Chapter 1: First Glance
Remus looked over at Sirius during class. As usual, his head was on his desk, and he was snoozing away through History. Remus, himself, happened to like history. It had everything, sex, scandal, controversy, and all sorts of secrets about the past that were right there for everyone to see. He didn’t understand how no one else could find history as fascinating as he did. Albeit, their teacher was a real bore, and you could tell he was no more into it then most of his students.
However, Remus loved it. He could probably have taught the class better himself, he’d actually make it good. He would show everyone just how interesting history really was. He looked over at Lily Evans who was absentmindedly taking notes. She was one of the few awake, but Remus knew it wasn’t anything interesting to her. He also glanced over at James and Peter. Both of them were gazing, mouths gaping open, into space.
He looked over at Sirius again. He had moved in the last 3 minutes. He turned his head so now Remus could see his face. He slept with his mouth closed.
Why do I notice these things? There must be something wrong here; I can't stop staring at him. Why do I keep having these . . . thoughts?
Lately, it was all he could do from imagining things he would never before in his life, imagine about one of his best friends.
I suppose it’s natural to be curious, I am 16 after all. I mean, it’s not like I really want him or anything. I mean . . . I’m still attracted to girls. Aren’t I?
Remus looked around that the girls in the class. There were quite a few lookers, he knew that for sure. There was Ashley Brown, Tanya Bellman, Natasha Newman, Alice Miller, and of course, Lily Evans. He’d had a small crush on Lily for the past 3 years, but no one knew about that.
Everyone in school knew that James was absolutely crazy about Lily. If James knew that Remus was also after her . . . well that would be a betrayal. And no girl was worth that. He found himself, lately, thinking less and less of her. But instead his mind would wander to thoughts of someone with darker eyes and hair.
He looked over at Lily again who had given up all hope of taking notes, and was too staring off into space. Her face was being cupped by her hand. She had wonderful hands . . . she had wonderful everything. He looked back at Sirius and compared the two.
Lily’s hair was curly and thick and a bright auburn. Her green eyes gleamed, and her soft voice floated across the room whenever she spoke. She had a soft, bell-toned laugh that used to send chills down his spine, and everything she did was delicate and graceful.
Sirius had shoulder-length black hair that was perfectly straight. He had piercing gray eyes, and a loud, slightly harsh, voice. He had a great, bark-like laugh. And he was anything but graceful or delicate. He was rough, aggressive, and obnoxious, but hilarious.
It took him a while to realize he was no longer paying attention. He jumped out of his day dreams and went back to work.

Sirius sat next to Remus at the table, stuffing his face. Remus who was never very hungry picked at his food with his fork. James and Peter were shoveling away as well. He looked over at Lily who was talking and laughing with her good friend Alice Miller. Alice flipped her long, thick, blonde hair over her shoulder while she talked. Lily ran her fingers through her hair gently and began to laugh some more at whatever Alice was saying.
“Hmm, Moony, do I see you checking out a girl?” Sirius asked suddenly.
Remus looked down at his plate. “Why would you think that?”
Sirius didn’t answer; he looked over at where Remus had been staring and smiled. “So, you fancy Alice I assume? Merlin knows you weren’t looking at Lily.”
“Better not have been,” James said, without looking away from his food.
“I was just staring off into space.” Remus sighed.
Sirius laughed that bark-like laugh of his and slapped Remus on the shoulder. “Well, if you’re looking for someone to have a little fun with, I’ll bet you anything that all you would have to do is ask, and Natasha would jump your bones in a second. She’s been noticing you man, I’m telling you. She keeps staring at you in Potions.”
Remus winced slightly at the sudden pain in his shoulder, but disregarded it when heat began to creep around his neck as he noticed that Sirius' hand was lingering on his shoulder.
“Is she really?” Remus thought about that, but didn’t really care for Natasha. If Sirius had noticed, it meant that Sirius was looking at him too during class. For some odd reason, this made Remus very happy. What is wrong with me? Why do I get happy at the idea of Sirius staring at me? Why do I keep noticing the way he smiles, or the way he says my name? The way he looks at me. Those eyes . . . why can’t I stop thinking about them?
“Something wrong, Moony?” James asked quietly.
“Oh . . . no. . .Nothing, I was just thinking.”
“So, you going for Natasha then?” Sirius asked quickly.
“Oh . . . I dunno. Maybe, but probably not. I never really saw her that way. But who knows, maybe I’ll start.” Remus saw the look on Sirius’ face at his words and quickly changed tunes. "I'm kidding. I'm not interested, really."
That look . . . I must have read him wrong. There is no way that he could be . . . jealous?
* * * *
Sirius looked away from Remus, too happy to hear that he wasn’t into Natasha. I don’t know why I’m so damn happy, but I am. I don’t really want Moony to jump her bones, or visa-versa. I don’t want anyone to.
Unknown to everyone, except James, Sirius had been having odd thoughts about Remus himself. James confronted him a while ago, saying there was something ‘off’ about the way Sirius was acting around him. Almost as if he had a crush on him.
It took a while, but Sirius finally admitted to James that he’d been having distracting thoughts about Remus lately. Instead of having a heart attack, James understood and completely supported any decision Sirius made about his sexuality.
“I’m not gay, Prongs!” He had cried out when James told him so.
“I didn’t say you were. But you know, it’s alright with me if you are.”
“I just . . . I dunno . . . I can’t seem to stop thinking about him. He invades my mind all day long. I mean, I know I still like girls . . . believe me. But there is something about him I just can’t shake.”
“Do you think he might possibly have thoughts like this about you.”
“James, let’s be reasonable, what are the chances?”
“About as good as you having feelings for him.” Sirius didn’t say anything to that. “No one can help who they fall for. And if, and I’m not saying you are, but if you’re gay then that’s just how you are. I guess what I’m trying to say is that you were just born that way. But if you do have feelings for him that doesn’t automatically make you gay.”
"It doesn’t?”
“No! Don’t be stupid. You said yourself; you’re still attracted to girls. But you and Moony have been friends for a long time. We’ve all grown close. It’s only natural to have feelings for a friend who you’re close to, guy or girl. It’s not only gay or straight or black and white, the whole sexuality thing is one BIG gray area.”
“Yeah yeah yeah. Life is one big fucking gray area.”
James laughed. “Well it’s true. Look, when you figure things out, don’t hesitate to come to me, okay.”
“. . . Okay.”
Sirius still hadn’t figured it out, but he knew one thing. The idea of Moony even talking to a girl made him somewhat jealous.
Maybe . . . maybe I really like him. He’s really nice and smart and not bad looking. He has nice eyes and a nice smile. I know he cares about me. He just looks . . . and his lips. . . Sirius couldn’t stop himself from imagining what they would feel like. Whoa . . . I guess I really do like him
. . . shit!
