A Past History, A Present Future

After being sorted into Gryffindor, I heard whispering. Not about me, thankfully, but about a boy who had been sorted shortly before me. Black. The first person in Black family history to be sorted into Gryffindor and not Slytherin. It was easy to tell who he was in the table of proud people. He sat quite alone, nervously fiddling with the hem of his school robe. I had no pride to swallow back, given my own secret. I sat next to the pale boy and shook his hand. Soon two other boys joined us, introducing themselves as a handsome, charismatic James Potter and a rather ugly snivelly boy named Peter. We weren’t sure what to think of Sirius, but he didn’t know what to think of us either. None the less, we found each other and kept in company as “outcasts” of the first years, with our enigmatic leader James, Slytherin-should-be- Sirius, pitiful Peter and shabby Remus.

In our first week of classes as first years, we were separated for the first time on a Thursday. Our first day of Potions. We were a bit shocked to have split up and put with people of the opposite house not only for the first lesson, but for the next few years. I suppose Slughorn just had a slightly clearer view of Inter-House Unity than other teachers that allowed us to stick together.

I was put with a pale boy with hair that seemed to be slicked with grease, not from being dirty or unkempt, but from the steam of boiling cauldrons, frothing with magic. He quietly ordered me around our station, and it seemed quite obvious to me that he a) knew what he was doing and b) he was my only hope of passing this class. The potions we were assigned seemed impossibly difficult for me to understand the purpose or reason behind, and the ingredients made no sense, as to how wormwood needed to be sliced just so, and the cauldron to be stirred in an exact way. I could locate, identify and prepare ingredients, but my lab partner, Severus, knew exactly how to put them together.

Our situation of being partnered together wasn’t perfect, as James quickly built a reputation for himself as a bit a charmer to all houses, but bully to Slytherin. Sirius, still a bit puzzled but obviously pleased of his placement in Gryffindor stood right at James’ shoulder, cheering him as he cleverly punished and ridiculed those he deemed as no good. I tried my best to avoid such antics but as Peter also jumped into the fun, I found myself strangely drawn to the charismatic James and his unusual social skills.

Severus soon became a victim, and I did nothing to stop it. I wouldn’t talk to him about it during class, and neither would he. I never actually included myself in the actual taunting; rather I stood in the background and watched. I think he knew, but I could still feel our tension building each day that went past, and that tension grew well into our third year, where it all broke down.

Based on Reviews, I may or may not continue. This is as far as I have written and I have a very clear idea where I'd like to go with this.

Thanks for your time on reading this and hopefully review. <3
