Admiring Beauty

AN: Hi everyone. This is just a short drabble I wrote so the plot bunny would leave me alone. Don't worry, I haven't abandoned AV or HtH but I needed something a little different. It might or might not turn into a drabble series, depends on if I am inspired again. Please tell me what you think!

IMPORTANT BACKGROUND: Light was sent to Whammy's when he was six after his family died in a car crash. Whammy's takes in both magical and muggle genius children and raise them together. Light is half blooded, Lawliet is full blooded, Matt is a squib, Mello is muggle born and Near is full blooded. Watari/Quillish takes up temporary job as professor for DADA. Lawliet and Light are both 18 and in 7th year while the trio are in fourth. Light and Mello are in Slytherin, Lawliet and Near are in Gryffindor, and Matt is in Hufflepuff.

Admiring Beauty

Contrary to popular belief, Lawliet admired beauty in almost all of it's forms. Though he had long ago come to terms with his own unique appearance - that by most could never be considered appealing - that didn't mean that he couldn't acknowledge it in others. Despite this appreciation, however, he had seen few who possessed hansom enough features that caused him to look twice. A brief thought passing through his mind that whoever it was had an attractive face or interesting eyes might surface but that was the extent of the time he spent focused on it. He admired beauty but that did not mean that he held it in high importance, at least not as important as intelligence or wit. He did not believe that a pretty face negated the need for knowledge, regardless of what models or actors might say on the subject. No, Lawliet admired beauty but without intelligence it was only just that...a pretty face. And he never became obsessed by it or so enamored that he became distracted, the mere concept seemed absurd and irrational.

That was until he met Light.

Yagami Light was on a whole different standard than the rest of the world. Hell he WAS his own standard. Silky copper tinted hair and eyes the color of heated honey set in an elegant Asian face that was both youthful and at the same time elegant. A body that was tall enough to be attractive but not so much that it was distracting while being lean and toned without overly muscular. A captivating smile that could shift from playful to teasing to seduction within a span of an instant and a smooth, velvety voice that could send shivers down the spine of anyone who heard it with it's melodious cadence. Light was - pardon the horrible pun - radiant. More importantly then that, however....Light was brilliant - yet again another pun - and not just mildly bright like the professors or even moderately so as say Dumbledore or Rowena Ravenclaw. No, Light was a genius on par with himself which had been something he had never thought he would find. Even at the age of seven he had been accepting of the fact that he would most likely never know another that could converse with him on his own level. But then came the little six year led hand-in-hand by Watari, large golden honey eyes that gleamed with more intelligence and loss than should ever be in one so young and Lawliet knew that regardless of his lack of belief in fate...they were meant to be together.

And ever since that day they had been.

Lawliet found in Light an equal, a rival, an enemy, and later a lover - the missing part of his soul that he hadn't even known he lacked until that day. They were more whole together than they could ever be apart and Lawliet had come to revere the near flawlessness that was his partner. Of course he would never say that out loud for risk of giving Light an even larger ego than he already had but the sentiment was still there and he suspected that the Asian knew it as well. As long as it was just speculation Lawliet didn't mind Light believing whatever he wanted to.

That didn't mean, however, that he didn't find a sadistic pleasure in tormenting his little light and watching those oh so perfect feathers ruffle indignantly. He did. Oh how he did. He almost counted 'Light baiting' as right up there on his list of favorite things, right under strawberry marble cheesecake and frosted animal crackers. That HAD been what he had planned on doing when he had gone in search of the now labeled Slytherin. After sitting through another long afternoon of listening to his fellow Gryffindors griping and complaining about the snakes of the school - most of which Lawliet suspected held secret attractions to them - the dark haired genii couldn't handle the inferior maturity and intelligence any longer and fled in search of his own bright snake. After confirming that Light wasn't in his room or visiting with any of the professors - they tended to like calling the boy in to talk about his future despite the fact that Light knew more about what he wanted to become than they possibly could - he headed straight for the library. Lawliet knew that it was too hot outside for Light to find it comfortable so he wouldn't be studying there and there was no where else in this odd castle that he would go. Besides, if there was any place Light felt comfortable it was in a library, surrounded by peace and knowledge and away from the majority of the outside world.

It hadn't taken long to trek to the library and he hadn't even bothered to look around the main tables or chairs. Light wouldn't be out in the open like that. When he read he was seeking solitude. Heading up to the third level of the library he started glancing around the smaller rooms set up for private studying. Towards the far back he finally found a soft glowing room of candles with a fireplace. Forgoing his usual proper manners and posture, Lawliet found Light curled up in a large, over stuffed chair. And for a moment he couldn't breathe. He had never seen anything so ethereal and captivating as the soft golden glow of the flames flickering across the warm, smooth skin and causing his eyes to resonate with colors that existed outside of the natural spectrum. Colors that seemed to occur for Light alone. For no other reason than to magnify the entrancing vision that he made doing something even as mundane as reading. The normal, carefully crafted mask and controlled emotions were gone and all was left was Light. HIS Light that only he was allowed to see, eyes gleaming over the pages as he drank in the written words captivated with their meanings. Free of all that the world expected them to be, what he expected himself to be. Just what he was.

Soundlessly Lawliet padded over to the chair. If Light was surprised when his dark haired lover nudged his legs gently with his arm he didn't show it and he moved accordingly to allow the other room and a moment later the two were curled up together, Light's legs arching over Lawliet's hip and the older's head resting lightly against the other's neck. For a moment neither said anything as Light continued his reading but when he reached the end of the page he gently turned his head to see him better.

"Lawli?" he whispered softly. "Was there something you needed?"

Lawliet just closed his eyes, wrapping his arms around the other's waist and pulling them just a little closer.

"No...I am merely admiring beauty." he whispered, placing a gentle kiss to Light's soft, delicate neck.
