Chapter One - The Meeting
Azkaban is a cold and dark place. The thick walls did nothing to keep in the screams of suffering. There is no happiness in these walls. No compassion, no mercy there is just fear. Unhappiness and pain seeped through the walls as if it were blood oozing from a wound.
You can hear the screams of people as soon as you walk in. The prison is like a dimension of hell as any prison should be. However, this is not a muggle prison.
Azkaban is so horrific that many prisoners after years of being incarcerated they go mad. Many inmates they simply stop eating and eventually die of starvation. They would rather starve to death than live another day in the hell that is Azkaban.
The hooded woman hesitantly stepped in the building fearing she made a mistake. She turned to leave but stopped remembering why she came, holding her head high she walked to the visiting desk.
She is a striking contrast to the prison. She is light in the darkness. Her blue dress is brilliant against the dingy dark walls. Even her cloak although black seemed bright against the prison walls.
She walked to the desk nervously. She rang a bell that sat on the counter, her heart hammered as she gazed around. She breathed in the musky smell of Azkaban. The odor that filled the prison is disgusting. The smell could only be described as a mix of body odor and rotting flesh. The wicked stench that filled her nose is repugnant.
"Can I help you?” a man with crooked teeth said.
“I am here to see Draco Malfoy please,” the woman said in a shaky voice.
"Ah yes him,” he chuckled, “Malfoy how the mighty has fallen he still screams he is innocent of killing Dumbledore but we all know that’s a trick isn’t,” the man laughed maniacally.
She nodded "Yes I know."
The man grabbed a phone barking, "Visitor for Malfoy, Draco prisoner number 599," he hung up the phone.
Writing on a slip of paper, he leered at the woman as he held out the pass to her.
"Why ever would a pretty little thing like you want to meet a nasty thing like Draco Malfoy?" he squeaked his teeth.
The girl with honey brown eyes responded with determination.
“I want the truth,” she grabbed the pass he gave her and walked in.
0000000000
Being dragged down a corridor his legs could barely hold him he was so weak. The sound of chains clanged while he tried to keep up. The guards did not care that he is having difficulty they dragged him on.
Draco looked at the guards in fear hoping that he would not anger the guards any further. Although the alternative is not pleasant, he would have them usher him to the visiting room any day. He shivered at the thought of seeing the Dementors of Azkaban.
A guard jabbed him with his baton. The look on the guards face reflected his annoyance.
"Hurry the bloody hell up! Keep up 599!" he snarled.
They did not call the prisoners by names it's always numbers.
Draco tried to keep up but he is failing.
The young man who was once hailed as the Prince of Slytherin did not look like a prince anymore. Gone was his beautiful face. He still is handsome however, no longer beautiful. His sunken features made him look like a peasant and not what he is a pure-blooded aristocrat.
Because of years of starvation, straggly hair, un-shaven face and his tattered clothes made the man who was only twenty-eight look forty.
When he got to the doors, the guards pushed it open.
The guard glared saying in a deadly tone, "You have twenty minutes no more got it!"
In a small voice, Draco said, "Yes."
The guard nodded walking out slamming the door as he left.
Draco entered the room wondering who would want to see him no one wanted to see him other than his few loyal friends. He knew tomorrow that Goyle, Zabini and Crabbe would visit him; He was curious wondering who would want to visit him.
His eyes blinked at the brightness of the light in the visiting room. He squinted to see who stood there.
"Hello?" he said.
He found himself looking at a cloaked figure standing by the window. He could see from her shape even cloaked it is a woman.
The figure turned towards him lifting her delicate hands the woman pushed her hood from her head making her hood fall. Her honey coloured curls falling from under the hood.
He gasped at the brown-eyed girl he had not seen in over seven years.
"Granger?" he asked in shock.
"Hello Malfoy," she smiled
He stared at her with surprise. He could not believe she was here right in front of him.
"Granger what are you---" his words halted by a fit of coughs.
He coughed into his hands trying not to distribute his germs to her.
The woman quickly walked to him placing a handkerchief in his hand. He looked at her with curiosity he thought he would see anger but what he saw shocked him a smile.
"Thank you," he whispered.
She nodded "Why don't you sit Malfoy?"
He nodded sitting into his seat as she slid into the seat before him. Draco rested his chained hands on the table.
Hermione winced at the cut wounds around his wrists that showed the age of the chains he is wearing.
When she first saw him to say she was shocked was an understatement. He did not look like the Malfoy she knew in school. The only way anyone would recognize him would be by his shocking blond hair and grey eyes. However, even his eyes were different. Hollow and full of pain.
She winced at his thin frame he looked like a Holocaust victim from a concentration camp; she had seen pictures in her textbooks in muggle studies when they were studying the wars of the muggle world.
"Have you eaten anything?" she asked.
He chuckled, "Yes I had a piece of bread and a glass of brown water.”
He motioned to the door “would you like me to ask them to bring you some?" he teased.
She snorted at his teasing, “Sorry I forgot.”
He shook his head assuring her it was okay. His eyes stared at her, his eyes clearly showing his wonder at the woman in front of him.
Sensing her unease, he tried to take her mind off her surroundings.
"How are you?" he asked.
She smiled a warm smile that made him flutter. The first warmth he felt in years.
"I’m fine Malfoy I would ask you the same but I know your answer."
He chuckled, "I'm okay besides the torturing, starvation oh and the soon to be impending death I'm fine."
She weakly smiled. She thought he was brave for making a joke at his misery.
"How’s your life Granger?"
“Good, I work for the Ministry of Magic.”
He whistled with a teasing voice he said, “Big time huh?”
She blushed, “Yes I guess I’m doing well travelling all over both worlds.”
"That’s good," he said as he rubbed his sore wrists.
She frowned at his wrists asking, “Can’t they take those off you Malfoy?”
He shook his head leaning in her whispered, “Nah, I’m Dangerous Granger didn’t you know that?”
She lightly laughed at his teasing.
“You were always a little dangerous,” she said in a flirty tone.
Draco smirked at her; he could not believe it she was flirting with him.
He internally shook his head thinking ‘Most likely giving me a little something before I get kissed.’
Draco ran his hands over his dirty face. His grey eyes looking at hers he wanted her to keep talking.
"So how are your two shadows doing?" he asked with a bit of sarcasm.
She giggled, "Harry and Ron are doing fine. Harry is married to Ginny Weasley."
He chuckled.
"They have four kids," she smiled at him.
Draco’s mouth dropped at the thought of Potter having four kids.
"I guess their keeping the Weasley tradition alive huh?"
She smiled at his words "Yup Ron has eight."
He whistled, "Bloody hell they must have been going at it like rabbits."
Hermione laughed and he loved it.
"Yeah every time I would over to see the new baby they'd surprise us with news of a new baby. He's married to Lavender Brown well now Lavender Weasley."
Draco smirked “I thought you’d marry him.”
Hermione made a face "Yuck no he's my friend."
"How about you Granger got any little ones,” he asked wanting her answer to be no.
Hermione shook her head, "No I don't have time to you know date I'm way too busy."
He smiled "You will when you’re ready."
She agreed.
Hermione stared at him with compassion.
She asked, "Are you scared Draco?"
His name coming from her mouth made him shiver.
He decided to tell the truth. He did not have to act manly. Not here not in front of her.
"I’m terrified,” his voice shook as he said it.
He looked at her. She gasped at the fear his eyes conveyed.
Hermione did something he never thought he would ever see anyone do. She reached towards him taking his hand in hers. He looked at it with surprise. However, he smirked when she brightened the room with a smile.
He breathed in asking the question he wanted to know, "Why are you here Granger?"
She looked at him asking him, "I need to know something Malfoy."
He sighed "What?"
"Why’d you do it?" She said with a tremble to her voice.
He looked confused "Do what?"
"Kill Dumbledore," she said in a small voice.
He growled standing slamming his hand down on the table making her jump.
“I told you!” he said pointing at her, “And those fuckers I didn’t do it!” he screamed.
Hermione looked at him with anger "But they have proof."
Draco yelled at her words, "Fuck the proof I know I did not do it!"
He screamed the end of his sentence. Anger radiating off him in waves she could practically feel it.
Hermione looked at him with confusion "But why," she said leaning into him, "The evidence was powerful Malfoy I was there all of it points to you."
He growled, "You have to believe me Granger I don't care about the proof I didn't do it."
"Draco," her voice was soft.
He looked at her with desperation he needed someone to believe him.
With hope in her eyes, she asked him, “Swear to me you didn’t do it.”
He looked at her with pain trying to make her believe him.
"I didn't do it Hermione on my life as a Malfoy I would never kill him. He was helping me to break away from my father before I knew the tru ---"
He stopped he did not want to continue his head dropped knowing she would never believe him.
Hermione looked at him she knew in her heart he was not lying.
"I believe you," she said to him.
His eyes shot up "What?"
"I believe you I'm sorry---"
However, before she could finish the crooked teeth man said, "Times up honey" Draco growled.
"Do not be sorry you believe in me that’s all that matters," he said.
Draco looked at her saying her name, “Hermione” her name on his lips made her shiver.
"Yes," she whispered so the guard would not hear them easily.
"Can I touch you?" he asked in a small voice.
She was surprised at his request “Why?”
"Please," he begged.
She nodded.
He touched her face, "You're warm," he said in awe.
"You're cold," she smiled as he chuckled.
"Draco if---do you know who could have framed you?”
He nodded, "If I was out maybe but I'm not going anywhere."
He lifted his arms showing her his chained hands.
"I’m sorry Draco."
"It’s fine."
"Goodbye Draco," she shocked him once more.
She leaned up kissing him on the cheek.
He smiled at her warm lips.
"Goodbye Hermione," As he was led away he asked her, “Smile for me Hermione.”
She smiled as he was dragged out of sight.
0000000000
Hermione teared as she walked out of Azkaban the blazing in the distance. Hermione rubbed her hands together to keep herself warm the icy water surrounding the prison making the air chilly.
She flinched hearing the screams of prisoners in the distance. She looked at the stone building and cried into her hands. The pain radiating from the prison is excruciating.
Talking to herself she whispered, "They are going to kiss an innocent man.”
Hermione walked to a building by the end of the cliff. She stood in one of the lines as whooshing rang in her ears, green clouds filled the air.
After ten minutes, Hermione stepped up to the floo network.
"I hope you have a pleasant night Miss thank you for visiting Azkaban," a man in a suit smiled at her.
Hermione weakly smiled at him.
The man frowned at her tears "Don't cry Miss I am sure the visit wasn't all bad.
She shook her head wiping her tears. With determination, she walked into the floo screaming the address of her flat.
Hermione stumbled into her flat grabbing a few things she knew that there was only one thing to do.
