Narcissa froze in the doorway. It was the fourth time that week that she had to carry her injured son to his bedroom. She managed to pull together the strength to move forward and lift him from the floor. It always surprised her how light Draco was. Deep down she knew it was due to the fact that he often skipped meals and rarely left his room when he was home.
“Draco?” Narcissa’s voice was soft and comforting. Draco did not respond. His eyes were tightly shut and he was not breathing properly. Lucius had gone too far this time. Narcissa gasped with the realization that her little boy was dying. She hurried to his room and placed him carefully down on the bed. There had to be something she could do to help him.
Narcissa ran to her own room and searched through one of her many cabinets for potions that would help ease Draco’s suffering. She found a few items for pain and some for healing. After hiding them in her pockets she rushed back through the empty corridors to her son, praying that she was not too late.
Draco lay motionless on the bed. Narcissa knelt on the floor and lifted one of the bottles from her pocket. She opened it and forced the contents down Draco’s throat. Tears slid silently down her pale cheeks while she waited for some sign that her son was going to be all right. Minutes turned into hours while she sat soundlessly beside her seemingly dead child.
After what seemed like an eternity, Draco opened his eyes. “Mother?” He asked, turning his head to look at her. Narcissa smiled and handed Draco another potion. It would dull the pain that she knew he was feeling. Draco took it obediently.
“You get some rest. I’ll be back in the morning to check on you.” Narcissa stood up. The worst was over. She could go instruct the house elves to clean up the broken glass and furniture that had been scattered across Lucius’ office floor. Then she would make plans to prevent it from happening again.
It was very early when Narcissa returned to Draco’s room. The sky was still dark outside and no birds could be heard. Draco was asleep. Narcissa hated to have to wake him but his safety was more important. He could sleep later.
“Draco.” Narcissa softly shook her son, not wanting to hurt him. Draco sat up quickly. His eyes were wide with fear. “Its only me.” Narcissa pulled Draco into her arms.
“Why are you here so early?” There was confusion in Draco’s voice. Narcissa tried to give Draco her bravest smile. She hated what she was about to do but there was no way to avoid it.
“We are going somewhere safe for a while.” Narcissa turned away from Draco to hide the tears that had managed to escape. If she kept Draco around Lucius any longer he would be killed. In a few years she would bring him back. Once he was older and mentally strong enough to fight back.
Narcissa heard Draco sliding out of bed and dressing. She had already packed some clothes and food. They would pick those up at the front door. As much as it hurt, she couldn’t let what happened to her first child happen to Draco. No one knew about that little one. The family hept ept the baby a secret because of the many complications during the pregnancy. She had been unable to save that child from its father. Saving Draco would make up for it.
“I’m ready.” Draco’s voice cut through Narcissa’s thoughts. With a silent nod she led him out the door and down the main staircase. She silently prayed that Lucius was stasleasleep. If he caught them…she didn’t want to think about what would happen.
Draco followed Narcissa out the front door where they picked up a few bags. Narcissa had hired transportation to their destination before waking Draco. She was careful to make sure none of it would get back to Lu. S. She did not want him to know where they were going. Draco fell asleep during the ride. Narcissa had suggested he try getting some rest. She prayed through the entire trip. A few hours later they arrived.
Narcissa woke Draco as the small and empty cottage appeared. Draco gathered the bags and walked towards the door.
“Draco?” Narcissa followed Draco closely. “I want you to know that I will be back. I promise.” Draco turned around to face Narcissa, a shocked look in his eyes. He must have expected her to stay with him.
“What do you mean you will be back? You aren’t leaving me here!” Draco dropped the bags. Narcissa looked at the ground. She could not face her son. Not when he looked so hurt.
“In a few years I will come back to get you. You have to stay here, where it is safe.” Narcissa mumbled. She felt dreadful.
“What about school? What will you tell everyohen hen I’ve suddenly disappeared?” Draco shouted angrily.
“I have all of that under control. You will still be going to school. I just have to find a way to get you there.” Narcissa had thought of almost everything. She would contact the headmaster and inform him that Draco would still be attending but Lucius was not to know about it. Letters could be sent to a friend of Narcissa’s and she would pick them up there. She would send all of his school supplies before September first. Lucius would think that he killed his son. Once Narcissa got home she would tell him that Draco was dead and she had the body taken care of. That would explain her absence.
“Under control? You have it undertroltrol?” Draco backed away from his mother. “What am I supposed to do here until you come back for me?”
“I will send you whatever you need. Do not write home.” Narcissa sighed. “In a few days I will send you a letter. I want you to write back to where that letter comes from.” Narcissa knew a few friends who she could go to for help with the situation.rcisrcissa ran back to the vehicle and got in, sending it back home before Draco could respond. If she stayed any longer she knew Draco would convince her to take him back with her. She could not do that. One child was dead because of her already. Her conscience could not handle another one.
