“I want to come home Harry.”
“I know you do Draco, but you can’t, not yet.”
“I have to see you. I’m going insane without you.”
“I miss you too.”
“No Harry, I don’t miss you, I burn for you. There’s an empty space that no one except you can fill.” Declarations from the heart.
“Draco, calm down.”
Harry’s voice was beginning to crack. It was tearing his heart to do this but he had to.
“Calm down? Calm down!” Harry could hear the hysteria in the blonde boys voice. “How can I calm down? You’re an entire country away and you’re telling me to be calm?”
“You’re going to have to Draco.”
“Why? Why can’t I just come home! I’m tired of running Harry, so tired.”
“I know. I’m sorry Draco.”
“You haven’t done anything.” Confusion encased the silence on the other end of the line.
“Not yet I haven’t.” Harry was resigned. There was no keeping it from him now.
“What are you talking about? What’s happened?” Panic.
“You can’t come home Draco.” Harry murmered.
“Yet. I can’t come home yet.”
“No Draco. Not now, not ever.” A cry of excruciating proportions. Harry’s own face was streaked with silent tears, eyes filled to the brink with anguish.
“But… Harry!” Harry’s voice was almost indistinguishable through Draco’s relentless sobbing.
“I’m so sorry.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too.” Whispers in the night. “Which is why I have to do this. Don’t look for me. In the morning I’ll be gone.” A gut-wrenching scream filled Harry’s ear-piece.
“HARRY! DON’T LEAVE ME!” The raw emotion in Draco’s voice was overwhelming. Harry succumbed to it. The tears flowed freely, cascading down his cheeks as he weeped with Draco.
“Draco! Draco! I LOVE you. Never forget that.”
“But… why?” Draco’s wracking sobs had ebbed to a steadily flowing river. His voice quivered with sorrow.
“When there’s nothing left to burn you have to set yourself on fire.”
The line went dead. Draco’s screams could be heard streets away, but Harry was silent, albeit still weeping, tears running rampant, unchecked across his pale face. He turned and faced him. Him. He who had forced Harry to take the only action available to him. Harry stared unabashedly into the steel grey eyes of Lucius Malfoy.
“Where is he.” It was not a question, it was an order.
“I will never tell you.”
“You hasten your own demise, Potter.” He spat the last word out like it tasted of something awful.
“I hasten my own freedom.” Harry glared intently.
“Well, well. Harry Potter, the people’s hero, saving his own neck for once. Gone off the masses have you?”
“Everyone I loved in this world is dead. Apart from one.”
“My son.”
“Yes, your son. And I would rather die then let you get him.”
“You’re a fool Potter. Once I’m finished with you I’ll get him.”
“You’ll do nothing of the sort. Draco is protected by more powerful enchantments than you could begin to imagine. You will not find him.”
“TELL ME WHERE HE IS!”
“NEVER! There are things in this world worth dying for. ” Harry’s green eyes blazed defiantly. “And I will die before I betray him! You don’t know what love is. You have your devotion, your allegiance, but you don’t understand love.”
“AVADA KEDAVRA!”
Time stopped. Harry’s body flew backwards in a gentle arc, bathed in green light, crumpling against the wall. His eyes fluttered closed. He was slumped, motionless. Harry Potter was no longer ‘the-boy-who-lived’.
Malfoy sneered and swept from the room, but not before muttering, “Stupid boy. Love, as if it could have saved him.”
