I've had my moments
I was coming to the end of a long long walk
Draco walked along the chilly streets of muggle London. A single tear slid down his cheek as he thought of his now ex-wife. After all the years of condemning muggle born witches and wizards it seemed ironic he had fallen in love with one, and it only seemed fitting he would end his life in a muggle way. He could see the bridge in front of him. Maybe this would help him atone for all the things he had done in his life.
When a man crawled out of a cardboard box
Under the E. Street Bridge
Followed me on to it
A scrawny old man crawled out of a cardboard box as he approached. Draco felt sorrow, how many people were now homeless because of his father. How many people were alone out on the cold streets. This old man looked familiar but Draco couldn’t place him.
Harry saw Draco approaching the bridge he now lived under. The years had not been kind to Harry. He couldn’t take it after his wife and children had been killed by Dolores Umbridge, she had gotten off on all charges saying she had been under the imperious curse. Harry had been at work at the time. After that had happened he had given every cent and all his possessions to the charities for those who had lost loved ones to the war, after giving the Weasley’s a sizable anonymous donation of course. He watched Draco walk onto the bridge and he found himself curious about something for the first time in years. So he followed him.
I went out halfway across
With that homeless shadow tagging along
So I dug for some change
Wouldn't need it anyway
Draco walked out to the center of the bridge. As he turned to look at the freezing cold water below him, the homless man was standing beside him staring out at the water. When Draco heard the man’s stomach grumble he stuffed his hand in his pocket and pulled out a handful of change and a few bills. It would be his last good deed and to be perfectly honest money meant nothing to him now, it hadn’t since the divorce papers came.
He took it lookin' just a bit ashamed
He said, You know, I haven't always been this way
Harry took the money, ashamed of what had become of him. He hadn’t had a bit of food in three days and he knew this was no moment for pride. There had to be something he could say, some way to help his childhood rival. If nothing else Harry was sure Draco didn’t recognize him. He took a deep breath and dedicated himself to what he was about to do. He opened his mouth to speak.
I've had my moments, days in the sun
Moments I was second to none
Moments when I knew I did what I thought I couldn't do
Like that plane ride coming home from the war
That summer my son was born
Harry spoke to Draco. He told the man that looked so much younger than him now about coming home from a war that he thought he would never survive though he used the word plane instead of broom in his story. He didn’t want Draco to know he was a wizard. He spoke of seeing the birth of his first son and all the emotions he felt then. He never gave the name of his wife but spoke of how her love was another memory along with their children that shone brighter than the sun.
And memories like a coat so warm
A cold wind can't get through
Lookin' at me now you might not know it
But I've had my moments
Harry continued, Telling Draco of how these warm memories kept him going through the cold winter nights when he really should have frozen to death. He looked down at his own pathetic appearance then looked up at Draco and spoke the words the blonde would never forget. “looking at me now you might not know it, but I’ve had my moments.”
I stood there tryin' to find my nerve
Wondering if a single soul on Earth
Would care at all
Miss me when I'm gone
Draco could relate with what the old man was saying. It seemed they had both lost everything important to them. The only difference was this old man had lost his so suddenly that he still had the good memories but Draco’s marriage had turned sour and all the good was being replaced with bad by the same woman. He thought back trying to think of a single person that would shed a tear over his death. His ex-wife would probably laugh when she found out. His son was too young to understand and he wouldn’t remember Draco. His father and godfather were dead and his mother was insane. What a pathetic life, leaving no one behind to miss you.
That old man just kept hanging around
Lookin' at me, lookin' down
I think he recognized
That look in my eyes
Standing with him there I felt ashamed
I said, You know, I haven't always felt this way
Draco looked at the old man. He knew that old man could see what he was thinking. Those green eyes staring at him felt like they could see his soul. He felt pathetic compared to this man. The old man had moved on with his life after losing everything and here he was about to end his. He took a deep breath and told the man about his life.
I've had my moments, days in the sun
Moments I was second to none
Moments when I knew I did what I thought I couldn't do
Like the day I walked away from the wine
For a woman who became my wife
And a love that, when it was right,
Could always see me through
Lookin' at me now you might not know it
But I've had my moments
It was then that Draco realized even in his worst moments he hadn’t fallen back to the habit that had almost destroyed him. He also remembered the one woman who had helped him through it all. Even if he never found love again he would always have Pansy there to help him through. He looked up at the smiling green eyes and said two simple words forbidden to come from a Malfoy’s mouth, “Thank you.” At that moment the man in front of him pushed his matted hair behind his ear revealing a very familiar scar and disappeared with a pop. Draco smiled, “It seems you have won again Potter, and for once I am very thankful for that.”
I know somewhere 'round a trashcan fire tonight
That old man tells his story one more time
He says
I've had my moments, days in the sun
Moments I was second to none
Moments when I knew I did what I thought I couldn't do
Like that cool night on the E. Street Bridge
When a young man almost ended it
I was right there, wasn't scared a bit
And I helped to pull him through
Lookin' at me now you might not know it
Oh, lookin' at me now you might not know it
But I've had my moments
The next day found Harry sharing food he had bought with the money Draco had handed him with a few other homeless men around a trashcan fire. He told them the story of the previous nights event s over the first good meal the men had in about a year. Here Harry was at his absolute lowest, without even realizing it inspiring hope in others.
