The Lost

A/N: Hey people ^_^ This is my first fanfic. That having been said, I **want** constructive criticism (if you have it). Flames, however, will not be tolerated...They will be used to melt marshmallows, which will placed methodically all over the flamers' faces...(that would feel None-too-pleasant, btw ha ha). Read, review, rejoice...etc...Enjoy. Also, if you have any suggestions for this fic, lemme know...I plan for this story to go on for quite some time....though if my reviews reveal that it is utter garbage, I may change my mind haha ^_^ Anywho, i'll stop rambling now and let you read! :D

Chapter 1: The Lost.

After what felt like months’ work of careful, quiet examination, Hermione believed she’d finally figured out, in its entirety, the complicated web of spells keeping her confined to the dank little chamber she sat in. Taking a deep breath of the stale air, she stood and faced the door. Ready…set…GO. She began dissolving each spell piece by piece, knowing that her time was limited, and guessing the probable penalty if she was caught. Shuddering, she forced the thought out of her head and continued at a slightly more rapid pace, fingers and wrists flicking and twisting with unspoken wandless magic. Each second seemed to take hours, and her heart hammered away almost painfully against her chest as she carefully wove her way through the tightly-knit spells. As she finished the last incantation, she held her breath and felt the adrenaline coursing through her veins. For a few moments, nothing happened…Please…please…finally she felt the last of the oppressive spells evaporate. She’d finally done it! There was no time to waste in rejoicing, though. If she were going to get out of this hell, she knew she’d have to do it before the next shift of Death Eaters came to do their rounds.

Quickly casting a silencing spell on the rusty metal door in front of her, as well as on her shoes (if you could even call the scrappy little things “shoes” anymore), Hermione braced herself, not knowing what to expect on the outside. Her mind quickly filled itself up with all of the various, and equally unpleasant, possibilities. Half-expecting a screeching alarm to go off, or a Death Eater to be standing directly outside, waiting for her, she pushed open the door…

Silence.

Looking outside of her room for the first time since her capture, she noted how much larger the castle seemed to be than she had remembered…Randomly choosing a side, Hermione began running blindly down the damp, filthy corridor. Hogwarts used to be a safe place, but not anymore…She had been locked in her solitary little cell ever since Hogwarts had fallen to Voldemort and his Death Eaters. She didn’t remember much about her capture, save the faces of her former classmates, and then-comrades, as they fell one-by-one to the Death Eaters. Their faces were burned into her mind: screaming in pain, eyes rolling back, collapsing and receiving the killing curse from the Dark Lord himself. Recalling the face of a particular red-haired companion, as he was crucio’ed into insanity, she stumbles and chokes back a sob. Forced out of her reverie, Hermione takes in her surroundings…

...Oh…Oh no…Where…Her heart stops...How can that be possible?

She frantically tries to reason with herself. According to Hogwarts: A History, it would be impossible for the Death Eaters to actually change the layout of the school…right??... Holding her breath, she can hear the blood rushing past her ears. Panic fills her, and her stomach does nauseating flip-flops as she cautiously proceeds to walk forward, determined to keep going, no matter what the cost. As long as I get out of here, I don’t care what happens…
Arms tense and fingers poised and waiting to fend off attacks, Hermione continues down the corridor.

She stops at a strangely familiar door, and reaches her arm out to grasp the doorknob. She suddenly yanks her hand back, resisting the urge to smack herself in the forehead, and checks the door for any malicious spells or hexes. Satisfied, she silences the door, opens it and quickly steps in, closing it behind her.

She then locks it, just for good measure…in case they realize she has left..

The room is pitch black.
“Lumos.” She quietly utters a lighting spell and, after allowing her eyes time to adjust, she looks around the room she has just locked herself inside of.

The room was spacious and clean. There were no doors or windows and the floor was covered in a soft, silvery-grey rug. The room was mostly unfurnished, save for a simple mattress on a wrought-iron bed-frame in the right corner of the room…and a strange metal rectangle, seemingly coming out of the floor beneath the rug, situated directly in the center of the room.

Wonderful, Hermione. Spectacular. Of all the rooms in the whole bloody castle, *you* waltz into *another*---albeit much larger--- holding cell.

Giving in to her curiosity, she takes a few steps forward to examine the strange metal box. As she gets closer, she notices chains and ropes of various sizes coming out of the top and hanging over the edges. Stopping midstep, she feels the hairs on the back of her neck raise up, goosebumps breaking out all over her arms and legs…Shuddering, she shifts her weight and pivots to face the door. She raises her arm, flicking her wrist slightly to unlock it once more. The lock clicks open...Just as suddenly, the lock clicks shut again.

Startled, Hermione takes a shaky step towards the door, arms poised to protect herself.

One step.
..
Two steps.
..
She turns her wrist to perform the unlocking spell again, when she hears the deadbolt slam into place. Before she can take another step, a voice sends her back into darkness.
“Nox.”
