Chapter 1: The Engagement
The smell of pine was rich in the air as the two little boys fled into the solitude of the darkness outside, each carrying one of their new Christmas presents. The presents were small wands, only about 6 inches long, that would shoot real sparks when flicked the correct way. Of course in later years these \"toys\" would be recalled, but as it was now, their parents didn\'t see any harm in giving them to the boys.
Their laughter filled the air like sweet music as the boys, one raven haired and one platinum blonde, raced down towards the stables at Malfoy Manor, having escaped the large Christmas party that the Malfoys held each year.
\"I win!\" an eight year old Sirius laughed, earning a sneer from his companion.
\"Only because I let you!\" the young Lucius whined.
\"Yeah right, Lucy. You must like me winning an awful lot then cause I always do,\" the raven haired boy teased, sticking his tongue out.
Lucius narrowed his gray eyes, and then focused back on the reason they had left the party.
\"Come on, lets try out our new wands!\"
Sirius nodded happily, following Lucius into the stable, heading strait for a stack of hay. The two boys grabbed handfuls of the course feed, and brought it to the bathing stall, ing ing it upon the concrete surface. With wide grins, both boys flicked their wands at the hay. Golden streams sparked out of the ends of their \"toys,\" causing the bundle to catch fire, and they cheered happily, dancing around their new accomplishment.
They spent the next 20 minutes gathering more hay, wood, leaves, and anything that would burn, bringing it back to the concrete, and lighting it on fire. Though after a while Lucius became bored with this, and leaned against the wall, his eyes darting around looking for some other form of amusement. A grin that was much too wicked for a boy his age crossed his features as he gazed at the solid black Pegasus that was shackled by its\' hooves in a far stall.
Lucius hated that animal. He was completely untamed and wild, wouldn\'t let a soul ride him. He often wondered why his father didn\'t simply get rid of it, but there was no telling what went through that man\'s mind.
\"Come on, Siri, I\'ve got an idea,\" he threw over his shoulder as he approached the chained animal.
Sirius frowned after the boy, and reluctantly left his dieing fire to follow Lucius who came to a stop outside the black Pegasus\' stall. The creature was looking at them with wide eyes, stamping its\' foot menacingly on the ground, which only served to make the young Lucius smile broadly and chuckle.
\"Oh you think you can scare me away, do you? Well, take this!\" the blonouthouth said before pointing his wand at the creature\'s hooves, sending sparks crackling.
The Pegasus let out a loud cry, trying in vain to rear up, and back away. Lucius laughed heartily, and repeated the process, singeing the silky black hair above the hooves gray.
\"Lucius! Stop!\" Sirius yelled, trying to pull the wand out of the boy\'s hand, a deep frown on his face.
Sirius loved animals, and he couldn\'t bear to see one being tortured like this.
\"What\'sng wng with you, Black?! It\'s just a stupid animal. Won\'t even let anyone ride him. Come on, you give it a go!\" Lucius said, breaking free of the raven haired boy\'s grasp, and saw that Sirius had no intention of doing so.
\"Awww...is little Siri too tender hearted to play?\" the boy said with a hearty laugh. \"Why don\'t you go run back to mummy then?\"
Sirius narrowed his eyes, and launched at Lucius, sending both of them toppling to the ground, hands and fists flying until there was a loud CRACK. Both looked to find that Lucius\' wand had broken in the struggle.
~The Summer of 1977~
That was the memory that Sirius Black thought about as he laid back against the head board of his large four poster bed on a dull July evening. It had been the beginning of many years of hatred between the two, and Sirius had despised the boy and his family ever since... And to be perfectly honest, Sirius hated his own family as well. In the end on that Christmas Eve, Lucius had of course run to his daddy, crying that Sirius had broken his new toy. It didn\'t matter that Lucius had been torturing an animal, Sirius was the one to get into trouble, and had received quite a lashing from his own father.
He sighed deeply as a knock at the door shook him from his thoughts.
\"Are you ready to go, Sirius? We don\'t want to be late for your cousin\'s engagement party,\" his mother said, cracking the door to his room open, and piering inside.
\"But why do I have to go? I don\'t like either of them!\" he complained, sounding much younger than his 16, almost 17 years.
\"We have already discussed this, Sirius. You will go to the party, and pretend to be happy for Narcissa and Lucius. You are already enough of an embarrassment as it is without us showing up at their engagement party without you being with us,\" she said in her usual cold and demanding tones before slamming the door in her wake.
Sirius huffed with annoyance. He really hated both Lucius and Narcissa, though he figured that they would make quite a perfect match. Both were cold hearted Slytherins that cared about nothing else but themselves. His cousin, Narcissa Black, was about the most vain person he knew, and that was saying quite a bit considering that her soon to be husband was about as self absorbed as they come. They were lucky that they were wealthy, and would be able to afford separate bathrooms.
With a sigh he headed down the stairs, finding his \"family\" there already waiting for him. The three of them looked like the perfect picture of a wealthy wizarding family. All wearing elegant and expensive robes in black, green, and silver over dress cloths of the same colors, and each of them sneering at him for, he was guessing, taking so long. His mother was completely garbed in Slytherin green, with silver trim, and both his brother and his father wore mostly black, in contrast with his own dark maroon and gold robe worn over a form fitting black suit, his raven hair hanging loosely about him, just past shoulder length.
\"Don\'t we look very Gryffindorkish tonight,\" his brother Regulus said, observing him critically.
The boy was a complete prat, and was of course sorted into Slytherin last year like the rest of his family had been. He was a good 6 inches shorter than Sirius, standing at about 5\'5\", had short ebony hair, and light bluish-gray eyes. He always seemed to have this air of arrogance and contempt about him, and could usually be seen wearing a sneer, well at last when his gaze was directed at Sirius anyways. Regulus was considered \"the good son\" by his parents, having begun following in their parents footsteps. Where Sirius was absolutely nothing like any of them.
He was the first Gryffindor in a long line of Slytherins, and he actually had a good heart. He hated the dark arts, and never discriminated against people because of what kind of blood they had. About the only trait he did acquire from his family was arrogance, though Sirius was more inclined to think of it as being confident. He was, after all, insanely beautiful; tall, dark, and handsome, and he was good at just about anything he did.
\"Yes, and you look just like you always do, Regulus; a slimy Slytherin snake,\" Sirius replied with a smirk.
\"That\'ll be enough, Sirius!\" his father yelled. \"I won\'t have you ruining your cousin\'s big night, so you better keep that attitude in check!\"
~*~*~*~
Half an hour later, which was full of Sirius being ridiculed on everything from his cloths to his attitude, the Black family arrived at Malfoy Manor in a large old fashioned style carriage pulled by six sleek, midnight-black bicorns. Each creature was standing tall and proud, trained to perfection, their two silver horns almost sparkling in the moon li and and every bit as beautiful as the carriage which looked as if it was matched perfectly to the creatures, glittering silver, black, and in some places emerald green.
Sirius was the last to exit the carriage thru the door that magically opened for them, and he scowled up at Malfoy Manor as if the very place was made of pure malice... Though that wasn\'t too far from the truth as the mansion could be quite intimidating if it was your first visit. Large, almost imposing marble statues stood in the lush green grounds. Huge, so realistic looking it was scary, stone gargoyles guarded the large front doors on top of tall pillars. The house was so huge that you could literally get lost in it, which Sirius had the great displeasure of finding out first hand when he was six years old.
With a defeated sigh, Sirius followed his family up the large, gray marble steps to the front door, which immediately opened for them, showing a huge entrance hall, a few scattered guests mingling, and looking over to see who the new arrivals were. Barty Crouch and his wife were the first to greet Sirius\' parents, walking over to them as if they were the most important people there, which of course was the norm for this group of people.
Barty Jr. stood in the wide opened door frame that led into the ballroom, and grinned mischievously as always to Regulus upon catching his eye.
Sirius\'s brother clapped him on the back roughly.
\"Do try not to embarrass us, Sirius,\" he baited before walking briskly over to Crouch, Sirius sneering at Regulus\' retreating form as he made his way over to his classmate.
Sirius waited a few moments for the two of them to clear out before making his way into the ballroom, which never failed to over whelm him by its massive size. A white and silver marble floor covered the vast area, expensive shoes and slippers gliding over it as guests danced to the enchanted band which consisted of several types of instruments, all sparkling in perfect condition, floating in mid-air playing beautifully by themselves. A table as long as one of the Hogwarts house tables lined one wall filled with an extravagant amount of food of every kind with lush flowers, and sparkling ice sculptures for decoration. Not far from there stood a full bar, with a few already drunk looking wizards laughing merrily as if they weren\'t really a group of bigoted murderers who blindly follow some crazed wizard bent on world domination.
His eyes scanned the guests, most wearing black, green, and silver, though a few grabbed in other bright colors, undoubtedly in order to stand out amongst the crowd. Sirius\' blue eyes finally came to rest upon one of the most beautifully sculpted arses he had ever seen. Black dress pants stretched over the back side as its owner who was bent, retrieving something off the floor. Sirius\' eyes wandered slowly upwards as the person straightened up, taking in what appeared to be a fully muscled back, then a long tail of platinum blonde hair pulled together by a black ribbon. He turned around revealing the pointed features and grey eyes of Lucius Malfoy, who noticed Sirius gapping at him, and shot him a smirk in reply.
Sirius narrowed his eyes, sneering a little at ice-ice-blonde before looking away in disgust, and walked over to help himself to some punch that was bubbling in a clear crystal cauldron, though the bubbles were only a small charm for show as Sirius found the liquid to be quite cool.
\"Like what you saw, Black?\"
Sirius scowled down at the punch as if it were the one to just say that, and turned around facing Malfoy who was flanked by Avery and McNair. The Gryffindor rolled his eyes.
\"Get over yourself, Malfoy. I was merely trying to guess just how many pounds you\'ve put on over the summer. You look a little chunky around the edges e.\"e.\" A blatant lie of course, but he couldn\'t very well admit that he was indeed staring at his rival\'s arse with anything other than contempt.
Lucius narrowed his eyes angrily. He hated it when his appearance was insulted. After all, he did spend a good deal of time to look perfect, and he knew that he looked damned good, so dismissed the insus bes being nothing more than a bold faced lie....Which it was.
\"You\'re just jealous that your cousin landed someone like me while you\'re getting stuck with some ugly cockatrice,\" Malfoy said coldly, his friends laughing merrily at the comment.
\"Now you\'re not even making sense. Either tell me what the bloody hell you\'re going on about, or just leave so I can breath without smelling your foul stench.\" Yet anougher lie.
Malfoy laughed quite amusedly.
\"You...you mean you don\'t....know? They haven\'t even....told you yet?!\" The Slytherin said between gales of laughter.
Sirius just narrowed his eyes even more, his arms crossed over his broad chest, waiting for a straight answer.
\"This is just too wrong! Which makes it oh soooo sweet.\" Lucius began to recover somewhat fris lis laughter, standing up straight.
\"Well, Sirius Black, it is my great pleasure to be the first to inform you that you are to wed Justine Borsha....Though I hear it took an awful lot of effort on your father\'s part to get even her to marry you.\" The Slytherin pointed to a rather plump girl, dressed all in black with silver trim. She had fly away dark brown hair, dull brown eyes, and was hanging on her father\'s arm, who happened to be absorbed in a conversation with Sirius\' father. Sirius just stared in disbelief.
Malfoy slugged Sirius on the shoulder not too gently, a wild smirk playing across his face.
\"Go get \'em tiger.\"
The Gryffindor narrowed his eyes, and pushed past Malfoy, more so shoving him with his shoulder as he made is way over to his father with Malfoy and his cronies following nonchalantly behind, keeping a safe enough distance away to where they wouldn\'t get involved, but would still be able to hear what was said.
\"Could I have a word with you for a second, Father?\" Sirius asked, trying to keep his whits about him.
\"Sirius! I\'m surprised at you! You\'re being rude,\" his mother said a little sternly, but then smiled sweetly, placing an appearingly loving hand on his shoulder.
\"This is Justine, Dear. You should know her. She\'s in your year, in Slytherin house....Why don\'t you have a nice danith ith her while your father and I discuss some things with Justine\'s parents.\" Sirius knew it wasn\'t a question even if she was using that sweet mother\'s voice that only made him sick to hear her use. It was definitely a command.
\"So it\'s true is it?! You\'re trying to marry me off like some animal that you can breed?!\" Sirius spat out through gritted teeth turning to his father, the enchanted band still playing, but most of the guests stopping to look at the rapidly unfolding scene.
Sirius\' father looked like he was about to explode with the way his face was turning red with anger, and the way his eye was beginning to twitch nervously.
\"How dare you speak that way to me you insolent, ungrateful little brat!\" Sirius could hear Regulus somewhere off to the side snickering, and several of the guests murmuring word app approval at his father\'s words.
\"Well, I won\'t do it! I\'d rather lose everything I had before I\'d marry some snake!\" He wasn\'t being unkind without reason. He did know Justine, and found her to be just like every other Slytherin; untrustworthy and cruel....And after all Sirius was at the age of consent; 16, almost 17 infact, and could legally make his own decisions.
\"You will marry her, or you will indeed lose everything,\" he gritted out, now trying to be more calm, Sirius knowing that his words rang true.
\"Well, I\'m not going to wait for you to take it away then. I don\'t want your filthy money! You can keep it!\"
Lucius watched Sirius storm out of the manor with amusement and laughter in his grey eyes. He had to admit though that Sirius was awful brave to do what he just did. He himself would never have the guts to stand up to his father like that...though his father would have probably killed him on the spot, and anyways, Sirius must be crazy to give his whole family fortune up like that. What was marring some bitch if it meant you\'d have power and wealth? He didn\'t necessarily want to marry Narcissa Black. Even if she was beautiful, rich, and pure blooded, she was a woman, and Lucius preferred men. But if it meant that he had to marry her in order to come into his trust funds and then inherent the Malfoy family fortune he\'d do it in a heart beat. After all, there was always extra marital affairs.
~*~*~*~
A few short hours later Sirius found himself sitting in the Potter\'s living room, drinking a cup of tea, six worried looking eyes focused on him, and everything he could fit in his trunk sitting off to the side.

A few short hours later Sirius found himself sitting in the Potter\'s living room, drinking a cup of tea, six worried looking eyes focused on him, and everything he could fit in his trunk sitting off to the side.
