**********
They’d always make Harry sit in the corner and watch, warning him not to say a word. They made him watch his cousin Dudley greedily tear open the piles of brightly wrapped Christmas presents, and then hurriedly move on to the next gifts. Dudley taunted Harry that no one liked him, not even Santa. That’s why he only got stupid, ugly presents. But Harry didn’t believe it. Someone liked him, he had proof.
Finally, after Dudley had finished unwrapping all his presents and was once again screaming that he hadn’t got enough, Harry was shoved back into the cupboard under the stairs, and the door was locked behind him.
Harry waited until he heard his aunt and uncle, along with a protesting Dudley, leave to visit Aunt Marge for the rest of the day. Then and only then, did Harry quietly look inside the tin he kept on a shelf over the head of what served as his bed.
Harry’s face broke into a grin. There it was, just like it always was since the year he turned five. His one Christmas present. A green and red candy cane tied with a bright red bow and a tag that said, 'To Harry, Merry Christmas'. He never knew how it got there, he was sure it wasn’t from his aunt or uncle. He liked to think it was Santa, or maybe even magic.
Slowly, Harry removed the bow and smoothed it out on the blankets. He would save the ribbon and tag, like he had all the others. Next he carefully tore a slit in the wrapper so that only a little bit of the candy cane would stick through. Being Christmas, he let himself break off a tiny piece before gently sliding the candy cane back in the wrapping and putting it back into the tin. Now that he was older, he was able to save the sweet for months and only take licks every now and then, without giving any hint to his aunt and uncle that he had it. The first time he ate it all at once, and they had noticed the peppermint scent and accused him of stealing Dudley’s sweets. Uncle Vernon had whipped him so he could barely sit for days. Harry was very careful after that.
But it was Christmas, and Harry wasn't going to dwell on that bad time, he'd enjoy his gift and play with the red ribbon, making sure it was hidden before the Dursleys got home.
Harry leaned back against the wall and softly hummed, 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas'. He gave a little smile knowing that someone did like him.
“Thank you, Santa,” he said. “Merry Christmas.”
