Goodbye My Lover

Albus stared at the faded photograph once more. Gellert’s eyes smiled up at him from the warmth of the past. He could scarcely believe that so many years had passed since he had last touched him. He sighed heavily, allowing a rogue tear to escape his twinkling blue eye.


The scraping sound of the heavy wooden chair echoed throughout his hollow chambers. It was much like his heart, so empty, yet so full at the same time. He knew that when they parted ways it would be forever. Hell, he knew they would part ways even before they began, simply because Gellert had been so blinded by their passion.


Yet somehow, though he knew they wouldn’t have made it this far, his heart still ached for what could have been. They could have been so much. Albus had always wanted children, but the desire had left him when Gellert did. He thought back to those cozy nights the two of them had spent, sometimes where he would just watch the sleeping silhouette of his lover.


Albus took a deep breath and angrily wiped away the tears that had begun to spill more freely down his cheeks. He knew what he must do now, and there was no turning back. Severus had pleaded with him, begged even to go in his stead, but no, he knew what must be done. The oath was the greatest tool at their disposal, and even though it meant he would die, it was for the greater good.


Yes the greater good, a cause with which Gellert had been well familiar. He did not know exactly when he would meet his demise, but could not go to his grave without telling him. He could not let his love sink to the depths of eternity and fade away, like a feather on the wind.


Hand shaking, he poised the quill over the parchment and began to write.

He carefully sealed the wax, and tied the letter to Fawkes’ leg.


“Godspeed, old friend,” he said to the scarlet bird before retreating to his chambers one final time.
