Remus sat alone in the train’s compartment trying to read his secondhand Hogwarts: A History, but was having difficulty concentrating. He turned and gazed out the window to see a mother hugging her son as he pulled towards friends who called out for him. Remus was looking forward to making friends. At home, he could read his books whenever he wanted and roam through the forest for hours. But he had no one to talk to. Hogwarts would be a whole new world for him.
He couldn’t believe he was heading for Hogwarts! The thought filled him with excitement and dread, but he couldn’t wait to meet his new schoolmates, and the Headmaster had reassured him that everything would be okay.
The car door opened and he quickly lowered his head to his book. He peeked from beneath his fringe and saw a girl with brilliant red hair flounce in, throwing her bag on the floor and taking a seat by the window. A lanky boy followed and carefully placed his luggage overhead, then sat next to her. His black hair hung limp and straight about his shoulders, and a too-large nose dominated his face.
“I’ve never met two boys more rude in my life!” the girl said. “I don’t care what house I end up in, as long as it’s not with them.”
Book forgotten, Remus couldn’t help but stare as his curiosity got the better of him. The girl ranted, but it was the boy’s face that held his attention. Hope mixed with longing chased across his features. Remus knew he should look away, but the intensity of the other boy fascinated him.
The girl scrunched up her face and crossed her arms. “They're just arrogant toerags!” Remus sat quietly as the girl whinged on, watching the dynamics play out between the two.
Soon she calmed and focused on Remus. She tossed back her hair, smiled brightly and held out her hand. “Hi, I’m Lily Evans, and this is my friend Severus Snape.”
Startled, Remus shook hands, smiling shyly in return. “Hullo. My name’s Remus Lupin.”
A soft snort escaped Severus as he locked eyes with Remus. “Of Romulus and Remus fame no doubt. Either you’re a werewolf, or your parents have an unnatural obsession with Roman mythology.” The dark eyes trapped him like a cornered hare and Remus froze, caught in the act of offering his hand to the boy.
Remus grew cold, withdrawing his hand. Severus’s eyes held Remus fast. He wanted to escape, and yet... wanted to stay. His parents told him he shouldn’t be able to feel the wolf inside him, but he could feel the wolf stirring, and his nostrils flared. The faint scent of old books filled his mind, and his world narrowed to the strange boy sitting across from him. Here, was someone who understood the dark. This was someone both he and the wolf wanted to know better.
“Come on Sev, don’t be like that. Shake his hand.” Lily jabbed her elbow into Severus’s arm, and he turned to her with an indulgent smile, the corner of his mouth lifting in a lazy, half grin.
When Severus turned back and extended his hand, Remus was again mesmerized. He'd just met Severus, so why couldn’t he look away?
Remus reached out slowly, hesitant to touch someone who, so quickly, had guessed his secret. But when Severus rolled his eyes and started to pull away, Remus lunged forward and grabbed his hand, startling them both. The moment their palms touched, magic shot between them, and Severus’ eyes widened. An intense vibration heated their hands with an almost audible hum as it passed back and forth. Ghostly forms appeared in Remus’s vision and a presence lightly brushed his mind.
Lily’s concerned voice broke through the still, charged atmosphere. “Are you all right? Is something wrong?”
“No!” Both of them answered, jerking their hands back simultaneously, eyes still wide at what they had experienced.
“Are you sure?” Lily asked, her tone laced with worry. “Because I thought I felt something.”
Severus’s eyes never left his face, boring into him even as Severus turned his head towards Lily. When he finally looked at her, Severus's expression was as neutral as it had been when he’d entered the compartment. “Everything’s fine. I was surprised, that’s all.”
Pursing her lips, Lily said, “If you say so, but I -”
The door slid open, and they looked up as two young girls entered the carriage.
Remus ducked back behind his book, seizing the distraction to think. He could still feel the remnants of magic pulsing in his hand, spontaneous magic that he’d only heard about from his mother. Now he'd have the chance to learn more about it. As Lily welcomed the newcomers, he stole a look at Severus and their eyes met. Severus was studying him intently and flexing his fingers where they had touched.
It would be a long journey to Hogwarts. Remus didn’t fully understand what had happened, but he was certain of one thing. The magic that had sparked between them was something special. He was more excited than ever to arrive at school, and especially to learn more about this strange, dark-eyed boy, Severus Snape.
