Lying in Wait

It had been years since its last true feed and it was hungry. If it could weep, it certainly would have. The need was so great and overwhelming.

Almost immediately following the fall of Voldemort, there was a sudden influx of souls visiting The Veil. Luna Lovegood had written an account of her wartime experiences. Her interaction with The Veil and its voices featured prominently throughout several chapters.

Luna's mother had been dead for years, but during her brief encounter with The Veil, Luna had a conversation with her mother. It didn't matter to her that said conversation took place inside her own mind.

This revelation allowed The Veil to claim thousands of souls. Those most distraught by the loss of their loved ones came first, and in droves. Molly Weasley was The Veil's greatest accomplishment. Her sorrow was so great, her need to reconnect with her dead sons so overpowering, that she followed their voices through the shimmery curtain, not once realizing that The Veil only whispered blatant lies. She slipped right through the stone archway, never looking back at the husband or other children she would be leaving behind.

Ginevra Potter had given The Veil something it had not had in a millennium, a newly formed yet unborn soul. Ginny had gone to the Death Chamber in an attempt to garner some motherly advice. She had only just learned she was pregnant as she sought out the archway that called to her in her mother's voice.

She placed her hands on either side of the arch and wept as she heard her mother's reassuring words. As she straightened back up, her stomach briefly touched the fluttering curtain and the baby she had been longing for was suddenly swept away in a shroud of lies spoken in her mother's voice.

The Veil was unable to claim that particular soul when Ginny took her own life soon after, but it still celebrated her death in its own sinister way. This was the death it had been waiting for. The Veil knew it wouldn't be long now. He would pay another visit and when he did, Harry Potter's soul would finally join the voices firmly ensconced on the other side.
