The fox looked around before it stole away through the forest. He didn’t hear anyone in pursuit of him, but knew that someone had seen him. He crawled underneath the branches of a bush and hid, trying to quiet his panting breath. His ears twitched as he heard a twig snap, and crawled as far back as he could under the tree so that the hunters would not see him.
The boots of one walked past him and the hunter looked around. “Did you see him? I know he came this way.”
Another pair of boots came into view. The fox looked around frantically, wondering where he could hide if they found him. “He may have come this way, but he isn’t here now,” the haughty voice of the second spoke.
The first man circled back around and faced the man closest the fox. “Where do you think he may be? We are still within the anti-apparition wards. He can’t have just disappeared.”
“This is Harry Potter we are talking about, Nott. Hasn’t he gotten himself out of nearly every spot that ever found him? He must have found a way.”
“The Dark Lord is not going to be happy about this,” Theodore replied. He looked under the bushes near to the hiding place of the fox.
Draco looked at the other boy incredulously. “Do you honestly believe that Potter would hide under a bush?” He shook his head and looked further ahead into the clearing. “I think we need to continue looking before he does make it to the Apparition point.”
Nott nodded and rushed forward through the forest. He began throwing spells at random bushes as he ran along.
Draco laughed to himself as he watched the klutz run off. He bent down next to the bush where the frightened fox was hidden. “Come on out, Harry. He’s gone now.”
The fox looked up into the silver eyes looking at him. “He will be back soon, but he is off looking near the lake now.” Draco put his hands under the branches and pulled out the frightened fox.
The fox tried to back away but couldn’t move any further. Draco pulled him out from under the tree and began to stroke his fur. “As many times as I watched you transform in my bedroom, do you think I wouldn’t know you in the wild?” He nuzzled the scared fox and ran his hands along it’s spine in comforting patterns. He stroked the fur and soothed the frightened animal.
Within minutes he felt arms wrap around his neck and a trail of kisses leading from his ear to his mouth. Their lips met in passionate breath, tongues colliding in their frenzied heat. It was only a moment, but it seemed like forever. They broke the kiss and looked into each other’s eyes.
Draco pulled a stone out of his pocket and pressed it into Harry’s hand. “Take it. It will get you to Hogsmeade. Go to Hog’s Head and talk to the bartender. He can help you.”
Harry’s hand felt warm as he felt the stone tingling. “Draco, I love…”
The sentence wasn’t finished as he felt himself being pulled along to the wizarding town. Draco smiled wryly. He had kept that stone on him since the beginning of the year, praying he would never need to use it. He moved in an opposite direction than the one Nott took and began to look around.
Nott came back into the clearing. “Any sign of him?” he huffed.
Draco’s closed eyes looked back at his friend, “No, I haven’t caught sight of him.”
