The Seer

Author’s Note

You know the deal. Anything you recognize belongs to J.K. Rowling.

I tend to write what comes to mind. In many of the fics I’ve read, Severus is enamored with a strong willed Witch, either Hermione or an OFC who has a major attitude. I’m wondering, however, what if such a Witch weren’t to his liking? What if a sweet and kind Witch came to Hogwarts and he found himself falling in love with her? I’m tired of Sybil, frankly. She’s so loony that anyone can hardly take her seriously. It’s time for a Divinations Mistress who has her feet planted much more firmly on the ground than that crackpot.

I furthermore wanted to diverse from the idea that Severus would only be attracted to a very beautiful Witch. As a full-figured woman, I can tell you that we are not loved nearly enough. I suspect that many of my readers share my body type. This one’s for us.

This story involves a very intimidating and dark Severus and a very kind Divinations Mistress who finds him absolutely terrifying. Not sure where this will go, but I’ll give it a shot.

Enjoy!

Severus entered the Great Hall through the back teacher’s entrance and took his usual seat at the head table. He knew that Sybil had taken a teaching job out of country, so he expected her chair to be empty. It wasn’t. Her replacement had arrived and was sitting quietly listening to Dumbledore make his annual welcome speech. He had expected someone flaky and wild haired like Sybil, but the new Witch looked very different than her predecessor. She was extremely short and voluptuous, with long, curly, light brown hair that fell to the middle of her back. Instead of the traditional teacher’s robes, she wore an indigo tunic with a ring of gold colored runes around the neckline. He couldn’t make out her facial features, but she seemed to be calm.

“And now, I have a very special announcement to make.” Dumbledore said proudly, “As you all know, Professor Trelawney is no longer with us. I’d like to introduce you all to your new Divinations Mistress, Professor Amanda Collins.”

The Witch stood up and smiled warmly, then quickly sat back down. Severus couldn’t help but smirk when he noticed that her feet didn’t touch the ground. She couldn’t be over five feet tall. It was no wonder that her weight showed like it did. Though her appearance was less than picturesque, Severus was quite glad to see her. Sybil had irritated him for years with her flakiness, vague utterances of doom, and her unwelcome sexual advances towards him. The woman simply would not take no for an answer, no matter how many times he blew her off. He had made it very clear that he had no interest whatsoever in her, or the useless subject she taught with such zeal, but she persisted right up until the day before she left. She had shown up at his chambers, claiming that she loved him dearly and begging for at least one night with him before she left. Although he wasn’t above giving a Witch a sympathy fuck, he wasn’t about to give Sybil a reason to think he shared her romantic notions. He turned her down flat, and she left, heartbroken and crying her eyes out.

It was obvious this new Witch was muggleborn. Purebloods were never as short as she was. Albus had told the staff about the new Professor during the staff meeting yesterday morning. Everyone was shocked to hear that she was still single at age thirty-five. Albus didn’t elaborate on that, but instead talked about her exceptional gift with Divination and her high recommendations from the American Society of Seers. This was apparently her first time teaching. Before, she had worked for the American Ministry as a consultant. According to Albus, she was highly qualified and extraordinarily sweet. The old wizard had forgotten to mention how short she was. That had been a bit of a surprise.

Severus watched the sorting ceremony with interest, seeing that he now had five new Slytherins to add to his house. They were all purebloods from reputable wizarding families, which pleased him greatly. One of the boys looked as if he’d probably make the house Quidditch team in a year or two.

When the ceremony was over, Dumbledore made a few last minute announcements, firmly reminding the first year students about off-limits areas, then called for the feast to begin. As they ate, Severus noted that the new Witch didn’t touch the roasted meat, but instead ate freshly steamed vegetables and a grain and nut casserole that had been placed fairly close to her. It was beyond him why anyone would choose to be a vegetarian. To him, it seemed terribly unnatural.

Remus Lupin, who was sitting between the two of them, smiled at the Witch and said, “Welcome to Hogwarts, Professor Collins. I’m Remus Lupin. I teach Defense Against The Dark Arts.”

The woman returned his smile and in a very gentle voice replied, “It’s nice to meet you, Remus. Please, call me Amanda.” She then looked at Severus curiously, “And who might you be?”

Severus looked at her and casually answered, “Severus Snape. I’m the school’s Potionsmaster.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Severus.” She stated politely, “I’ve heard a lot about you. Your work is highly respected back in the States.”

“Thank you for the compliment, Miss Collins.” He said respectfully, “I hope the Astronomy Tower is to your liking.”

The Witch frowned. “Well, I’m going to have to do a lot of redecorating. The last Divinations Mistress was just a bit strange if you ask me.”

A smirk came across Severus’ face. “Ah yes, Sybil. She was very strange indeed, and equally as annoying.”

Remus looked at Amanda and chuckled, “Sybil had a huge crush on Severus. Unfortunately, the feeling wasn’t mutual. She wasn’t the least bit appealing, in looks or personality.”

Severus gave his fellow wizard a dark look and said, “Remind me that you let that slip the next time we’re sparring, Remus.”

“Well, I can hardly talk about someone else being ugly.” Amanda said softly, “But my Gods, all that gaudy junk and bright paint in the tower. It’s hardly conducive to a meditative state, not to mention an eyesore.”

“Sybil was a bit of a drama queen, I’m afraid.” Remus explained, “Anything to get attention, especially from Severus.”

Amanda looked the Potionsmaster over and replied, “Poor guy. That must have been terrible.”

Severus gave a nod and replied, “Oh, it was, I assure you. She once slipped a few drops of love potion into my coffee when I wasn’t looking. Apparently she didn’t realize that it only works if both parties are attracted to each other.”

Amanda cringed. “That’s just creepy.”

“It certainly is.” He agreed, “I must admit, I’m glad she’s been replaced.”

“You’ll have nothing to worry about from me, Severus. I’m quite aware of my appearance, so I keep to myself and leave everyone else alone.” She stated non-chalauntly.

His dark eyes looked her over. Granted, she was short and pudgy, but she had a pretty face and kept herself up. Why was she putting herself down like that? He decided to drop the subject and go on to something else. “So what are your plans for redecorating the astronomy tower?”

“Well, first I’m throwing out everything she left there except for the supplies. I have some beautiful medieval paintings that I’d like to put up.” She began, “And I think a nice, relaxing blue would be perfect for putting the students at ease.”

“That sounds reasonable.” Severus replied, “I’ll be happy to assist you if you’d like.”

“That would be nice. Thank you.” She responded cordially, “I can’t exactly reach very high. If you’re free after the feast, maybe you can come with me and give me some ideas.”

“That will be fine.” He replied, “I’ve thought for a long time that the tower was in bad need of an overhaul.”

The feast went on and the new professor was silent during the remainder of the meal. When it ended, Severus told one of the Slytherin prefects to lead the students back to the house, then made his way back to Amanda. “Alright, let’s do some brainstorming, shall we?”

Amanda smiled brightly. “Let’s.”
