Granger, Why are you crying?
Scene: Hours before Harry enters the Chamber of Secrets.
"All students are to return to their house dormitories at once! All teachers to the second floor corridor immediately!" Professor McGonagall's voice rang through the halls of Hogwarts. While the castle halls and grounds empty out of all human life, except for the dormitories, a pale tall young man materializes. His long dark cloak whips about him as he surveys his surroundings, "The Forbidden Forest", stated Draco Malfoy, "Snape." Draco tucked his small golden time-turner back into his collar shirt and pulled out his wand and lit it. He started for the castle gate, moving faster as he looked at his black crystal watch on his left wrist. He broke into a run, headed for the Potion Master's office.
"..second floor corridor immediately!" rang through the walls and chilled the spine of a young woman who simply appeared in the center of the Quidditch field. Hermione Granger had never been conscious at this very moment. She remembers this moment of her life 10 years ago, it seems eerie to her. She slipped her own little time-turner within her pale grey robes and ran for the castle, "Malfoy heading for Snape, Malfoy heading for Snape", she repeated to herself rushing towards the Dungeons. She hurriedly glanced at the illuminating watch on her wrist that she borrowed from Harry just hours ago, "You have just an hour, Hermione. Do everything you can to help him, Hermione, please." His words whispered through her mind.
Malfoy entered the castle threshold, Snape should be heading toward the second floor corridor, and maybe he can run into him on the way. He pushed harder toward Snape's office hoping he can reach before Snape passes. He enters the dungeon hallway, stopping abruptly before Snape's office door, "Professor Snape?! Professor!" no answer. He whips around as he hears hurried footsteps moving towards him. Please be Professor Snape.
Hermione rushed down toward the dungeons, knowing Malfoy to be close by. Footsteps up ahead, Severus? She pushes harder down the hall, "Malfoy!" she sneered as she stopped feet from him. They both pull out their wands, pointing each at each other’s faces.
"What are you doing here, Mudblood?” scorned Malfoy. But before Hermione could answer, another set of footsteps, this one running, was coming towards them. They both turned to face Severus Snape stopping dead with an expression of utter shock to see his second years in front of him but 10 years older.
"Hello Professor", whispers Hermione. Snape's mouth open as if to say something, then closes it again. He turns to Malfoy looking dumbstruck, then back to Granger, "What... What is the meaning of this...” he mumbles.
"Professor," it was Malfoy who spoke, "In less than an hour, Potter will enter the Chamber of Secrets and face the monster. He will be down there to save the Weasley girl. Professor, you have to prevent him from destroying a book that belonged to the dark lord. It's the dark lord's destruction if he does. Professor, please. Prove your loyalty to the dark lord. Protect the dark lord’s future." Snape looked completely thunderstruck and takes a step back from the futuristic couple.
"Professor Snape, Remember your vow to Dumbledore, be loyal to him. Leave Harry alone, let history run its course. The world, years from now will worsen greatly if you stop Harry from destroying that book!" Hermione looked into Snape's dark eyes, and while Snape looked right back into her eyes, he saw warmth, truth and watery hope. Why does he seem to feel fulfilled looking into those beautiful brown eyes? Why does Granger speak and look at him, like they were intimate? Was that the future?
"Granger, why are you crying?” he whispered softly at her, avoiding Malfoy's angry harsh stares.
"Because, you vow... because you love...” Hermione trailed off, crying freely now. "It's difficult; Severus and I can't tell you. Not now, Severus. I'm sorry. Just please, please leave Harry alone today. Let Harry live. Save us all." She looked back at him now, right into his deep dark eyes and she saw what she needed to see in him to know she had succeeded. Snape's gaze intensified. He turned away from Hermione and looked at Malfoy, "Go back to the future, Draco. Find another way, another time. I'm not helping you today." And with one last deep look at Hermione, his stern face broke into a soft smile, he turned and walked past them into his dark dungeon office, sat down unto his chair in front of the fire, and stared into the flames. Long after the moment had passed, he rested his forehead on his folded arms and whispered, “Hermione..."
