Chapter One - Letting Him Down

"I don't understand." Ron Weasley said. He was sitting in the chair closest to the fire in Hermione Granger's Head Girl common room. Hermione sat on the sofa next to his chair. He was staring at her incredulously. Hermione studied his facial expression and sighed. His red hair stuck up like it always did but even more so at the moment due to his habit of running his hands through it during serious conversations, as though massaging his brain into working.

"Well, what did you think was going to happen, Ron?" she asked finally. She had just finished telling Ron about her plan to apprentice under Professor Snape so that she could achieve her Master in Potions and hopefully teach in one of the prominent wizarding schools. It had surprised her when, instead of being happy for her, Ron had protested. He, it seemed, had made other plans for his, and her, future.

"I just figured we would get married after graduation and we would have kids. Then I could get a job with dad at the ministry and you could stay home like..." He trailed off just a little too late.

"Like who?" Hermione's voice was rising and she was near the point of losing control. "Your mom?"

"Yeah." Ron said matter-of-factly. Hermione gaped at him in complete surprise. He was cute but, admittedly, not the type she would have chosen for herself and when she came right down to it they had very little in common. She was constantly preparing for the future and had been planning for this job since her third year whereas he didn't know what he was having for lunch, much less what he wanted out of life, yet here he was planning hers out for her. Well, she was not going to stand for it. As much as she loved Mrs. Weasley, she could definitely not see herself cooking and cleaning up after a houseful of children anytime soon, if ever.

"If you honestly believe that I could be happy just sitting at home for the rest of my life you are completely dense!" She had crossed the line now and could no longer control her anger. She was very nearly shouting. "There is so much that I want to do and see. Being shackled to a husband and children this early in life just isn't enough for me."

"Well apparently neither am I." Ron spat poisonously and he stood up to leave.

"Ron, wait!" Hermione jumped up and ran to him. "I didn't mean it like that." She honestly had not meant to hurt him. He was after all one of her best friends. She had intended to break it off with him before graduation, but not like this. But he stepped back from her. He glared at her as he spoke, his hands clenched into fists at his sides.

"Forget it Hermione! I wouldn't want someone as bloody brilliant as you to be SHACKLED to someone as DENSE as me!" and with that he spun around and stormed across the room and out the portrait hole, leaving her staring after him, alone and completely flabbergasted.

'Well so much for letting him down easily.'
