Draco stared at the clock on the wall that currently showed three o’clock. He sighed as he closed his eyes and turned over to stare at his raven-haired lover. He was sleeping soundly on his stomach, his dark locks brushing his temple as he breathed in and out. His usual sparkling emerald eyes closed as he dreamt. Draco sighed again as he brushed his hand through his lover’s silky hair.


He hoped she wouldn’t call tonight. His lover had told her that he would probably not be making it home from work, thus earning a night in Draco’s bed. Draco moaned quietly as he heard his lover’s phone ring. Said lover woke up sleepily and grabbed for his phone, which was in his pants pocket on the floor. He answered in a sleepy voice. Draco could not hear the other side of the conversation but knew that his lover had been caught by the look on his face. His lover began to yell into the phone. Draco turned away. He would leave again. He would leave to make up with his wife. He would leave Draco alone again, with his false promises and lies of love. Draco wondered if his lover ever thought of him when him and his wife were together. He needed to know.

Draco’s eyes teared as he begged his lover to stay with him. If his wife had already known then he could stay right? His lover smiled sadly at him and he sighed. But, it wasn’t that simple. He left as Draco slumped down to the floor in defeat. Who knew when his lover would come see him again? Every time felt like a million year until the next one, making his heart break. Why couldn’t he see how much he loved him? How Draco would do anything for him… even share him just to be with him. He needed to know.

Draco smiled at his emerald eyed lover as he watched him unwrap his gift. His lover gasped as he fingered a beautiful silver chain with the initials HD on it. He smiled as he placed it back in the box and handed Draco his. Draco smiled as he stared at the beautiful emerald ring his lover had bought for him, engraved with Draco’s initials and everything. He immediately put it on. Draco forced a smile as he watched his lover place his gift back in the box and put it away. He cried inside as he knew that his lover would never wear it. Did his lover not love him at all? He needed to know.

Draco cried, down on his knees, as he stared at his lover’s retreating figure. Once again he was leaving him. Leaving him for HER. She didn’t love him like he did. He had always loved him. But, Draco was tired of living a lie, tired of being lonely. Didn’t his lover understand that? He needed to know.

Draco smiled sadly as he listened to his lover. He always said the same things. He promised he would leave her, that he only loved Draco, that one day they would be together forever. Draco caressed his lover’s face and leaned into the hug that was offered. He closed his eyes as he pretended. Pretended what his lover said was true, pretended that he wasn’t just being used by the only man he had ever loved. He didn’t think he could wait any longer. He was tired of sharing his love, his life, and never being able to actually share it at all. Did his lover know how much pain he caused him? He needed to know.

Draco stared at his phone, willing it not to ring. Praying he wouldn’t call. If he called he knew the cycle would start again. He would come over. They would make love. He would promise him the world if he only waited. She would call…He would leave…Draco would cry. He begged God to let him stay at home today. He loved him but, he was slowly dying inside from what his lover was doing to him. Did his lover even care. He needed to know.

Draco stared at his lover, determination and sadness shining in his silvery depths. His lover stared at him with longing and sadness as Draco took his spare key from him and told him to never come back. Draco was tired of not being able to have his entire lover. He had given him everything and all he got was half a man. He got the half that snuck behind his wife’s back and lied and cheated and broke his heart. No more though.

Draco smiled as he stepped out of his apartment for the first time in days. His life had changed now that he was out of his life. He could move on from the pain and find someone who could give him everything and expect nothing. He stared at his ring finger. The emerald band his lover had given him shining.

He walked until he saw the river. He kneeled down and stared at his reflection. He seemed sadder but a lot wiser than he had been three years ago, when it had all started. He fingered his ring again and with a sigh pulled it off. He murmured some words and dropped his ring in the river, watching it rush away in the current and sink. He got up off his knees and walked onwards. The words he had murmured were:


“I loved you Harry Potter
But, why don’t you stay where you belong, buried and lost in the river of my mind and heart.”
