The Taste of Revenge – Chapter 10

Lucius didn\'t know how to approach Severus after what had been said. He didn\'t understand either what could have happened that would have brought on such a remarkable change in Severus. One day they had been happy together and then, just a few days later, like a flash of lightning from a clear blue sky, Severus told him it was over, that he didn\'t want him, had no use for what they had.

They still saw each other occasionally, even though Severus tried to keep his distance. There were the meetings with the other followers of the Dark Lord, and the odd official gathering and cocktail party. But Severus seemed to avoid those as much as possible nowadays, and Lucius was certain it was because he would be there. It was him that Severus was avoiding.

The wedding came and went, and to Lucius it was nothing but a duty. There was no joy, no relief to be found in the business of making this marriage as real as possible. The consummation of it was a small nightmare, and after having bent the bride over and taken her hard and rough from behind, Lucius spent the rest of the night drinking wine and reading, and fell asleep in the armchair in front of the fireplace. He would not share a bed with Narcissa, and separate bedrooms were arranged for.

One afternoon after he had been called before the Dark Lord and had been questioned about tactics and possible plans to proceed with the imminent take-over and the disposal of some kind of threat, Lucius walked past the laboratory in the basement, as had become a habit ever since Severus joined their cause. It was one that he had kept even after their break-up. This time the lab was not empty, and Severus was working.

Lucius stopped and stood in the door for a few moments, watching the man that used to be his lover no more than a few months ago. The movements were so familiar, the way Severus\' hair fell into his face as he leaned forward to make notes, the way his hands elegantly moved over the various bottles and equipment. These were the hands that had brought Lucius so much pleasure and had touched him with such tenderness...

\"What do you want?\" Severus\' dark voice cut through Lucius\' musings over the past.

\"We need to talk.\"

\"I have nothing to say to you.\" Severus continued to work, clearly trying to make Lucius feel that he wasn\'t welcome.

\"Perhaps not, but I have things to say to you.\" Lucius sounded tired. Now that he was standing in close proximity to Severus again, he felt that coldness between them much clearer. It was a coldness that was so absolute that he knew that the best he could hope for was an explanation, a reason for Severus\' leaving him. Any chance of picking up the pieces seemed remote.

\"Say what you have to say then and leave me to my work.\" There was a definite note of annoyance in Severus\' voice, but Lucius couldn\'t help wondering if it was a defence rather than what the man truly felt. There had to be a reason why Severus avoided him; if he didn\'t love him anymore there was no need to keep him at a distance, was there?

\"Why?\"

Severus looked up at Lucius and put down the bottle he had been holding. \"Why what?\"

\"Why did you break it off? What happened?\"

There was a sigh in response. Then a pause as Severus put both hands, palms down, on the work table and looked down at it, his head almost hanging between his arms. He looked up at Lucius, studying him for a few seconds.

\"Have you been fucking Sirius Black?\" Severus would rather have this over with quickly, there was no reason to drag it out.

\"Yes... but that was years ago.\" Lucius was slightly surprised at the question, and was left searching again, trying to find a way inside Severus\' strong mental shields. Severus felt the pressure, and reinforced them even more, making it almost impossible for himself to read Lucius in turn, had he wanted to do so.

\"I see.\" Severus wanted to sneer, wanted to rant and rave and yell at Lucius. Instead he kept that cold control, not showing anything to the last person he had trusted with his emotions. Sirius Black hadn\'t been lying. Lucius Malfoy had never truly been Severus\' lover... it had just been temporary. The few times that words of love had been spoken the real lie.

\"Is that was this is about? That I had other lovers before you?\"

\"I don\'t care about that, but Black... You knew that he made my life a living hell, and that he also tried to kill me. Still you never felt it important enough to tell me the reason why he hated me,\" Severus said angrily.

\"So, who told you about him?\" Lucius crossed his arms and leaned against the wall. He knew there was nothing to be gained from trying to get close to Severus again, not yet anyway. Jealousy, that was what lay behind it. Perhaps they could repair it, perhaps they couldn\'t. It all depended on how deep it ran, and if Severus was willing.

\"Oh, I had a little visit from the man himself. He was kind enough to tell me about your little arrangement with him as well.\" There was a look of contempt on Severus\' face.

\"Arrangement?\" Lucius arched an eyebrow. \"What arrangement would that be?\" Sirius Black had visited Severus? He had told him that Lucius had used to fuck him before he let Severus fully into his life... That conniving little bastard of a pureblood bitch!

\"That you\'ll go back to fucking him now that you\'re married.\" Severus looked down at the table again. He didn\'t want to have this discussion, it was pulling up the ache, making it flare and hurt like a badly infected wound.

\"What?\" Lucius exclaimed loudly. \"I\'ll do no such thing! I don\'t want to touch the blood traitor even with my gloves on! Belphegor take him and throw his corpse into the flames! Curse that scheming little rat!\" Lucius continued to curse and growl for several minutes, pacing the room and glaring at Severus at times. How could Severus believe such lies? Didn\'t he have more trust and faith in him?

Lucius stopped and looked at Severus again, taking a deep breath to calm down slightly. \"And you believed him. You didn\'t even ask me if it was true, you swallowed his lies completely, not giving me a chance to defend myself! And you told me you loved me! What kind of love is that, hm?\" Lucius turned his back to Severus. He needed to regain his composure. One part of his mind stayed cool, and it was that part that recognised Black\'s false words as the arrangement he had expressed a longing for to Lucius, while still a boy.

\"Lucius...\"

\"No! No, you believed him, and you just walked out on me without even a word as to the reason.\" That hurt. Curiously enough, it hurt even more than Severus telling him it was over had done. Lucius hadn\'t believed that was possible, but there it was - raw, throbbing pain tearing his already torn heart asunder yet again. The trust between them had been a lie; when put to the test, it had proven weak and frail, easily broken.

\"He will pay for this. He will pay for everything he\'s done.\" Lucius\' voice was low and full of hate. Sirius Black had meddled once too many times, and certainly with the wrong person. He must be an idiot to think he would get away with this, Lucius thought, and closed his hands to fists as he turned again to face Severus. There was a cold smile on his face, cruelty glittering in his eyes. He would have revenge, sweet or bitter didn\'t matter at this point, the man would be punished. \"Everything!\" Lucius had once promised Severus that Black would be punished for the attempt on his life, and he saw now that he had waited too long.

Lucius stormed out of Severus\' laboratory in search for the perfect man for the job. Lucius had a plan and Peter Pettigrew was the best-suited pawn for the job. Pettigrew was Black and Potter\'s friend, but he was also very easy to intimidate, manipulate and control. It would work beautifully with the plan he had devised with Lord Voldemort earlier that day. It would rid him, and Severus, of Black and Potter, and at the same time the Dark Lord would have his chance at securing his position in this world, ridding himself of the threat of a potential Nemesis. There were some details that he had to plan carefully, but the gist of the plan was already there... Soon enough it could be put into play, and Sirius Black would take the blame for the unfortunate deaths of the Potters.

Murder had such interesting repercussions for the perceived perpetrator these days.
