As Draco was arranging the flowers in the ornate crystal vase, he sat smiling, amused with himself about how he and Harry celebrated their anniversary on the vernal equinox. To Draco it made the perfect sense that their anniversary was then, when the day and night stood in balance. This was the day traditionally known as when the powers of light began to overtake the darkness, both of night and evil. That’s how he felt about his relationship with Harry. Harry slowly brushed aside the darkness surrounding Draco and with it he brought the Light.

It seemed like so long ago when he saw Harry again at one of those dreadfully dull Ministry affairs. It was midnight and the celebration was drawing to a close, a few stragglers remained. Draco’s eyes searched out waning groups of people to see if he saw a familiar friendly face. His eyes met a familiar face, but certainly not a friendly one. Begrudgingly, Harry walked over to him and asked if Draco would like to go to the Leaky Cauldron for a nightcap before calling it a night.

The conversation that ensued over a couple of rounds of drinks was not as terrible as either one of them had imagined. In fact, although neither one would have dared said it then, it seemed rather pleasant and a change of pace for both men. After awhile, Tom, the barkeep, mentioned a last call and Harry and Draco agreed to meet again the following Friday.

Eventually, the schoolboy rivalry transitioned into an uneasy friendship, which blossomed into a fiery passionate affair, and neither one was prepared for the final direction their relationship would take. They refused to admit, even to themselves, that this was becoming something more.

As these things happen, it wasn’t until the most bizarre alliance between Ron Weasley and Blaise Zabini, with their amiable good intentions, did the two lovers understand that their feelings for each other were more than just desire and fulfillments of physical passions. When Ron and Blaise had approached Harry and Draco, separately, and tried to coerce them into facing that this relationship could possibly hinder their futures, it was only at that moment when each man realized that the loss of his current lover was more than he could bear. It dawned on each man that he was in love.

The following day was March twenty-first, the vernal equinox, Lady Day, as she was known in some cultures. This is the day when spring overcomes its defeat of the hellish colds of winters depths. So, it is no small wonder that this was a day celebrated for its rebirth and renewal. At sunset, when the two lovers met again, each was more apprehensive than usual. But as usual, Harry was the braver and more open of the two. He felt that he could not hold in his newfound feelings any longer. As he took Draco in his arms, he declared his love and hoped to one day earn a chance to win the other’s heart. He soon found that what he hoped for he already had. When their lips met, their kiss held a promise for a new beginning.
