A New Family For Harry
Author's Note: This "preface" chapter is quite short -- the installments that follow are all longer. I hope you enjoy -- please review!

When Lucius Malfoy answered the Floo call that evening, he raised an eyebrow as the head of Cornelius Fudge appeared.
"Minister," he drawled. "To what do I owe this honor?"
"We're in a bit of a fix, Lucius," Fudge said, sparing no time for pleasantries. "Dumbledore said he had the best place for the boy, but it's turned out badly, and really, there was nothing we could do but step in. And it has to be with one of our best families, you understand, so naturally I thought of you first."
Lucius unconsciously tightened his hands around the arms of his chair. "If you would be so good as to clarify what you are speaking about, I would be most grateful."
"What? Oh." Fudge shook his head, as if remembering that Lucius needed to be informed of the situation. "The Potter boy. His relatives were discovered to be neglecting and abusing him. I'm overruling Dumbledore's choice to place him there, and I'd like to have him live with one of our families."
Lucius straighted. "And you were thinking..."
Fudge mopped at his head with a kerchief. "I know it would be an immense imposition on you and your wife, Lucius, but with your status and background, I just thought --"
"I accept," Lucius purred. "When do we get the boy?"
"In the morning," Fudge said with evident relief. "I can't tell you enough what a service you'll be performing to the entire wizarding community by taking Harry Potter into your home, Lucius. Everyone will be indebted to you."
With a small smile, Lucius tilted his head to the side and said, "Imagine that."
