Chapter 1: Temporary Bonding
"Oh, Ginny! I'm so nervous!"
"Don't worry, Hermione, everything'll be fine. You've been waiting for this so long, after all."
Yes, Hermione Granger had been waiting for this; the day her boyfriend Ron would pull his head out his arse and make a proper witch of her. They’ve been going on for three years, and just three months ago, Ron finally proposed. It had been the best day of her life; full of romance and laughter. Now, though…There’s just this sick feeling in her stomach. The one that usually tells her she isn’t really making the best choice.
“Hermione, come on! You don’t want to be late to your own wedding, do you?”
If Hermione is honest with herself, something she tries to be as much as emotionally possible, she’s just settling. Over the three years they’ve been together, the Gryffindor witch has noticed a lot of flaws in Ron’s personality. He never doted on her the way other boys did on their girlfriends. Ron is far from romantic. Possibly why the sex leaves much to be desired and Ron rudely sleeps like a turbo-powered lawnmower without any spells to assure her comfort. She knows this isn’t what a woman should think of her fiancée, and she knows that most girls would insist she can do better. The problem is that Hermione isn’t all that sure she really can. It’s not like boys exactly throw themselves at her. She’s the quiet, yet ambitious, bookworm who works at the Ministry and heads/funds numerous charities for women, muggle-borns, house elves, and children. No one has ever suggested to her an interest in her physically or emotionally. Ron at least wants her, so it’s good. She figures she can live a peaceful life with him, if not an entirely happy one.
As she walks up the aisle, she can’t help but think that nothing much is going to change, and that makes her just a little bit sad. She always thought that when she would get married, it would signify the end of a life of loneliness. No more would she be lonely little Hermione Bookworm Granger sitting on the sidelines waiting for someone to come and scoop her up; pining hopelessly for her Prince Charming. She should be trilled, but she isn’t, ’cause she’s about to step up on the platform and claim she’s giving everything to Ron when she’s still waiting. Secretly, she’s still that lonely little bookworm sitting on the pavement; longing.
“We are gathered here today…”
She’s a grown woman though, and she’s tired of waiting; tired of the whispers that still haunt her. At least people will now think that Hermione Granger is off the market; that yes, someone was crazy enough to make a proper witch of her and provide her a nice, cushy wedding.
“If anyone here objects…”
What happened to her? Why is she still waiting when others like Lavender Brown aren’t? Why can’t plain old Hermione Granger just ever catch a break?
“…hold your peace.”
She was barely paying attention to the proceedings. She merely said her vows when prompted, so when her magic crawled out of her body and shot towards not Ron, but someone else entirely, she never noticed. All she heard were the scandalized gasps.
“Hermione?”
Her name spoken with such a clear tone of hurt woke her out her trance and she worried she’d missed the prompting for the kiss. When her lips were rebuffed with a cheek, she grew confused.
“Hermione? Do you have something to tell me?”
When she turned, the whispers grew louder as people who barely knew her questioned her morals. Some were glaring, others were smirking and a familiar dread overcame her when she saw Ginny looking at her with a glare of betrayal.
“How could you!?”
Yes, people. Ginny’s glare tells it all. Instead of becoming Hermione Jane Cringer Weasley, she’s become Hermione Jane Granger Potter.
“Well, Mr. Potter. You may kiss the bride.”
Pandemonium ensued.
