Laying the Ground Work

*****Chapter 1 Laying The Ground Work****

Severus knew that this day would come sooner or later.

At the foot of The Dark Lord was when he had first heard the idea. It had seemed ludicrous at the time. But as he realized how the Dark Lord and others had seized upon the idea he knew that eventually they would get their way. Powerful people and Money could achieve the impossible. The acceptance that it would indeed become a fact, a law, had led him to Planning Mode.

On the second day after the potential law was mentioned Snape started casting about for a suitable solution.

Severus Snape sat in the suburban living room of Mr. And Mrs. Granger. Harold and Betty. They had invited him to call them by their first nam The They welcomed this emissary from the magical world.

Mr. And Mrs. Granger were happy to have a teacher, a wizard from Hermione’s new school to come and talk to them. Of course they understood that Hermione was a witch or rather a witch in training. And yes, they knew that their daughter would excel at anything that she put her mind to.

Those were the only facts they took comfort in when they first sent her off to an unknown magical world. They couldn’t help being anxious. She was only 11. True not a young eleven but still 11. The anxiety had abated somewhat after the first few weeks of school. That is when they realized that she had made friends in her new world.

After that Hermione’s letters had been full of her new friends and all of the amazing things in the castle, and what they were being taught, and how smart her teachers were. After the first year, they had realized that their daughter had fully embraced her magical world. A world they could never be a part of and one they didn’t understand.

When Professor Snape showed up and started tutoring them on the way the wizarding world really worked wer were a more than a little astounded.

The witches and wizards could create; or rather transfigure any object into any other object. Instantly disappear and reappear somewhere else and not just in a room but around the world. Wizards and witches regularly traveled by fire or rather smoke up the chimney. They called it the Floo. The things they could do was truly amazing. The Grangers were enraptured.

Hermione had told them and of course they had read some of her text books but they had not actually seen any magic besides the wizarding pictures and Hermione insisted that didn't count.

Underage Magic was strictly regulated and Hermione could be expelled if she indulged their curiosity. Professor Snape performed some simple and complex magic. As the relationship developed he even Apparated them to Italy for lunch in one of his favorite Muggle Bistros.

Professor Snape warned them about keeping the visits from Hermione. He surmised that it would be best for all. All would become apparent very soon.

The Grangers were comfortable with Professor Snape (much to the shock of Hermione when she finally got an inkling of what had occurred).

One day Professor Snape started pointing out the differences, other than magical in their two worlds. The Social structure of the Wizarding world.

Pure Bloods ruled the wizarding world. Period!

Half-Bloods (it usually depending on which parent was a pure-blood as to the success a child could achieve).

And above house elves. (In most peoples eyes) Muggleborns.

Muggleborns, who no matter how talented, were usually prevented from rising in the ranks of power or position within the ministry based on birth not talent. Private Entrepreneurs were usually confined to the wizarding world for secrecy.

In order to get permission to have a Magical Business in the Muggle world the Ministry had to approve. The Ministry was ruled by Purebloods so without some type of Pureblood influence the petition was denied.

Even the success of a business in the Wizarding world was dependent of the Pureblood generosity. A few sentences placed in the correct world would insure that the business had as much success as a snowball on the beach.

These truths were hard to swallow for the Grangers. They loved their daughter very much and the fact that her birth was a liability in her new world hurt them greatly. They were positive that she could overcome any surmountable obstacle. But this sounded almost insurmountable, without the proper influences. The Grangers realized the seriousness of the situation when Snape loaned them several Wizarding History books. He had charmed the books so only they could read. Therefore it was only borderline Magical Contraband. He was sure Mr. Wey wey would understand, but it was always best to keep a low profile in his business.

The Grangers were very intelligent and found the lack of female historical leaders daunting. It seemed that even the ones that made their mark only held positions of power in their latter years. This seemed to support everything Snape had told them.

The Grangers started to delve deeper and to send letters to other wizarding families and soon they had another picture of the wizarding world.

Besides the so str structural----the morals and attitudes were positively Victorian.

Garments usually covered a minimum of 85%. This was considered modest. Women were to wear "Female" clothes. Slacks and Jeans were frowned upon in Adult Society.

In this world of arranged marriages, contracted brides, and weddings between strangers happened every day. Virginal wedding nights were required. The contracts placed a Magical Binding on the girl that prevented unwanted or wanted sexual intercourse. It was apparently the only way they could control the teenage boys as no restriction was placed up on them to remain chaste. An who were they in constant contact with. Girls that shouldn't or couldn't indulge them.

The bride could lose her life if she was not a virgin on her wedding night. They read of worse fates than the bride losing her life. They were horrified and knew that this must be an outdated practice. The book of Marriage Etiquette was only published the previous year.

The restriction on an underage girl outraged Betty Granger more than anything she had heard. This put women’s rights back 100 maybe even 200 years. This simply could not be correct.

An outraged letter to Professor McGonagall put the seal on Hermione’s fate.
