Saving the world and other such nonsense

Chapter one

The little snake cometh

In the beginning God created the earth, light, dark, animals, foliage and finally man. In seven days one being created all life as we know it, this omnipresent being brought in to existence not only incalculable species but also a race so advanced it had self awareness and all was as it is now and it will stay this way until the end of time.

That is the story of genesis, one passed down from father to son, mother to daughter for millennia. I never believed the stories my Aunt would make us read every Sunday from the large leather bible she had sitting on the coffee table. I never believed in a higher power God or otherwise.

This summer everything changed, I’m still not sure that I could pick up that leather bound book and read the passages without feeling the all to familiar feeling of disgust, but now I know we, the human race, did not come in to existence by accident or catastrophe, there is a plan there is something greater than man. My name is Harry Potter, I am a wizard, I am a warrior, I am a skeptic and this is the story of how I changed the world.

Private drive was quiet in the midmorning stillness of summer. The adults not allowed the reprieve of summer vacation had created a ruckus early cars roaring to life as they rushed to cookie cutter offices, just as they had every weekday that summer. Children meanwhile, left to their own devices kept to the living rooms, televisions and most importantly air conditioning of the large homes, well all the children of Private drive but one. That one child, well not really a child as his seventeenth birthday was hours away, was me.

I don’t remember a lot about that summers day, there was in my estimation not much to remember; the weeds were few, the sun was hot and I was fairly certain that I was going to have a rather nasty sun burn by the next day. Looking back I wonder how no one ever noticed that I was always outside, even on the hottest days, although I suppose it had to do with the privacy fence my uncle had installed on summer not long after I turned eight. In any case that is not the point of this story nor does my families neglect matter much to my story.

I say much because had I been inside on this summer day I would have never found the first clue to the puzzle that would change everything. I am sure you’re wondering what I mean by change everything, yes? Because nothing changes “everything” in fact very few things actually have any impact on the world as a whole.

But please believe me when I say that after I followed this puzzle piece to fruition nothing was ever the same again, not just for me but for the universe as a whole. In any case this particular summer morning I finished the weeding early leaving hours of inactivity that I will not for the sake of both of our sanities recount. What I will say is that these hours were spent reclined beneath the foliage of the azalea bush looking up through the leaf covered branched in to the clear blue sky.

It was there that a small green garden snake came upon me.

“ What a sssstrange creature,” he  exclaimed aloud, coming to rest his head near my own.

“Why thank you little friend.” I hissed back spirits lifted at finding an intelligent being to converse with.

“How isssss it that you can ssssspeak to and understand me hatchling?” He asked climbing up my body to look in to my eyes.

“I wasssss born thisssss way, can you ssssstay for a while it getsssss ssssso lonely out here.” I asked thinking to assuage my boredom until my Aunt let me in to cook.

“I cannot young one for I have very important thingsssss to do before the fire ball once again fallsssss from the sssssky. But if you follow me you may sssssee a wonder no human hasssss ever laid eyesssss on.” His lithe body started to move quickly off of my body and in to the grass where he took off towards the garden gate.

I was intrigued, and it was more than I had planned for the rest of my afternoon so as quickly as I could without destroying any plants I took off after my new friend. We stopped just short of the garden gate next to an old oak tree, the snake for that is what I must call him as to this day I do not know his name, hissed to the trunk and to my amazement the bark cracked open to reveal a shining blue stone that radiated heat.

“Thisssss, isssss yoursssss now young one, I was sent here today by the elders with orders to find the speaker and give in to his possession the stone of great light. This has been done, now I must journey great lengths to tell all that will listen that the time has finally come. Do not worry little speaker he will know of you when the time comes.” I blinked at the little snake as I grabbed the warm pulsing stone, still in a daze I watched the tree close and the little garden snake slither away faster than my brain could comprehend the hand fate had dealt me. I was once again part of some sort of cosmic game, I sighed in defeat my life never got easier.

This all happened as I mentioned earlier the day before I turned seventeen, the last day I may add that I ever had to see Private drive. For this reason by eleven o’clock the stone was safely stored away in my chest and quickly forgotten in lieu of my impending freedom.
