A Malfoy Visit to Borgin and Burkes

“Draco,” Lucius sniped at his son, becoming increasingly agitated with every passing moment, “I have told you countless times to keep up. Knockturn Alley is not the place for window shopping.”

Draco sighed as he rushed to close the gap between his father and himself.

Lucius stopped short, nearly causing Draco to run into him. “Mind yourself in this shop, Draco. This store does not encourage hands-on browsing. Understood?”

Draco nodded briskly before they entered Borgin and Burkes.

Mr Borgin looked up from his inventory list and greeted the Malfoys, “Welcome, Mr Malfoy. How may I assist you today?”

Lucius schooled his expression, not wishing to give away his displeasure at what he needed to do. “Mr Borgin,” Lucius began, effectively cutting off Borgin's pitch, “in light of the Ministry's new political agenda, I have some potions that might embarrass my family.”

Borgin raised his brow at Lucius' statement, before he replied, “What sort of potions, Mr Malfoy? Everyone is being affected by the new policies. I'm limited as to what I'm able to buy. You understand, of course?”

Lucius gave Borgin a cold glare then spoke, “If you refuse, you'll have more than the Ministry to worry about .”

Lucius watched the distress wash over Borgin's face. “Naturally, I need to review what you have. I assume you've brought the products with you.”

“Everything is in this case,” Lucius said as he slid the small, dark box across the desk.

Borgin opened the box, extracted his loupe, and began the tedious review of Lucius' offerings.

While Borgin studied the potions, Lucius looked around the shop, narrowing his eyes at Draco, who obviously refused to follow the shop's 'hands off' policy. “Draco!” Lucius snarled menacingly, “do not touch anything.”

“Yes, Father,” Draco said sullenly, feeling thoroughly chastised by his sire.

Borgin was not a Potions Master by any stretch of the imagination, but he had examined enough substances to recognize many potions by sight and smell. Before he retrieved his Dictoquill he inquired, “Were these all brewed by the same master?”

Lucius looked at Borgin, wondering why he would ask such an ignorant question. “Naturally. There's no need to record his name. He's most trustworthy.”

“Of course, Mr Malfoy. I would never ask you to divulge delicate information. I merely asked to reassure my customers.”

“These will not be up for sale. I will retrieve them at a later date.”

Borgin nodded his head and continued his perusal of the vials in the box. He locked the shop doors, switched the closed sign, and activated his Dictoquill before he spoke.

Duco Serum. Commonly referred to a Muggle Bait. Class A Non-Tradeable Substance. Black iridescent with Unctuous Unction base. Most effective on unsuspecting people. It is considered to be liquid Imperio, as the imbiber will do anything the giver requests. It temporarily suppresses a person's free will. Purchase price, fifteen Galleons.”

Borgin looked up at Lucius who was admiring the Vanishing Cabinet and explaining to Draco the advantages of it.

Borgin eased the vial back into the box and removed the next potion. His eyes widened as he recognized the clear substance in his hand.

Verita Reproba, a dark variation of Veritaserum. Class B Non-Tradeable Good. Allegedly used in the States during the Salem Witch Trials. The imbiber isn't forced to tell the truth, but lying is strongly discouraged. It sends incapacitating pain coursing throughout the liar's body. Reports from surviving Muggle-borns subjected to this interrogation have equated it with something called 'Electroshock Therapy.' Repeated use will cause internal organ failure and brain liquefaction. Purchase price, thirty five Galleons.”

Borgin looked for Lucius once more, noticed that he seemed to be displeased with Borgin's progress, and made a casual suggestion, “May I interest you in some newly acquired merchandise? I know you're an associate of Ms Paya's. She brought me some of the most fascinating items, if you would care to take a look.”

Lucius, withholding his temper, gave a blank stare as he replied, “No, thank you. Please continue. I'm expecting a Ministry visit soon, and I do not wish to have any of my valuables broken or unfortunately misplaced because I was not home when they arrived.”

***

Borgin shook his head to clear his mind as he focused on the next potion, which carried the tell tale scent of lovage.

Ego Cruor. Carries Unforgivable classification. Also known as Suicide Solution. Amber colored with traces of silver throughout. A severe depressant. Gives an overwhelming sense of hopelessness and desolation. Substance vanishes once death has occurred. Forces suicide to be carried out only through non magical means. Given its inherent dark nature and the risk associated with its possession, purchase price, eight Galleons.”

“What?” Lucius queried, shocked that Borgin dared to give him practically nothing for that expensive potion.

***

“You must understand my position, Mr Malfoy. I can't sell this. Hell, I shouldn't even have it in my shop. If the Ministry finds out that I have this, regardless of its sale status, I will be put out of business...permanently. Many people would be negatively impacted if that unfortunately occurred. You may have it back, whenever you need it. No charge. I just cannot risk giving you the amount it is worth, alerting the Ministry to the transaction.”

Lucius sighed resignedly. “There is another potion, if you would review it some time today, I would be most appreciative.”

***

Placing the Ego Cruor back in the box, Borgin pulled out the last vial. He immediately noticed the swirls of smoke throughout the dark green liquid. “No,” Borgin told Lucius emphatically. “Absolutely not!” Borgin was shocked that Lucius would dare to carry such a thing on his person long enough to bring it to the shop.

“What is the problem now?” Lucius asked, clearly disinterested in anything the shopkeeper might say.

“You must get rid of this some other way. I am appalled that you would even carry this with you. If the vial had somehow broken, it would have...”

***

Lucius interrupted, knowing exactly what might have occurred. “Enough! I'm well aware of the implications. Circumstances being what they are have made this potion an unfortunate necessity. If the Ministry pushes its current policies, it may be the only remaining choice for maintaining the status quo. I expect you to understand the dangers associated with things not of our world. It can lead to the horrific downfall of our culture as we know it. Are we finished here?”

“Yes. Outsiders will ultimately destroy life as we know it.”

After settling their business, Lucius and Draco departed, leaving Borgin visibly shaken.
