on the town or anything. Besides Muggles clothes and her school uniform, she did not own anything even remotely formal. Until this summer.

When she was shopping for school supplies in Diagon Alley, she stopped by Witch Hazel’s Tailoring. While not the most exclusive shop in the Alley, it was very respectable. Hazel spent some time with her, and together they decided on a midnight blue velvet dress trimmed in silver, and a matching silver-gray dress robe.

The dress had a low, square-cut bodice that was very fitted along the chest and tapered at the waist. The skirt portion flowed naturally from her hips with a slight flair, which gave the dress movement when she walked without getting her feet caught up in it. It was trimmed with silver thread, which complimented the deep blue material beautifully. The sleeves were loosely fitted, flaring slightly at the wrists. On the end of both sleeves, at the back of her hand a ring was sewn into the material, which she fitted over her middle finger and kept the fluted sleeves from falling down when she raised them.

She just reached the Ravenclaw common room painting when it burst open, and a gaggle of first, second and third years flooded out. There were all excited, chatting nervously on their way to the dance. Yikes! She knew she would be late as she still had to shower and change. She just hoped Cho and the others had not left yet. She ran up the spiral staircase to her dorm room and found to her relief they were still there.

"Sasha! We thought you wouldn’t make it," Cho said. "Hurry up, go shower and come back!"

Sasha did not have time to stop, so she threw her bag down, grabbed her bathrobe and kept walking towards the bathroom in one fluid motion. She stepped into the shower, washed her hair twice, and wrapped a towel around it. Wearing just her bathrobe and the towel on her head, she hurried back to her room.

The rest of the girls were just finishing their hair and were chatting away, teasing Cho about Harry when wal walked in. Adrian waved Sasha over onto a stool. She sat down and looked up at the other girl. Adrian took off the towel and started combing out her hair.

"Ugh, Sasha, you have so many tangles! When was the last time you had it cut?" she asked a look of exasperation on her face.

"Umm, well, not too sure about that," she replied sheepishly. She did not want to admit she cut it herself when it got too long.

"I have an idea for tonight," Adrian said shyly with a grin. "We can trim off the split ends, then curl it for body, and put it up at the sides, back and front. Around your face we can pull out tendrils to hang over down and hide your..." She stopped, a look of trepidation on her face.

Sasha smiled understandingly, and finished the sentence. "My scar. That sounds fine," she said softly. However, inside she was uneasy. What if it just made things worse, or showed off the scar more than hid it, she thought. If nothing else, she can wait until the rest of them leave, and just not go down.

Adrian appeared relieved, and taking out a small pair of very sharp shears, went to work. She trimmed off the uneven ends, and took out some of the excess bulk from the sides. She borrowed Sasha’s wand, and wound sections of hair around the wide base. Muttering a drying spell, she pointed her own wand at the wound hair and it dried quickly, curling tightly to the wand. She repeated this all over Sasha’s head. Then, taking sections of curls, she twisted and pinned them tightly into place. Taking the narrow end of her wand she pulled very thin strands of hair from the front and sides, which she made sure would cover the worst of Sashas scar.

Adrian looked down and assessed her handiwork. There was something missing, she thought. She held up her cosmetics bag questioningly at Sasha. Sasha had never been one for makeup, and never owning any, had no idea how to apply it. She shook her head slightly.

"I have no clue where to even start with that," she admitted. Adrian winked at her, picked up a sponge and damping it slightly with foundation, began to apply it lightly over her skin. She took her time and was very cautious, not wanting to hurt Sasha, but making an effort to tone down the damaged tissues along her face. She added a hint of very natural eye shadow, and just a touch of eyeliner. Nothing too gaudy, but something to enhance her natural features.

Meanwhile, Cho and the others had finished dressing and were watching the progress on Sasha with astonishment. Adrian stepped back, and smiled at her success.

"You look just beautiful, Sasha," Cho said with honest appreciation. Sasha walked over to the mirror and was shocked at her reflection. Adrian had done wonders with her hair. Sasha noticed her scar was still very visible beneath the thin wisps of hair. There was no way makeup could hide that, she thought to herself. Still, for the first time in her life, thought she looked attractive. It was more than that. She had never felt so elegant before in her life.

Sasha turned to face them, speechless. "Thank you so much! I would never had believed I could look this good, and it is all thanks to you," she choked out. The look of amazement made the other girls laugh. "It’s not a big deal. A good trim and a few curls - no problem!" Adrian replied, a wide smile on her lips.

Cho spoke again. "It’s nine thirty, and we had better hurry or the dance will be over before we get there," she reminded them.

The girls scampered towards the door. "Coming?" she asked Sasha.

"I will be right behind you. I still have to get dressed, but I will meet you in the hall," she promised.

As Cho, Adrian and the others left, Sasha went over to her small closet and reached behind her uniforms for her dress and good robe. She slipped off the bathrobe, and stepped into the dress, fitting the rings over her middle fingers. Her single pair of dress shoes would have to do, she thought, but they would be hidden by the long dress anyway. She smoothed out the material, took one last look in the mirror. Sliding on the dress robe, she took a deep breath, and calmly walked out of the dorm room, and down to the hall to join the others.
