Prologue

Time was everything

“I refuse to betray my father”

“Then you would betray me?” she whispered back barely holding the tears that were threatening to run down her face

“I haven’t betrayed you, Weasley” Her last name spat at her in anger, he hadn’t said it with such hate in a very long time. But he didn’t hate her, he hated her name. If she was anyone else he would not have to do this, he would not have to hurt her. She had once whispered to him “Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet?” Draco did not understand her saying it then, but he did now. He could only think how sweet the rose would be if her name was not Weasley, how sweet it would be not to be the cause of her tear filled eyes.

“You are going to betray us” she said sadly

“You are just a silly little girl, you don’t understand this, and you couldn’t begin to understand”

Ginny slapped him with everything she had. He deserved worse.

Time was everything

Her tears poured down her face. “You knew who and what I was and yet you stayed. You knew I would not go against him if it came down to it and yet you stayed. You knew I would do what was required by my family and yet you stayed. I am a Malfoy and you a Weasley and yet you stayed. You knew this would happen and you knew my decision and yet you stayed!” His voice becoming softer as he spoke, his pain barely showing through, but it was there.

Draco turned from the crying girl he loved. He was a Malfoy and he had to do what was right by his honoured family. He also had to do what would keep him alive for the longest and staying here to comfort her would not keep either of them alive. Draco made a hasty retreat from her presence not even looking at her, he would hurt her to save her.

“I hate you Malfoy” She screamed after his retreating back

Time was an eternity

Draco Malfoy was nothing. He knew that. He was scum, not worth the time of day. He knew that too. So Draco left her standing there crying, he left her to go to his father, to his father’s Lord and master.

Draco Malfoy was not brave. He knew that. He never had to be, he was a Malfoy, a Slytherin and his father’s son. He knew he never had to be brave a name would always be there to stop anyone trying to hurt him. So why did walking away from a small crying girl feel like the bravest thing he had ever done? Maybe because she didn’t care he was a Malfoy, and she certainly didn’t care that he was a Slytherin and until right now she had never been concerned because he was his father’s son. But the real reason it was the bravest thing he had done was because it was the most selfless. He left because he loved her.

Time was an eternity

Safely in private, Draco let the tears pour down his face that he would never allow in front of her. He was scared.

Time no longer held any relevance

He cried, sitting by the lake, where he had held her in his arms so many times. He cried for her, cried for what he was about to do, cried because what was so wrong had to be done and he cried for the loss his deeds would cause. Lastly he cried for himself.

Standing he walked towards Hogsmead and out of the school grounds. His white-blond hair moving in the wind, his eyes dry of tears and his feet following the path laid out so carefully for him by those who didn’t care about him. He tuned and saw his last glimpse of the castle, two figures stood at the spot he had just left. Neither of them Ginny, neither of them would stop him. They just watched him go without any concern, Draco only wished he could be as optimistic as they were.

Time no longer held any relevance.

Time was not relevant when you walked to your death.
