Was there anything better then blueberry pancakes for breakfast? Yes, blueberry pancakes for lunch! With that thought in mind Harry devoured yet another bite of the golden-brown pancake. Life was good. And it would have been better if he had been able to enjoy gods gift to man, a.k.a. pancakes, in piece. BUT NO!!! Ron was still talking.

“…so I asked her what her favorite color was, think’n I could pick out something in that shade, you know? And she turns and looked at me like I was bloody stupid…”

Tuning out again Harry wandered into his own thoughts. He liked to think that he had gained patience over the last two years. Granted he hadn’t been the most stable teen in his fourth year, what with all his emotional outburst and hormones. But still, he had been able to stand up against Volemort and stay calm under his taunts. He had kept a level head and without anger blinding his movements he was able to attack and find a weakness. Destroying Volemort once and for all. However his patience was weighing thin. He was swiftly approaching his limit.

He and Ron were the only students in the great Hall finishing their lunch, the majority of the student body already having left for classes. They had a free period so they could afford to take their time. So Harry sat there trying to enjoy his lunch of his favorite breakfast food, while Ron carried on a one-sided conversation with himself. A conversation they had been having for the last four bloody days!

“… I don’t want to go with sweets ‘cause everyone is doing that this year. Also Honeydukes will be packed solid. And I’d rather NOT get into another fight over the last chocolate frog -again…”

Taking a deep breath he repeated the mantra he had established within the last few days ‘it’s not Ron’s fault. Everyone acts nuts this time of year. It’s not his fault. He just can’t live up to the pressure and is slowly cracking. It is not his fault that he’s losing it and bringing you along for the ride…’

“…maybe you have the right of it Harry. Going out with guys. With blokes there’s no pressure. I mean we don’t care a bit about this holiday and the only reason we deal with it is because the fairer sex likes it and if we can keep them happy then maybe we can be happy. But I’m not happy, so I might as well date a gent because then at lest I can be unhappy with someone that wont take my head off for not knowing their favorite flower!”

Harry signed, feeling the anger drain away. “Ron you aren’t gay. You could never be gay; you love Hermione too much to be. Besides you practically had a heart attack when I told you I was. Avoided me for weeks afterward and then throw me at any girl with a large set of breast. ‘Trying to convert me back to the straight an narrow.’ if I’m quoting you right.”

Ron had the decency to blush at the last remark but retaliated with “But you did tell me you didn’t mind girls. Just that you were favoring guys lately… and you shouldn’t tell your best mate that you like gents when he’s trying to drink a pint of butterbeer. Of course it will give him a heart attack!”

Harry shrugged. He hadn’t been planning to tell his friends that day at The Three Broomsticks. It just sort of happened. First he was eyeing the new part-time waiter then the next thing he knew he was in a debate of what was a more attractive figure. That lead to telling Hermione he preferred a chiseled chest to ample breast and that lead to the explanation of the lack of breasts on said chest, which ended with Ron getting the Heimlich from the part-timer. They left that night with a very understanding Hermione, a shell-shocked and disgruntled Ron and a very satisfied Harry, who had a date the fallowing weekend with a certain part-timer.

“Ron, I do like girls you know that. I dated Cho my Fourth year didn’t I? I just find myself more interested in men lately. ”

Ron Snorted. “Yes, well you haven’t really given any girls a chance since Chang now have you? Infect I don’t think you’ve actually dated a guy more then a few times. This is our sixth year Harry! You killed You-Know-Who so why don’t you relax and find someone? Valentines Day is next Friday you know.”

Harry shook his head. “ I just haven’t been interested in anyone. And before you say anything I refuse to date any of those Boy-Who-Lived groupies. As to Valentines Day, you know how I feel about it.”

Besides the question of what to get Hermione for their first official Valentines Day as a couple, Harry’s view on Valentines Day was a reoccurring topic that kept popping up. Valentines Day was a wonderful idea but people no longer looked at what it was really about. It was a day to show a lover and friend how special they were to you, but where was the good in it when people couldn’t go the extra mile for that person. Why bother getting something for someone to make them feel special if you were only going to get them the same thing that everyone else was getting. As wonderful as a box of chocolates were, when everyone around you is getting a box all it really said was ‘I couldn’t think of anything better.’

“I like Valentines Day, Ron. I really do, I just don’t like the cookie cutter version everyone falls into. If your going to do it do it right- show the person you like how you really feel, just don’t do it the same way everyone else is. Everyone falls in love differently so why do the same route as all the others? You like that person for hundreds of different reason so make is special. Or at lest show them that you know them well enough to get them something they’d like. Just think outside the box. Just don’t make it ordinary.”

Ron rolled his eyes. He had heard this speech before. Almost as much as Harry had heard him whine about what to get Hermione. “That’s all well an good for a Ravenclaw mate, but incase you haven’t gotten to know me over the last six years I’ll just tell you: I tend to act now and think later.”

“And that would be the reason Hermione is currently giving you the cold shoulder.”
Ron Frowned. “Look Ron just think about it like a Gryffindor. Your doing something that many people aren’t brave enough to do.’ When that didn’t get a positive response, Harry went in with the deal breaker. ‘Besides you have a week and a half, today’s only Tuesday and Valentines day isn’t till next Friday.” That had the red head smiling and he had a spring in his step as he vacated the table.

“Lets go. Don’t want to be late for Charms.”

Rising to fallow his fellow Gryffindor, Harry had only taken three steps when he heard the unmistakable sound of an owl. Looking up he was able to see a petite screech owl circling the great halls ceiling. When it noticed it had Harry’s attention it dove low to drop the package and took off. Retracting his eyes from the retreating owl Harry looked at the package in his outstretched hands.

It was small and wrapped in brown paper. Nothing unusual about that. What was weird was that the owl had waited till the end of lunch to deliver it. When it was only himself and Ron. Checking to see he looked around the Great Hall. The only other movement came from a broom in the far corner, no doubt under a spell to clean by a house elf. Turning back to the package Harry examined it. It was wrapped hastily like the sender was in a rush. A string wrapped around the top keeping it closed and a small folded note sat tucked between the brown paper and the string.

Curiosity getting the better of him, Harry skipped the note and went right for the string on the package. Opening it Harry was stunned to see a soft red rose bud. But it wasn’t any old rose bud this one was made out of paper. The delicate edges carefully crafted to look like individual pedals, the thick, enchanted green stem elegantly shaped to look like it was freshly cut from the garden. Taking the rose form its coffee colored wrappings, Harry ran a finger over a thorn only pulling back when he felt the sharp point prick his finger.

“Wow.” Said Ron looking over Harry’s shoulder. And he had to agree. The rose was stunning.

That one word must have been a key for its transformation because seconds after the words past Ron’s lips the rose bloomed. The petals folded back to reveal more petals until it had flourished into a fully matured rose. The once light red petals had transformed into a dark crimson, the edges lined with a slim line of white that vanished all together at the center of the rose. On the pedals sat small beads of water, enchanted to look like freshly fallen dew.

“I wonder who made it.” He found himself asked out loud.

“Check the card.”

Taking Ron’s advice Harry gently place the rose upon a table and removed the card from the packaging. Opening it Harry was disappointed to see only to lines. Then he read it:
Hope this doesn’t count as ‘ordinary.’
-Your Origami Valentine

His breath hitched. Someone had heard him talking to Ron. The only question was who. He had voiced his opinion countless times in the last few days and not always privately. Ron laughed; “Looks like you have at least one person that shares your view about keeping Valentine’s Day special.”

Looking up from the note Harry was in time to see a meaningful wiggle of red eyebrows. Rolling his eyes Harry thoughtfully looked at the note, then the red rose. This person was unique. He or she had thought outside the box. They hadn’t given him boxes of chocolate frogs or Fizzing Whizbees, like the other people that where smitten with him would. Nor did they try to force a love potion down his throat, like some girls did when he came out and admitted he liked boys last year. Also they obviously know about his curious nature. Why else would they remain ¬-?

He felt a smile crawl across his face. They hadn’t even waited till the day of St. Valentine to make a move. That alone was different. Swinging his book bag over his shoulder, and swiftly picking up the enchanted flower Harry murmured a quick spell, pinning the rose to the front of his robe. Then presided to stride to the exist. As an after thought he glanced over his shoulder. Ron still stood where he had left him with one eyebrow raised in question and a smirk on his lips. Harry gave him a smirk of his own and gave him the answer to his unanswered question.

“Maybe I have Ron. Maybe I have Ron.”
