cap 10

The black clad professor picked at his sleeve rolling it down and back up again. The skull seemed to look at him in the face. He winced in pain as the mark seemed to pulse. He shook the pain off as he realized the patient had come to. He watched her eyes start to tear as she stared up at the light. It had been three days since his old student had brought her to Hogwarts.

“Hermione,” he nodded at her as he stood at her bedside.

“Professor Snape,” she acknowledged him.

“How are you feeling?”

“I wish I were dead, Sir,” she said turning away from him.

Professor Snape walked to the other side of the bed. “You’re very lucky to have survived my dear.”

“Why would you care, Sir?”

Professor Snape smiled to himself, “Contrary to what you believe, I’ve always considered you one of the best potions students that I have ever been able to mentor.”

She looked up at him, “I’ve always thought you hated me.”

“You took potions with Slytherin. I had to play my favorites,” he smiled a little.

“I’m nothing more than a Mudblood, Sir,” she said as another tear rolled down her cheek.

“Don’t say that, Hermione,” Professor Snape said cautiously brushing away the tear.

“That’s what this whole war is all about. I’ve lost everyone because of it, Sir.”

“That’s not true. We’re here, Hermione; Harry, all of us in the Order, the Weasleys.”

Hermione closed her eyes. Professor Snape knew he hit a nerve and couldn’t take it back.

“I loved him so much, Professor.”

“I know, Hermione. Ronald was the worst potions maker I’ve ever seen. But even in school I knew he was very much in love with you.”

She looked up at the black haired middle-aged wizard. He looked uncomfortable.

He looked down at his exposed forearm. The mark burned as if on fire. He rubbed it unconsciously. He looked back into her face, “I know what it’s like to lose somebody in the war, Hermione.”

She looked up at him. He seemed sad. “Did you love her, Sir?” She had an inkling that she had hit a nerve herself.

He paused. He swallowed as if he were holding back. “Yes, very much. She was a muggle-born, too. Hmmm. She saved my life fighting for her cause. I watched them torture and kill her. I had considered them my brethren; I believed what they believed.

“She could have given me up, but she didn’t,” he said, putting his hand to his face quickly wiping away what seemed to her as a tear.

“She shook her head at me, just barely, so that no one else could even notice. I couldn’t do a thing to stop it,” he said closing his eyes. He seemed more human to her now.

She watched him rub his forearm. She recognized the same mark that Draco had on his own forearm. “Does that hurt, Professor?”

“All the time now, since the new war has broken. He would have wanted you to stay alive, Hermione,” he said uncharacteristically taking the young woman’s hand in his. He squeezed it reassuringly almost like how her father used to. She nodded as she closed her eyes.

Professor Snape nodded at Madame Pomfrey to enter. She quickly examined the young woman and was satisfied with the results.

It had taken another couple of days before Hermione felt strong enough to get out of her cot. She looked through the curtains, making sure she wasn’t visible.

“I’m glad to see you feeling better, Hermione,” she heard a familiar older wizard’s voice.

“Good morning, Professor Dumbledore,” she said not taking her eyes off the grounds.

“I sense you have something you wish to tell me,” he said sitting on a stool next to her.

She smiled to herself. She remembered he had auror skills, among other things. “I guess there’s no need for me to say anything more then.”

“We’ll miss you, you know.”

“I’ll miss you all too,” she said as she hugged the old man.

“Where will you go?” he asked still holding the young woman in his arms.

“Away,” she said into his shoulder.

“Running away doesn’t solve anything,” he said as he gently pushed her at arms length.

“I just,” she gulped, “I just need some time to think, Professor.”

The old wizard looked at his former pupil. “Nobody knows a thing about you. Harry, Draco, nobody. You could stay here forever.”

“It wouldn’t be safe, Professor . . . for the children and everything,” she said.

Professor Dumbledore studied the young witch curiously for a moment. “Perhaps you’re right. What is it that you muggles say? God speed, Hermione.”

Hermione only nodded. She didn’t know where she would go but she left. Her first stop was Gringotts. She cleaned out her vault, changing everything she had had into Euros. She walked around Diagon Alley picking up a couple of knick-knacks for just in case.

She then found herself at London Heathrow Airport, in front of one of the gigantic departure boards. Flight eighteen departing at gate twenty nine, leaving at 9:09 and arriving at 5:15 local time. She would run with the bulls. She had seen a bull fight with Ron when they were on holiday in Spain. Seville was her new home now.
