Love Thy Enemy

***Welcome readers! As promised, a new Lucius and Hermione fic. : )
I am having loads of fun writing this one, and I hope you have loads of fun reading it! The first ten chapters are completed, I know, I don’t usually write very long fics, but this is turning into more fun than I thought when the original idea for it struck me. I look forward to reading your comments.

CHAPTER ONE: Love Thy Enemy

Kinglsey Shacklebolt, head of the Ministry of Magic, made his way into the head courtroom to oversee the morning’s cases. The courtroom was called to attention when he stepped onto the dais and looked out at the crowd. His shoulders slumped and he took his seat, banging his gavel three times to open court.

“You two. Again.” He said, glaring down at the two people seated in the center of the room. “Bailiff, read the complaint, as if I haven’t heard it before.”

A large Samoan man stepped up beside the pulpit and unrolled a scroll, then read loudly for all the room to hear.

“First case on the docket is case number 49498, the Ministry of Magic versus Lucius Abraxus Malfoy and Hermione Jane Granger. The charges stem from an incident in Hogsmeade Village on the thirtieth of March whereby witnesses say that the two engaged in a heated exchange of words and wands were drawn in a public place with the intent to harm. The two were taken into custody and charged with disorderly conduct and attempted assault. They await your sentencing Sir.” The bailiff stepped back into the shadows of the room.

Kingsley was breathing deep, slow and steady as he shook his head at the two defendants before him. Neither looked repentant.

“This is the sixth time the two of you have been brought before me to answer for the exact same charges. Do you think the ministry has nothing better to do than to deal with your tempers?” He asked.

“I apologize, Sir.” Hermione said. “But he started it.”

“You are the one at fault here you filthy little….” Lucius cut himself off with a glare, knowing that if he continued it would not look good for him.

“Can you speak to one another without arguing or insulting the other?” Kingsley asked, knowing that had their wands not been taken before they entered the courtroom they would no doubt have drawn them eventually. He was weary of dealing with them. He had to find a way to sentence them that would keep them off his docket and the rest of the world safe. “I will think on an appropriate sentence for the two of you, and this case will reconvene tomorrow morning at nine.” Kingsley banged the gavel once and the bailiff escorted them from the room.

Hermione was nervous, Kingsley always issued them a sentence immediately. It was always community service and fines.

“I promise you Ms. Granger, if I have to spend any time in Azkaban because of you….” Lucius was grinding his teeth as he threw his cloak around him and retrieved his cane from the guard

“I’m sure they will be happy to see you return.” She spat, returning his icy glare with one of her own.

“I grow weary of that sharp tongue of yours you frumpy little shrew!” Normally Lucius would not waste his time arguing with someone so beneath him. But the feisty little mudblood witch pushed his buttons in the worst way.

“And I grow weary of your arrogance you overgrown peacock!” She snatched her wand from the guards hand and stomped away.

“That one is quite the handful.” The guard said as he leered at Hermione’s backside as she walked away. Lucius curled his lip and stared down his nose at the man.

“You are disgusting.” He sneered, shoving his hands forcefully into his fine dragon hide gloves as he turned and exited himself.

“Minister Shacklebolt, did you call for me?” Harry Potter stepped into the Minister’s office, closing the door behind him. Kingsley looked up and smiled.

“Hello Harry, have a seat.” He said, directing the young man to the leather chairs in front of his desk. “I need your advice on something.”

“I’m happy to help in anyway I can, but sir I’m an auror, not a politician.” Harry said, crossing his ankle over his knee.

“It’s not a political matter Harry. Hermione and Lucius were back in my courtroom this morning.” He said on a weary sigh.

“Oh yes, the incident in Hogsmeade.” Harry chuckled. “I do hate having to arrest my best friend.”

“This is the sixth time they have been in my courtroom over this Harry. My understanding is that it happens on a regular basis, it just doesn’t always escalate to the point that they are brought before the court.” Kingsley crossed his arms and stared at the mobile of the solar system circling above his desk, a gift from his nephew. “It has to stop, and I have to find some method to get through to them.”

“That will be difficult I’m afraid. Lucius and Hermione are highly intelligent, clever and passionate people. With their volatile past, they just combust when they step into the room together. If it weren’t for the age difference and Lucius’s complete hatred of anything muggle, they would probably be perfect for each other.” Harry laughed.

“Interesting.” Kingsley said, a sly smile spreading across his lips. “Thank you very much Harry, you have been more helpful than you will ever know.”

“Alright, not sure what I said, but I’m glad it helped.” Harry said a confused look on his face.

“Could you tell Arthur Weasley to come see me?” Kingsley asked. “I need him to bring me something from the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts collections.”

“Sure thing. Sir, you aren’t going to send Mione to Azkaban are you?” Harry asked, concerned for his friend.

“No, but I am going to settle this once and for all. I do not want to see either of them on my court docket again.”

Harry nodded, curious about how he intended to keep the two from tearing in to one another in the future. Short of completely obliviating the two of them, he couldn’t see it happening.

So, I promised to bring Lucius out to play again…..but beware, he doesn’t play well with others, especially not muggleborns. At least not at first. : )
