The Affair
Title: The Affair
Pairing(s): Harry/Ginny
Length: 8 x 100
Rating: R
Warning(s): infidelity, character death, angst
Summary: It hurts to know but she never says anything.
She stands frozen in the half-open door, staring at the bed. Her mouth is still opened in the question she never got to ask.
Two bodies. Naked. One on his hands and knees, eyes closed, face twisted in ecstasy. The other one behind, thrusting into his body. Moans with every move. The soft sound of flesh on flesh.
Slow at first, then louder, faster, harder. The bed squeaks. The room smells of sex. Deep groans, shouted names. They fall down together, twisting, kissing.
She takes a deep breath, turns away. Her husband. Her favourite brother.
The door closes behind her.
*
She never mentions it. Never mentions to either of them that she saw them. She wonders if her brother’s wife knows. She never says anything.
She wonders why she’s never realised it before. It’s so obvious.
Her husband’s overtime. Coming home late, exhausted, disappearing into the shower without even kissing her hello. How he never rolls over in bed to touch her anymore. How often he meets with “friends” where she’s not invited. His friends are her friends as well.
She doesn’t know what hurts most; that he’s cheating, that it’s with her brother, or that it’s with a man.
*
It becomes an obsession. When he’s late for dinner or tells her he’s out with his friends, she sits at the kitchen table, eyes closed, and tries to imagine where they are, what they are doing, how they look.
They probably meet in Muggle hotels. No one will know either of them there. Or perhaps in a cottage, somewhere hidden. They might even have bought the place.
They lie on the bed. Naked. One is thrusting into the other. They moan, call each other’s name, lost in passion. The bed squeaks. They fall down together, kissing.
It never stops hurting.
*
Two years after the first time she saw them she finds out by accident.
Teddy’s broken up with Victoire, and he needs a place to stay. She offers Teddy a room in their house. Perhaps her husband will stay when Teddy’s here. But Teddy declines and says he’s found something. She insists on cleaning the place before he moves in. Teddy rolls his eyes but doesn’t stop her.
She’s thorough, and afterwards almost wishes she hadn’t been. She finds them in a drawer in the bedroom: pyjama pants she bought him herself, glasses he said he’d lost.
Now she knows.
*
Now she doesn’t have to try to imagine anymore. Now she can see them, in that apartment, in that bed. Her husband and her brother, on that bed together, kissing, thrusting, moaning. She can almost hear the bed squeak.
She wonders if Teddy knows. If they told him. What he thinks. If they will still meet in the apartment now that Teddy’s living there. Or will they find somewhere else?
It hurts to think that Teddy knows and never told her. Never gave her a hint. Never told Harry to stop.
But then, she’s never told her brother’s wife either.
*
She can’t take it anymore. He hasn’t stopped doing overtime or meeting “friends”. He and her brother still …
She can’t stop thinking about them in that bed.
She can’t stop wondering if Teddy knows. Is it only her or does he avoid her eyes?
When her husband tells her he’ll be out with his friends tonight, she doesn’t wait for him to leave the house. She Apparates to the apartment and hides.
He Apparates a little later. She can see him smile in the dark. He enters the house. And stays inside.
They still meet here. Teddy must know.
*
She’s been following him every time he leaves. Apparates to the house, waits for him to enter, to leave, Apparates home.
The apartment is on the fourth floor. Some nights she stands there, looks up at the windows. Imagines them on the bed. Her insides are like acid.
Tonight it hurts too much. She grabs a broom to fly up, look through the windows. She doesn’t know how it will help, only that it will.
It’s November, and the wind is strong. She’s lost weight.
A gust smashes her against the house. The fall breaks her neck. She’s dead instantly.
*
Her death makes the headlines. Ex-Quidditch player dies falling off broom. It’s declared an accident. The family say she’d been acting nervous for some time. The storm probably scared her and she tried to find her husband, who was visiting his godson.
The funeral is a large, sad affair. Half the wizarding world is there. They are all sorry for her parents, her children, and especially her husband.
He can’t be left alone, so his godson moves in with him. To take care of him.
No one is there to stand in the door and stare while they make love.
END.
