Chapter 1

Riven sighed, crossing his arms and glaring at Teddy.

"What's so great about Gryffindor anyway? Or Slytherin? I'd rather just go to school and not worry about stupid houses." He settled into the train compartment Teddy had led him and his twin sister Dahlia to, staring out the window.

The truth was that he was worried that one or the other of his parents would be disappointed if he wound up in the wrong house... Dahlia sat down next to Teddy with a small smile. She would be excited if she got into Gryfindoor with her beloved Teddy. She would be happy for Riven if he got into Slytherin but she had a feeling he would rather be in Gryfindoor just to make their daddy happy. Riven bit his lip, a habit he picked up from his father and grandfather. He resisted the urge to run a hand through his hair, instead settling for fidgeting with his wand. His lips curved into a small smile when his tension caused tiny silvery sparks to fizzle from the end. Dahlia looked at Riven then shook her head.

"So Teddy... what is it like going to Hogwarts?" Riven's eyes darted to his friend's face interestedly.

"Yes, is it as weird as you keep telling us? Do the staircases really move? And are there really ghosts wand'ring about?"

"Ya Mommy said that there are passages leading to anywhere you want to go!" Dahlia was excited about that prospect.

Much like her daddy she had a pension for finding secret doors. Many were scattered through their manor. Riven grinned to himself, remembering his conversation with his father this morning. He'd handed him an old yellowed piece of parchment, teaching him how to unlock the magic within it. He'd touched the map with his new wand, intoning

"I solemnly swear that I am up to no good." with a delighted grin.

Of course, Harry had told him to use it only to look out for his sister, but his father had a familiar glint in his eye when he'd said it. They both shared a thirst for adventure that little seemed to quench. Dahlia giggled and looked at the map. Her mother had told her that their father had this map and so did their grandfather. They could be literal ghosts when ever they needed to. Teddy looked over the map with interest.

"You'd better not get caught with that. Old man Filch would skin you alive and chain you to the walls in his office." Riven chuckles.

"Na dont worry we can hide it well." He puts his wand on the map. "Misgift Managed." He closed it up as Dahlia looked at Teddy completely.

"So what happens when we get to Hogwarts?" Dahlia watched Teddy's pouty lips as he talked.

She was a sucker for a pair of good lips. Teddy's smile turned to a grin and he sat forward dramatically.

"Well, first, you have to take a test!" His grin widened. "A giant takes you up in front of everyone and they put a hat on your head. But not just any hat!" He paused dramatically. "It can read your mind and it digs through your thoughts and desires." He ruffled Riven's hair, pulling a scowl from the boy."So don't think anything too stupid, huh?" Dahlia scoffed and lightly shoved Teddy.

"Teddy dont scare him." Riven's scowl darkend and turned on his sister.

"I'm not scared!" Dahlia glares at him.

"Your trembling." Riven glared at the girl, clenching his fists.

"Yeah, well I'm not the one who *cried* when we got to the train station!" Teddy frowned, ruffling both their hair.

"Calm down. It's not that big a deal." Riven just sneered and turned back to the window, determinedly ignoring the two.

Dahlia glares at Riven.

"At least i didnt want to stay behind just to stay a kid forever!" Dahlia had her father hair trigger temper which made her get up. "Im going to walk around the train." She steps out and slams the door shut.

Teddy and Riven watch her leave, then glance at each other. Teddy grins, causing Riven to blush and look away, blushing. Teddy's grin turned affectionate, but he didn't say anything, letting Riven have his pout. Dahlia walks down the train suddenly wish Mimi was there. She was one of the only girls she could really talk to. When they finally arrived, Riven gasped at the sight of the huge castle. His gasp sputtered when he saw the massive man with a lantern outside, though. He turned to his older friend, his eyes wide as saucers.

"There really *is* a giant!" Teddy smiled and nodded.

"His name's Hagrid. He was around when your dad went to school. Your mum and my dads too, actually." Dahlia walked back into the cart grabbing her purse.

It had a few of her special things.

"Come on." Riven nodded and followed his sister, Teddy leaving them for the moment to catch up to his friends.

Dahlia watches Teddy with a heavy sigh. Hagrid walks over.

"Ah! You must be Lia and Piven!" Dahlia raises an eyebrow.

"It's Dahlia and Riven." Riven took his sister's hand, staring up and up and up at the huge man.

"Er..." he said, unsure what to say. Hagrid chuckles. "Sorry readens never been on of my specials... well come follow me. First years! Come this way!" He starts walking toward the waters edge.

Riven glanced to Dahlia, biting his lip before following obediantly to a small dock festooned with plain dingies. Dahlia slowly climbed into the boat. She looked at the water suddenly feeling the urge to upchuck come to her making her turn green. She found out that a lot of the Black family had sea sickness including her mother. Mostly it was passed in the female line. Riven glanced nervously to his sister as he climbed in behind her, having held the boat steady as she got in.

"You ah...aren't going to get sick are you?" Dahlia gripped the side of the boat.

"As long as i dont look into the water no." She gulps thickly at the lunch they had been fed. "Just get into the boat Riven." Riven nods, settling carefully and reaching into his pocket for a piece of ginger candy. Now he knew why his father had slipped it to him and told him not to eat it. He offered it to Dahlia silently. Dahlia gently took it and nibbled on it. She sighed heavily. "Thanks." Riven shrugged.

"Dad gave it to me. Guess he knew what was going to happen." He gave an embarrasingly loud yelp as the boat suddenly shoved off, the others on the shoreline following without any visible means of propulsion.

Dahlia continues to nibble on the candy. She never wanted anyone to find out that she had sea sickness because it made her seem lame. Esspecially Teddy. They moved without incident across the glass-smooth surface of the lake, coming up beneath the magnificent castle. Slowly, the boats came to a stop, moored against a small underground dock. Riven watched with interest as the giant man lumbered out of a dinghy that was surely too small to have held him. Dahlia got out slowly and sighed heavily. Riven climbed out after his sister, staring at the cavern walls and shivering in the damp cold. He wondered idly if this whole initiation rite was done just to intimidate the new first-years. Dahlia slowly joined the rest of the first years holding her brothers hand.

"Come on lets go before we get left behind." Riven nodded, striding after her. He felt the tension in his chest getting tighter with each step closer to the Sorting Hat. He didn't *want* to be in a house! He wanted *both* of his parents to be proud of him, not bickering about what house he and Dahlia got in. Dahlia holds his hand tight. "Come on just relax." A severe man stood at the top of the stairs where they'd been lead.

His lank black hair was liberally streaked with grey and held in a low ponytail at the nape of his neck. He looked them over and growled.

"I am the Headmaster Snape and this-" He gestured grandly around them- "is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Welcome." he said, though he sounded anything but welcoming.

Riven squeezed his sister's hand. Dahlia bit back a retort about him being Uncle Sevy since he was the headmaster it would be embarressing. Severus lead the first years up before the head table, offing the twins a tiny wink in reassurance. Riven smiled a bit, but otherwise tried to appear controlled. Dahlia smiled before waiting to be sorted. Severus held up a scroll and called up a nervous-looking young boy named Gavin Adair. The headmaster instructed him to sit on a stool placed before the students. Once the boy was seated, Severus dropped a tattered old hat onto the boy's head. It grumbled and pulsed before a huge tear in the side opened wide and yelled out "HUFFLEPUFF!" as the Badger House erupted into enthusiastic applause, Severus moved on, calling all the other students until he finally arrived at

"Potter, Dahlia." Dahlia gulps and steps over and sits up on the stool.

Severus places the had on her head. In her mind, she hears it grumble and mutter to itself.

"Ah, I see. You've much of your father in you, girl. Much of his determination...the drive to prove yourself...You, my dear, are best suited to SLYTHERIN!" The hat declared the last word aloud and the crowd of green and black-clad wizards to the far right of the room erupted into loud cheers and whistles.

Riven took a deep breath and smiled to hi sister. If she were in Slytherin, he would be too. They were twins, after all. Dahlia felt her stomach hit the floor then down underground. Slytherin....? Not Gryfindoor with her Teddy? Tears started to well up in her eyes as she quickly got up and walked quickly over to the Slytherin table. Riven stared at his sister in concern, almost missing the sound of his name. He hurried over to the stool, just wanting the hat to quickly tell him he was in Slytherin so he could comfort his sister...whatever her problem was. The ragged hat chuckled.

"Impatient, I see. Well, let's have a look. Hm...yes...Intense loyalty...strict sense of honour...Hm. Should be fine in GRYFFINDOR!" Riven had risen and dropped the hat, taking two steps toward his sister when what the hat had said registered in his brain.

He froze, turning to it disbelievingly. The red and gold spangled Gryffindor table was cheering loudly, happy to have one of the famous Potter children in their midst. Severus cleared his throat and Riven snapped to himself, blushing and making his way quickly to Teddy's side. The older boy wrapped an arm over his shoulder.

"How's it feel being a member of the best house in Hogwarts, eh Riv?" he aske happily as the young man was pattet heartily on the back and head by his new housemates.

"Er." was all Riven could respond, staring over the suddenly much longer distance across the hall to his twin sister, dread rising in his chest.

Dahlia looked at her twin her eyes looking so lost at the thought of one being away from Teddy and most importantly being away from her twin. They had never been away from each other for a long period of time. She slowly sank into a seat as she knew no one in Slytherin. A tall girl with shining brown hair and icy blue eyes sat down beside Dahlia.

"Hi." She said, her smile open and friendly, revealing a rather unfortunate set of crooked teeth.

"I'm Eunice Finch-Fletchly. I'm in third year. Want me to show you around the school?" Dahlia looks at her and visibly flinched at the sight of her teeth.

Now she knew she got this from her mother but one should take care of themselves.

"Uh... no thanks my brother and my friend will show me around." She tried not to be rude but it couldnt be helped it when Dahlia's eyes drifted to the row of out of place teeth it made her stomach twist.

Eunice frowned.

"But your brother's a Gryffindor." she said, as though it was a disease. "You can't go consorting with the enemy." she told Dahlia sagely, as though teaching an ignorant child.

Dahlia turns and glared at her.

"My father is a Gryfindoor for your information and unless you want you face to look as bad as your teeth i would suggest backing off." Dahlia turned away from her.

Eunice sneered at her before flouncing off. Several nearby Slytherins snickered, having been treated to the silly chit's temper often enough to enjoy when she got some back. A couple second years looked at Dahlia with admiration. Dahlia sighs deeply as she looks at her brother silently yelling for him to come over and change her house so she didnt have to be alone. Suddenly the entire hall goes silent. At first it seems as though everyone is staring at Dahlia, but then Teddy leans onto the table beside her, glaring at all the Slytherins.

"Alright snakes, listen up." he says seriously, drawing mocking hisses from several of the Slytherins and glares from the rest. "This is my favorite girl, you hear me? She's family. You touch her, you're fucking with not only the Potter name and the Black Heiress, but the Head of the Black household, the Scion of the Lupin line as well. We take care of our own." His voice held a note of danger and challenge in it as he glared around the table.

Several Slytherins lifted their chins in defiance, but none spoke, too aware of what those names meant in the wizarding world today. Dahlia looked up at Teddy and felt her heart swell. He always was protective of her and her brother.

"Thanks Teddy." Teddy nods, dropping a kiss on the top of her head before heading back to the Gryffindor table.

Riven smiled brightly at him and Teddy grinned.

"See? She'll be fine." he said in reassurance to his friend.

Dahlia smiles and when the food appears she starts to eat. She enjoyed the food emencely. Exactly one year later, the three of them- along with the rest of Hogwarts- watched Mimi Malfoy step up to be sorted. Like her father before her, the hat barely touched her head before shouting out SLYTHERIN! Teddy and Riven grinned ruefully to each other, having expected nothing else. Dahlia jumpped up and ran to her blonde best friend. She hugged the girl tight.

"Oh Mimi i missed having you here." Mimi hugged Dahlia tight.

"Like wise. Come on lets sit down and you can tell me about all the yummy gossip." As they sat, the Slytherins parted like the red sea for Mimi, one fourth-year even going so far as to offer his 'assistance' should anyone bother the Malfoy heiress.

Across the room, Teddy shook his head with a grin.

"She'll rule this place if we aren't careful, Riv." The younger boy nodded, but couldn't hold back a smile at the image of Uncle Snape jumping to Mimi's snapping fingers.

Mimi looked over to Riven before she sent him a wink. She sat down next to Dahlia who began to tell her every place that was either secret of blocked off. She knew that she and Mimi would become Queens of Slytherin by Christmas. Riven dismissed the girls, turning to Teddy with an excited grin.

"Hey, you want to come flying with me? Dad says if I get on the Quidditch team, he'll buy me a new broom!" Teddy smiled, ruffling Riven's hair affectionately.

"Sorry, Riv. I'm....studying with Acacia Johnson tonight." Riven's eyes widened.

"What? But it's the first day!" Teddy blushed.

"Yes, well. Can't begin to early, now can we?"
