It Happened One Night
Welcome all to my latest fic. I said I would revisit Hermione and Remus and so here we are! Let me say before you read, so there are no doubts, that my stories are very much alternate understandings and yes, the players will be OOC, sometimes extremely so. If you are a stickler for cannon, please, my fics are not going to be enjoyable for you. Otherwise, read on my friends!
CHAPTER 1: The Wedding
Hermione didn’t think she could take another moment of watching happy couples dancing in the candlelit garden. She was so happy for Harry and Ginny, they had finally gotten married after almost six years together, but she just couldn’t handle all of the gushy romance in the atmosphere.
She spotted Ron from across the garden, chatting up yet another of his adoring female fans. “Prick.” She muttered as she snatched yet another flute of champagne from the waiter making rounds. She was tipsy already and well on her way to completely pissed but she didn’t care. She staggered slightly, the heels of her shoes sinking into the ground before she finally stepped out of them and tossed them in the general direction of her table.
The little blonde talking to Ron threw back her head and laughed hysterically. Hermione snorted in disgust. Ron was a lot of things, but clever enough to tell a story or a joke that funny wasn’t likely. She still couldn’t believe the cheating sod had thrown away five years for an easy shag. She tossed back the remaining champagne in her glass and reached for another.
“Do you think she’s going to be alright Harry?” Ginny asked her new husband. Harry watched Hermione remove her shoes and throw them across the garden.
“I don’t know, Gin. I could kill your brother for doing this to her.” Harry sighed and watched her practically fall into one of the folding chairs. He was worried about Hermione, she hadn’t been herself in months, not since Ron announced that he just couldn’t be tied down, it was bad for his image. Playing professional Quidditch had gone to his head along with the notoriety that came with being one of the Golden Trio. Now he had the nerve to flirt shamelessly in front of her after breaking her heart.
“You’ll have to wait in line, baby. I want first crack at the sod, and I know for a fact mom already has plans to tear into him.” Ginny said. “Its getting close to the end of the night Harry, we can’t let her go home like that.”
“Hang tight, love. Let me go find Remus, Ill have him see her home.” Harry kissed her cheek and made his way across the garden to the shadows where he knew he would find Remus sitting alone as usual sipping his tea. “Moony! How’s it going?” Harry asked as he settled into the chair beside Remus.
“It’s going. It was a wonderful wedding Harry, I am very happy for you.” Remus said sincerely. Though deep inside he was green with envy. How he wished he could have such happiness, a woman who could look beyond the lycanthropy and just love him.
“Thank you, Moony. I was hoping you could do me a favor.” Harry winced slightly, feeling sort of bad about begging favors from Remus.
“As long as it’s legal.” Remus laughed softly. Harry rarely asked anything of him, the last favor had been to be a part of the wedding party.
“Do you see Hermione over there?” Harry asked, pointing her out. She was sitting in the chair, her legs crossed and leaning over to rub the sole of her foot.
“Yes, what about her?” Remus asked. He had been observing her off and on all night. She had certainly grown into herself. She was petite and curvy with long dark curls that danced around her hips when she walked. The copper colored bridesmaid dress set of her whiskey colored eyes to perfection, even if they looked rather haunted and sad.
“She’s not having a good time of it here lately and it’s almost time for us to leave. I was hoping you would see to it that she gets home safely. She has a small house near Hogsmeade, not too far from where you live actually.” Harry said, watching as Hermione fixed a cup of coffee and nibbled at a piece of cake.
“Isn’t she going home with Ronald?” Remus asked, tugging once more on the tie around his neck.
“You haven’t heard? Ron left her.” Harry said softly.
“Why on earth would he do that? Hermione is the best thing that could ever happen to him!” Remus couldn’t believe any man would let a woman as lovely and clever as Hermione get away from him.
“Apparently he was more interested in shagging Quidditch groupies than being with a woman who adored him.” Harry shook his head. “Bloody idiot. She’s been pretty down for the last six months since it happened. She’s had a bit to drink and I can see she’s sad. She’s only danced with me and that isn’t pleasant for any woman. Would you take her home Remus? I can’t go on my honeymoon unless I know Mione is alright.”
“Of course, Harry. I’m sorry she is having such a terrible time, Hermione deserves better.” Remus said, watching her. Harry noticed an odd flicker of what strangely looked like interest flash over Remus’s face.
“I’d appreciate it. Maybe you could dance with her once before you go, you know, make her feel a little better.” Harry said.
“I’m not much of a dancer, Harry.” Remus said.
“Doesn’t matter, it’s a slow song, last song of the night. Just ask her to dance and then take her home.” Harry stood and laid his hand on Remus’s shoulder. “I appreciate it Moony, I adore her and her safety and happiness means everything to me.” Harry squeezed gently and walked away towards his wife.
“All set?” Ginny asked, wrapping her arms around his waist.
“Yeah, he’s going to take her home, they don’t live far from one another. He’s going to ask her to dance.” Harry said smiling as Remus stood and strolled over to where Hermione was sitting.
“Harry James Potter are you playing matchmaker?” Ginny asked, her eyes wide.
“No, of course not.” He said, but he couldn’t stop the smile that lifted his lips. “Hermione and Remus would never fall for it anyhow.”
