Working with a Vampire

This is a CHALLENGE fic! Basically I have to write a Harry/Draco creature fic thats set in the future and I have to finnish it in under two months and make each chapter more than four pages long. I hope to succeed. its in challenges/requests under challenge/request by Ayra Chan if anyone wants to read the challenge.

Guard Duty.

Draco growled, yes actually growled at his Father and watched him hawk like from the lower kitchen pantry.

“Come on son, there’s nothing to be afraid of.”

The growling increased in pitch and volume and Lucius Malfoy ran a frustrated hand through his hair and glared at the nearest House elf, “Send for Snape! Get him here in any more than ten minutes and I’ll kick you from here to Kingdome come, understand?!”

The House elf bowed and scuttled away to quickly for Lucius to get a hit in. He growled himself and turned back to his son. “Come on out Draco, breakfast is waiting.”

Draco actually roared at this and attempted to kick the walls of the pantry down, sending plates of food hurtling across the floor.

***

“Have you had any guests recently Malfoy?” Snape shouted over the sound of crashing plates and cracking shelves.

“What’s that got to do with my son?” Lucius cried, jumping back as a bottle of sauce splattered across the floor.

“Just answer the question Malfoy!” There was no love lost between these two men. Equal favourites of the Dark Lord Lucius had always envied Snape and had never forgiven him for betraying their lord as he had in the end. However he was one of the only clever wizards he knew who dealt in dark magic and wasn’t in Azkaban.

“I’ve had one of the ministers top secretaries staying for a few days but he left this morning.”

“Did he eat much?”

Lucius frowned, “What kind of ridiculo-”

“Answer the question!” Snape roared eyes bulging. Malfoy, so snooty, so superior, so bloody good at avoiding questions.

“Well no, I suppose he didn’t, I mean he ate the odd mouthful but he said he had a nasty stomach condition, he was rather pale.”

Snape closed his eyes in a mixture of horror and frustration. “And did he ever leave the house?” He asked in a strained, quiet voice.

“No, I mean his job was to-”

“He didn’t leave at all? Your certain of this?”

“Yes. Snape what is this in aid of?”

A screech suddenly rent the air and as one they turned to witness Draco licking frenziedly at a trickle of blood running down his hand.

“That...is what its in aid of.” Snape said quietly.

Ever so slowly Lucius turned to look at Snape, horror seeping out of his silver gaze.

“No, oh no Snape please, please no!”

Snape shrugged and continued to look sorrowfully at his fellow ex death eater.

“No, he, he’s going places in the ministry you know that Snape, his campaign for minister was going so well, he has it all in the palm of his hand-”

“Not anymore, I’m sorry Lucius, not any more.”

“Stupid, insubordinate boy! What made you think that you could just walk into that kind of situation unsupervised and unaided!”

Harry cringed in the hospital bed as his boss flung every insult he could think of at his famous employee.

“A house of Banshees, A house of GOD DAMNED BANSHEES POTTER!”

Ow, that hurt, as if his ears hadn’t suffered enough with the banshees wailing, now his boss was actually screeching.

“No more stupidity like this Potter, in fact you will not have the chance for any more acts of stupidity for a VERY long time!” Brian McDorsey’s jowls shook at this last proclamation, his face scarlet and sweaty.

“I’m really sorry sir, I thought I could handle it and sort it out a lot faster if I didn’t have to wait for a team of aurors.”

“Well you were mistaken weren’t you Potter, do you know how long it took us to track that particular group down? You’ve just chucked six months of work down the drain! Well I tell you Potter, you and that hero complex are going straight to the bottom!” And with that he wiped his forehead on a yellow handkerchief and left.

Harry knew his boss didn’t mean any of this, he was a big softie really and had great respect for Harry’s ability to deal with magical creatures. After leaving Hogwarts and having the final show down with Voldemort (something Harry rarely ever tried to think about) he had made his way into the select group of Aurors that dealt with magical creatures. Of course he was still learning and didn’t know half of the things that he should, but his fighting ability was faultless and so he was a valuable member of the me creatura auror team.

McDorsey couldn’t afford to lose Harry, he was invaluable.

Harry stared angrily down at the documents before him. They’d been waiting on his desk when he’d come back in to work that morning.

“Babysitting? I have to go and baby sit a magical creature?!”

His partner Lisa bit her lip and gazed at him sadly. “It’s not really babysitting, its just...well making sure they stay within the law and are safe to society.”

“It doesn’t even say what kind of magical creature I’m guarding though, just tells me to be in the floo room at ten o’clock. God how long am I gonna be doing this?” He shoved his hands roughly through his unruly hair. Never in a million years had he thought O’Dorsey was serious.

“Well its ten to ten so I’d get your ass over there, no matter what your feelings on the job, we get paid by the family for this type if thing so I wouldn’t be late.”

Harry muttered an obscenity under his breath and kicked back his chair. “This better not be for long.” He grumbled slouching out of the room.

His partner smiled, he was so cute when he was angry.

***

Harry coughed and spluttered his way out of the unknown fireplace and dusted himself off. He’d stumbled into what looked like a very plush, very expensive room. He frowned, he wasn’t dealing with a werewolf then and most probably not a banshee, which was a relief.

He glanced at the door as it opened slightly, in came a tall woman with short ice blond hair and a look that gave the impression she had something evil smelling under her nose. Narcissa Malfoy.

She looked pointedly at the sooty carpet before saying in a high pitched, icy voice “Why Mr Potter I hadn’t realised you’d managed to bumble you way into the ministry?”

Harry blushed and hid his sooty hands behind his back. “Am I at the right place? Do you need a guard?”

She tilted her head, “yes I’m afraid we do, not to worry though Potter, your perfectly safe here. My husband isn’t quite stupid enough to kill an aura in his own home.” She smiled contemptuously again and beckoned that he follow her out of the room.

Harry blushed again at the thought that she could read his mind so easily, he hadn’t wanted her to pick up on his slight feeling of unease.

He wondered, was Lucius Malfoy the creature he would be guarding? He couldn’t remember ever reading about him on the list of dangerous magical creatures...but still Malfoy’s weren’t ones to broadcast these things.

She took him up a long flight of stairs and through a confusing maze of hallways carpeted in all the colours of the rainbow it seemed. It was very soft and plush, Harry had the strange desire to take off his shoes and sink his feet in it.

“Here we are dear,” She halted outside a door that reposed next to a very tired looking Lucius Malfoy. “The guard is here now darling, best you get some rest.”

Malfoy wiped his hands over smudged dark eyes, pale cheeks jutting into his palm. Very slowly he turned to look at Harry. “You?! What on earth are you doing here? Surely your not...”

“He is darling and his credentials are astounding so the ministry have told me. Give him a chance if only to afford you some rest, if he doesn’t hold up to the task then we’ll get somebody else.” Narcissa said soothingly running a soft hand over her husbands hair.

“Yes but...It’s Potter.” The senior Malfoy said gazing at Harry with not a certain amount of dislike in his silver eyes. “On principle alone I cannot have him in my house.”

Harry was feeling extremely awkward by this point, if not a bit angry as well. “Look Mr Malfoy, with all due respect I don’t like you. I know exactly what kind of man you are and I know the only reason you aren’t in prison is because of a lot of heavy handed bribery. I’ve seen you in action and I know your capabilities!” He stopped and glared at Malfoy with such hate in his eyes that the elder man was briefly taken aback.

“On my principles alone I should not even be in your presence and believe me I have no desire to baby-sit some unfortunate creature, but I’m willing to do it for the sake of my job, are you willing to do it for the sake of whatever’s in there?”

The elder man just stared at him for a moment, “ Don’t preach to me Potter! I know exactly what’s best for my family and what is not, don’t you dare insinuate that I don’t!”

“Well then let me guard whatever’s in there, at least for today, your too tired to do it yourself and I can‘t allow you to guard when your tired, its a serious potential danger.” Harry said pragmatically.

The older man sighed, frustrated, “One day Potter! Then your out of here!”

Harry nodded, “Anything I should know?” He asked a bit worried about the fact that know one wanted to tell him what this creature was or for that matter who it was. Although he was beginning to suspect who it might be.

“Your a guard Potter, well equipped for any situation. I’m going to rest.” And with that Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy left Harry to deal with whatever was in that room.

Taking a deep breath he placed his hand on the door knob. It was an intricately carved, silver object and the filigree design bit into his hands. Slowly he pushed open the door and stepped through.

The room was almost in total darkness. He could just barely make out the large presence of a bed and its hangings at one end of the large room. Stepping forward a little clumsily he tried to work out what to do. He could turn on the lights so as to see where the creature was, after all it could try to attack him at any moment. But then the room may be in darkness for a reason. Some magical creatures couldn’t expose themselves to light, for example Ventura’s, although he bloody hoped it wasn’t a Ventura in the room with him.

Quietly he drew out his wand and whispered a night vision spell, he’d hesitated because he wasn’t very good at it. Vision spells had always been a bit of a low point in his training.

He glanced around the room, from what the spell would allow him to see, he deduced that it was another finely furnished room. However the claw mark like looks on the wardrobe door made him freeze momentarily and then look around for the creature in earnest.

Not seeing anything he warily moved across the room keeping one ear and eye out for anything that might be a sign that he was going to be attacked from behind. Too late he realised that he’d left the door open and his heart palpated in his chest, what if the creature had already left the room?

But no, as he neared the bed, the big looming presence on a raised section of flooring, he could just make out the figure of a person lying upon it. Well...tied to it.

“Hello Potter, what the fuck are you doing here?”

Harry squinted, he thought it was Malfoy lying on the bed before him, his hair certainly did glow eerily under the night vision spell, but his voice was rougher, more muffled somehow.

“Guarding you.” Harry said shortly.

The could be Malfoy snorted, “You left the door open”

“I knew you were tied to the bed”

“Did you now, come to take advantage of me then?”

“Don’t start hallucinating Malfoy.”

“Or perhaps your a present?”

“I’m a guard!” Harry snapped pulling up a chair and deducing that it would be worth turning the light on just to get a look at Malfoy and he was pretty sure it was Malfoy lying on the bed now.

It took awhile for his eyes to get used to the light after he removed the night vision spell, Malfoy hissed and spat and arched next to him, it was obvious he had been without light for quite awhile.

His hair hung over his forehead in straggly tendrils and he was beyond pale, his skin was practically translucent and his silver/grey eyes glowed with a fierce intelligence. He was obviously strong, but very thin and a pair of long sharp incisors peaked over his lip.

Harry practically scooted across the room when he realised, but managed to keep from moving more than a few feet away. “You...um, you’re a...”

“That’s right Potter, I’m a vampire, I’m also hungry so if you fancy a nibble?” He managed to look faintly hopefully in Harry’s direction.

“I’m alright thanks.” Harry managed.

“Fine,” He stretched rather vulgarly and collapsed back on the bed. “I haven’t fed since I was turned and my family don’t quite know what to do with me. My money’s on them letting me starve to death, what do you think Potter?”

“It would be better than you killing others.” Harry said shifting uncomfortably in his chair. He’d only ever seen vampire’s face to face twice before, once at Professor Slughorn’s party in sixth year and once during training. Once had been enough, twice had been ghastly. The exercise was to hunt the vampire down before he hunted you down. Harry had only just passed, he could still here the vampires taunts to this day, could still feel the knowledge of someone stealthily wearing him down. Making him want to submit to the inevitable.

“But all creatures must eat Potter, the fox has to kill the rabbit to eat but you don’t see him starving do you?”

“Rabbits are a little different to humans Malfoy.”

“So they say but we’re all animals in the end,” Malfoy said flexing his wrists, “Fancy untying me Potter?” He flipped him a wink, “I’d be very grateful!”

“and you’d show it by killing me I suppose?”

“Oh no, I wouldn’t kill you, I’ve quite a mind to take you as my mate, after all, I don‘t see a better choice wondering around here, do you?”

***

Harry burst into his boss’s office five hours later to find him calmly sifting through paper work.

“How could you?! You preach about walking knowingly into danger when you just allowed me to wander unknowingly into danger!”

“I thought it would do you some good.”

“Do me some good? I was sitting next to a vampire in full heat for ten minutes and didn’t even realise it, if he had claimed me would that have been good for me?”

“Potter you went through enough training to know that when a human has been turned the first thing they do is seek out a mate.”

Harry scratched his head, feeling a little bit foolish, “But I didn’t even know there WAS a vampire in the room until I ventured in there. By the time I realised he was in heat I’d been in there about fifteen minutes. After that of course I tightened his restraints and went and sat as far away as possible, but sir, they’re starving him on that bed. Soon what with the blood lust and the urge to mate he’s going to break free from those restraints!”

McDorsey waved a hand in a bored manner, “Oh I shouldn’t think so Potter, he’ll be too weak. You only have to do this for a month and I’ll allow you back onto the team proper. But I warn you, any more mess ups like the one last week and it’ll be more than babysitting duty you’ll have to complain about.”

“But Sir...”

“Enough, I have things to do Potter, I’ll talk with you in a months time.”

And with that McDorsey went back to his paper work, clearly indicating that it was time for Harry to leave.

***

Narcissa Malfoy had taken Harry aside at the end of his five hour shift and told him in no uncertain terms that he was to come back the next day and continue to guard Draco. Her husband and herself could handle the night shift she assured him but they needed someone there during the day.

So it was Harry found himself pushing open Malfoy’s door again and tentatively peeking his head round to make sure the vampire was firmly secured.

“Hello Potter, come to tempt me again?”

Harry ignored him, walking in and taking his seat in the chair next to Draco’s desk. Pulling out a book he settled down to occupy himself for the next five hours.

“Ah, ignoring the naughty little vampire are we? Snape likes to do that.”

Despite Malfoy’s very obvious attempt to peak Harry’s interest the Auror simply turned the page of his book and carried on reading.

“He’s the one they get to let me out at night, a little stroll as it were. Obviously they consider him more qualified to handle me than an inexperienced Auror.”

Harry continued to ignore him, Malfoy was only trying to goad him into untying him.

The bed rattled ominously and despite himself Harry glanced up, was that... did Malfoy have an arm loose? But no, no he must be imagining it.

Warily he bent his head back down to his book and the room fell silent. Presently Harry began to relax and get into the plot line. It was really rather good, about an Auror who’d been kicked out of the ministry and seemed to be a sitting duck for his enemies to target. And he sure did have a lot of enemies.

Suddenly a sound drew him back out of his book. Just the whisper of silk against cotton, the tiniest sound, but Harry heard it. Glancing at the bed he realised Malfoy was no longer in it! Instantly he was on his feet wand in hand, but a cruel grip round the back of his head stayed him at once.

“Too late for that Potter, much too late.”
