Chapter 11: A Truce

***********************~*~***********************

“Can’t the two of you give me a chance?” Draco said quietly. He was getting so tired of having to prove himself over and over again.

Harry was looking at Draco with a mixture of enlightenment and grudging respect. Ron, never one to let go of a grudge on the other hand, still looked as if he had a strangle hold on his anger and resentment.

Harry turned to Ginny and his expression softened. “Gin, if I promise that we won’t kill Malfoy will you let us talk alone.”

Ginny looked each man in the eyes and nodded. “I’ll see the three of you at dinner. If I see so much as a scratch on any of you I’ll hex the lot of you. Understand?” After a parting glare three pairs of eyes watched her stalk away.

“She still has quite a temper doesn’t she?” Harry said, a ghost of amusement teasing his voice.

“Yeah, you should have seen the Howler she sent to the twins. The two of you got off easy for now.” Draco said with a short chuckle, and then grew serious. “We should take som somewhere else, any preference?”

At the negative response from both Draco led them a short way down the hall to an empty classroom. He had decided that keeping this on neutral territory was the best idea.

Thinking only of his own comfort, as was his habit, he transfigured one of the desks into an armchair, then as an after thought transfigured two more. “No reason to be uncomfortable.” He said by way of explanation before draping himself over one of the chairs.

Harry made himself comfortable while Ron predictably didn’t take the chair; still seething in his anger he paced behind the chair like a caged animal.

“I know Ron should be asking you this but I doubt he could say a civil word right now. What are your intentions with Ginny?” Harry began.

“I love her, Potter. I love her more than I have ever loved any one.” Draco said looking at the temperamental red head daring him to explode with his next declaration. “I am going to ask her to be my wife.”

As if on cue Ron burst in an explosion of anger. “You are going to what?!”

“I am going to marry your sister, if she’ll have me.” Draco said slowly making sure Ron heard every word.

Harry, anticipating the upward stroke of Ron’s wand, quickly raised his own. “Stupefy!” He called, stunning his friend of nearly twenty years. Ron’s body went limp and he toppled back into the chair behind him. Draco’s eyes opened in shock, he never thought that Harry Potter had the stones to stun someone he considered a friend.

“Malfoy, you always did have a flair for the dramatic.” Harry said shaking his head, then suddenly asking, “How long?”

“Since the beginning of the school year.” Draco said quickly.

“No, Malfoy, how long have you loved her?” Harry said though he thought he already knew the answer.

“Our seventh year.” Draco said quietly. “Just before the war.”

Harry nodded. “I can’t guarantee that Ron won’t hex you when I wake him up or that he will ever accept you. Go talk to Ginny’s parents. They are the most reasonable people I know.”

“Thanks Potter.” Draco said and offered his hand to his one time nemesis. Harry smiled and shook the Slytherin’s hand. Draco waited a beat then asked, “So Potter, Why haven’t you gotten yourself tied down yet?”

“Being head of the MLEA takes up a lot of my time and it wouldn’t be fair to my wife or girlfriend if we got involved.” Harry gave what sounded like a patented response.

“Sure Potter, and my father received the Dementor’s Kiss for hugging cute fluffy bunnies. Come on what’s the real reason?” Draco said not buying a word of Harry’s explanation.

Harry turned a little red and turned away. “Malfoy you have enough problems. You don’t need to go mucking about in my love live.”

“All right Potter, no need to get angry.” Draco said putting his hands up in surrender. “Potter…” Draco paused dropping his hands back to his sides suddenly in a rare moment of insecurity.

The dark haired hero of the wizarding world turned back to him with an eyebrow raised in silent question as he waited for Draco to continue.

“My father and Ginny’s dad…” Draco began. “Potter you know that they never got along. Lucius did everything he could to bait Mr. Weasley in anyway he could. Would Mr. Weasley even listen to me?”

“Mr. Weasley is the most fair man I know, Malfoy. Besides you’ll never know unless you talk to him.” Harry told him.

Draco nodded then smiled. “Give me five minutes before you wake him up.”

When Harry nodded Draco smiled and hurried out the door. Draco turned back and stuck his head quickly back in to the room, “Thanks Potter.”

Draco stood out side the Burrow. Ginny had told him that was what her home was called and he hadn’t expected the sight that met his eyes. It was the oddest house he had ever seen. A hodpodge of rooms that looked like an unsteady pil chi children’s building blocks. Draco swallowed his urge to sneer in distaste at the building and just shook his head. Someday he would get the Weasleys to agree to let him help them the next time they remodeled. Draco walked up to the front door and knocked smartly on the worn painted surface.

A moment later the door was opened and the smiling face of Ginny’s mum greeted him until she saw just who was on her doorstep. He felt horrible when he saw the welcoming smile disappear from her round face and cool harness slide into her eyes.

“Now then what would the Malfoy heir be wanting here then?” Her voice was cold and cutting as any he had heard in the ‘polite’ society of the other pureblooded drawing rooms.

“Mrs. Weasley, I was wondering if I may have a word with Mr. Weasley. I won’t take much of his time.” Draco found himself looking at the door again as it swung shut in his face.

A/N: Ok One More Chapter to go and this story will be done. I promise that it will only be a couple of weeks. I am so sorry about the lag in this chapter’s coming I just couldn’t get the conversation between Draco, Harry and Ron to flow right. It took putting it away for a while and then going back to it.

I am planning on starting a sequel to this story focusing on Harry and why he is still alone after all these years. Don’t expect to see it for a couple of months though. I have 3 other multi-chapter stories going at the moment and I would like to see at least 2 of them finished before I start posting a new one.
