Merlin's Word
Authors Note This is the prologue to my very first chaptered fanfic. It took me a while to get here and i'm excited to actually start. This is a trial to see how you guys like the writing so PLEASE leave feed back for me! And stick with me!
The mist swirled around his feet, rising faster than he could move. It ran over the stones of the makeshift path as if it was water, before tracing its way up the trees. It seemed to lick at his skin, leaving its imprint in the form of goose bumps and shivers that ran down his spine in a constant stream. It clung to his clothes as he tried to wade his way through it, weighing him down, trying to drag him under. The boy gritted his teeth and pushed on.
Mineee
The menacing whisper reached his ears, causing his steps to quicken. His eyes moved frantically trying to take in every movement; every shadow that whipped through the mist that now caressed his thighs. He tried to ignore it, writing the whisper off as his overactive paranoia, they can’t know that it was him, they just can’t. A distinct movement within the mist caught his eye. He froze, his eyes focused on the gliding of a shadow, dark gray among the white. Fear reverberated through his body as the shadows took form, twisting into a long body, melding together into a head.
No... No they can’t know…
He took a step back as the shadow snake reared its head from the white blanket it was born from. Its tongue lashed, tasting him, smelling him. It turned its head towards him before opening its eyes revealing the blood red colour of its pupils. They locked eyes, snake and boy, caught in a moment of recognition and dread. The boy knew they had him, knew that his actions had caught up to him. There was nothing left to do but run.
Tearing his eyes away from the creatures he shook his head, reaching his hand out to grasp at his jean’s pocket. His mind raced, searching for some sort of plan to survive this, to just get out of the forest.
If you get to the edge, just get to the open field, you’ll be ok. They won’t attack you in the open, they can’t risk it… Not now.
The voice worked its way through the terror that was holding onto his mind, urging him to move. Its soothing tones calmed him for a moment, guiding him past his fear.
Keep calm, I’m here with you.
His fingers clasped around the familiar length of wood of his wand as the ideas came in bursts. The snake hissed, edging forward through the mist, its grey body throwing up tongues of white as it moved. Its neck flattened as it caught onto the boy’s movements, bearing its fangs in warning. The boy knew that he couldn’t fight it. This was only the start.
Lifting the wand he pointed it at the ground in front of the snake,
“Incendio”
He hissed the spell, watching as the orange flames burst out of the tip, spreading across the ground in a barrier between him and the creature. If he couldn’t stop it, at least he could try slowing it down. As the heat hit him, he let a smile sweep across his lips for a moment letting the terror leave him as he watched the flames. This moment was short lived as a harsh laugh rang throughout the forest in a wake of a cold, heavy presence. The fire flickered, even its searing heat was no match for the toxic presence that now seeped in replacement for the mist and soon it was nothing but a simmering memory.
Try and fight me boy…. You know you are mine…
The mist changed, turning colour from the bright white, to gray, to black. It sucked in the life forces around it, trees groaning in agony as it manifested before its prey. It radiated evil, killing all the good within its reaching aura. Terror seeped back into the boy’s bones, all hope leaving him. He was going to die.
Run…
The voice in his head broke the hold that the presence had on him and in the likeness of a spooked dear, he ran. His feet pounded on the ground and he tore away from the presence, ripping himself through the grabbing vines and stumbling over hidden roots. His determination to beat this creature kicked in, he wasn’t going to lose. Not now. Not ever.
Keep going… Keep going… Keep going.
The chant echoed through his ears, drowning out the manic giggle that seemed to be coming from every direction. It urged him on, encouraged him not to give up despite the burn in his chest and legs.
The evil followed him, pressing on him, snapping at his ankles like a rabid dog. It taunted him, mocking him in his effort to escape. It knew as well as he did that it was fruitless, but at least he could say that he had tried. The boy put his head down, focusing on putting one foot in front of the other rather than the inevitable.
Such a wasted effort…. You know you are mine… No matter where you go… no matter how well you hide… I will find you… I will come for you…
He shook his head as the words crept into his mind, mingling with the growing sense of dread.
Don’t listen… focus… you are almost there.
His breath was coming heavily now, manifesting in frost clouds in front of his lips. Cold sweat stung his eyes, blinding him as he desperately tried to blink it away. He didn’t know where he was going, or if he was even going in the right way, all he knew was that he had to get there. He had to do everything possible to survive.
So close, you’re so close. Keep going… Keep…
The guiding voice in his head became muffled, fading out. The boy shook his head frantically willing it to come back, it kept him going, it kept him moving..
Don’t… come back… please…
The sweat down his face was replaced with tears of pain, frustration and abandonment, the manic laughter now filled his head where the calm voice had once reigned. It seeped into his mind, through to his limbs, making each step a laborious event. His will was failing, he was giving up.
His foot caught a rock and he went flying down to the forest floor. Pain ripped through his knees as he hit the ground, his tears flooding across the path where he fell. He had no strength left, nothing to pull him up from the dirt where he laid. The voice had gone with his fight. He didn’t even know where it came from or why it was with him, it didn’t matter now anyway… it was gone, just like everyone else.
This was it. He could feel the presence come over him, feel the cold seeping through him starting at his ankles. It twisted around him, leaving him numb, making it harder to breathe. The cold twisted around his thighs, up his spine, around his chest.
I told you… You are mine… Don’t worry little dragon, I’ll take good care of you.
The dark voice cackled through his head, the irony not mistaken in its words. He didn’t care though, it was over. He had nothing left. It could do what it wanted, have him anyway he wanted. What did it matter, no one would miss him…
Don’t give up… I’m coming for you… I’m coming…
The voice was back, giving him a last moment of warmth, allowing him to push back the darkness slightly to keep that light in his heart. The promise warmed him as he reached out his hand to grasp the air as if he was grasping a hand.
I’m waiting…
It was his last thought before the darkness consumed him, covering him completely.
