The magic of truth

Harry Potter stood at the window of his dorm room, staring out at Great Lake. It was the end of his fifth year and nothing had turned out like he thought it would.

He was an outcast for most of it. And now, he was minus a godfather.

He closed his eyes and thought about what Dumbledore had told him, everything. The Prophesy, what his life was now going to have to revolve around. Stopping that madman.

Turning, he gave a little grin at the two people standing in the doorway.

"Hey, guys," he greeted his two best friends.

"Hi, Harry, how are you doing?" Hermione Granger asked, concern evident in her brown eyes.

"I'm okay, for now," he replied, sitting on his bed next to Ron Weasley, his other best mate.

"I need to tell you guys something. Something that Dumbledore told me, but not here." His emerald eyes showing their seriousness.

A few minutes later, they were in the Room of Requirement, sitting on a plush sofa.

"Okay, this is hard to explain. I wish I had a Pensieve like Dumbledore, so I could just show you." And just as he said it a Pensieve appeared in front of him.

"Well, that's helpful," Ron quipped, staring at the engraved bowl.

Harry stared at the Pensieve and thought of one more thing, and appearing next to the deep marble bowl was a thick, old book.

"What is that?" Hermione asked.

"The how-to guide," Harry answered with a small grin.

After reading the small section on how to remove a memory, Harry pressed his wand to his temple and pulled out a thin, silvery thread of memory.

Placing it in the bowl, he looked at his friends and they all tumbled in.

They all watched as Dumbledore told Harry about the prophesy and what he was destined to do, to kill.

When they all came out again, no one knew what to say first.

"Blimey, Harry," was all Ron could get out.

"Yeah, I know, I want to ask him if he is sure." Harry looked at Hermione and noticed she was deep in thought. "Hermione, what is it?"

She glanced up, then moved her eyes away. "I... well, I have read a lot about memories and how they are collected and memory charms... that sort of thing. And well, in that memory, when Dumbledore showed you his memory of Trelawny, there were fuzzies and scraps in the memory. That only happens one way." She stopped, as though not wanting to go on.

"What, Hermione?"

"If someone alters a memory, it leaves breaks in it... fuzzy moments, scratches. Like an old Muggle movie, when the lines run down the screen. In a memory, when that happens, it has be modified. The memory Dumbledore showed you was tampered with."

"But..." Harry started.

"Dumbledore has studied memory modification. One of the books I read about it was written by him, on how to discern if a memory has been modified. He had to have known that the memory was tampered with, Harry."

Harry stood and walked the length of the room, running his hands through his already messy black hair.

"Harry..."

"No, Hermione! He has been lying to me, not telling me things for the last five years! He has kept me in the dark, ignored me!" Harry stopped, as though reining in his anger. "And now that I know he faked that... How can I believe it? How can I believe anything he says?"

"I wish we had the actual prophesy, from the Department of Mysteries. There is no way he could have tampered with that," Hermione thought out loud.

"Rub it in, Hermione." Harry gave her a pained look.

"Oh, Harry, I'm sorry! I didn't mean it that way! I just meant that you can't tamper with prophesies in those orbs because they are put there by an oracle, which you can't corrupt and... oh." Hermione's eyes went wide and her mouth made a perfect little O.

"What, Hermione, are you okay?" Ron asked, waving his hand in front of her face.

"Okay, when a prophesy is made, an oracle, who... by some form of ancient magic that no one has been able to understand, hears the prophesy and makes the orb that they are kept in. If we can find the oracle who made the orb for your prophesy, they may be able to tell us what is really said and if Dumbledore is lying to you," Hermione explained, her whiskey colored eyes still wide.

"And just how to we find this oracle?" Harry asked, a look of determination on his face.

A/N: Well, that is the first little part. It is a tad boring...but worry not! It will get quite interesting and soon! :D I hope you guys like the trio paired with smexy Death Eaters.
