Chapter 1: Seamus

Footsteps could be heard around the house. “Liam?” Sarah asked when she awoke and saw that her husband was not beside her. She lit her wand when she heard distant crying and more footsteps. She walked into her youngest child’s room and saw them soundly asleep. More distant crying was heard.

As Sarah was about to open the door that led to the attic, which was Seamus’s room, when she was startled by a hand on her shoulder. She looked to see her husband standing behind her. “Liam, I heard noises coming from the roof.”

“It’s coming from the attic. It’s the third time I hear it.” He said.

“Really? I’ve only heard it just now.” He laughed at her softly.

“You sleep so soundly that you don’t feel me get up.”

Dream Shift

He thrashed around on the bed as if he was fighting someone that no one could see. A dent in the bed beside him said that someone was there, but he could not see them. The blankets pulled themselves off of his body and he felt something sit on his stomach. He screamed and-

“Seamus! Seamus, wake up! It’s just a dream!” Harry screamed as he tried to shake him awake from what seemed a horrible nightmare. The rest of the boys stood around the bed looking worried and panicking. He awoke with a gasp and his eyes darted everywhere at once. “Seamus, it’s alright.” He whispered as Seamus dived into his arms and silently cried.

“You’re alright now.” Neville asked softly as he too tried to comfort him. “It was just a dream. It wasn’t real.”

“It felt real.” Seamus whispered.

“Why don’t you guys go back to sleep, we can handle it here?” Harry said to Ron and Dean who were still standing there looking uncomfortable.

“Are you sure, Harry?” Dean asked and they left to their beds when he nodded.

“What did you dream about?” Neville asked.

“I don’t remember. I never do.”

Harry walked towards his trunk and pulled out a vile with blue liquid inside. “Here, have some dreamless sleep potion and go back to sleep. I get nightmares too.” He said when they gave him a look to explain why he had the potion in the first place.

“Thanks mates. I’m sorry for waking you up.” Seamus apologized.

“It’s nothing, Seamus, we’re happy to help.” Neville answered.

“Goodnight.” Seamus whispered into the silent room when Harry and Neville got into their beds.

“Goodnight.” They repeated.

The next morning Seamus walked into the Great Hall with a smile on his face as usual. He sat between Harry and Neville and started to serve himself some breakfast.

“How are you feeling today, Seamus?” Ron asked from across the table.

“I’m fine. I’m just glad that I can’t remember that dream.” He replied as he shuddered at the memory of his fear when he awoke.

“It must have been really bad because you screamed worse than Harry does when he has a nightmare. And that it something alright.” Dean added.

“Well, I’m just glad that you’re alright now, Seamus.” Neville said as he gave him a pat on the back.

“What class do we have first?” Harry asked as he looked at his timetable that McGonagall has just passed out.

“Potions with the Slytherins.” Ron groaned along with the others.

“Let’s get a move on.” Hermione said, startling them, not knowing that she was their next to Harry. They just looked at each other before standing up and following her out of the Great Hall.

“Welcome back, students. I can assume that since you are now 6th years that you have more maturity than you did the year before and not so many cauldrons will explode.” At this Snape looked directly at Neville who blushed when everyone snickered. “Today, we will start making a potion called the Heart’s Desire. Can anyone tell me what this potion does? Besides Miss Granger.” He added when he saw her looking eagerly at answering the question. “Mr. Potter?”

“The Heart’s Desire is used to find out someone’s desire. One drop can tell you exactly what that person wants.” He answered surprising the students and Snape. “What? I do read you know.”

“Fine, if you do then you would know what it’s opposite brother is.”

“Yes. It’s called the Heart’s Nightmare. Instead of finding out the person’s desire you will find out something that has happened to them that they either regret or fear. Their worst nightmare will be relived and be told to the administrator.” Harry recited and again the class was shocked.

“Very well. Now as I said, today we shall make the Heart’s Desire. I will call out your partners for this project. Weasley and Parkinson, Finnigan and Zabini, Potter and Malfoy, Longbottom and Goyle, Thomas and Crabbe…” he said and every body groaned realizing that he would put Gryffindor and Slytherin together again.

As they moved around the room to get to their partners, the five Gryffindor boys looked at each other at silently said ‘Good luck.’

“You will write down what the drinker says. Each of you will take one drop and one drop only. We don’t want anymore accidents than we know we will already have. The information will not be shown to anyone else other than myself. Ask them their desire and their reasons why. Begin NOW!” Snape said the last part loudly, scaring the class and starting them on their potion.

The potion took a little more than an hour to make and soon the part that everyone was dreading came. Naturally, the Slytherins made the Gryffindors take it first so they could know that the potion was made right. Not that they didn’t believe that their potions skills had anything to do with it.

Harry took a drop of the potion and his eyes became unfocused and distant. Knowing that these were the signs that the potion worked, Draco started.

“Alright Potter, what is your deepest desire?” he said and awaited the answer to use as blackmail.

“To murder my uncle.” He replied and Draco was shocked beyond belief along with the people close by that heard his answer.

“Why is that your desire?” Draco asked when he got his bearings together.

“I don’t know.”

What they didn’t know was that there were similar answers from the other Gryffindor boys.

(Ron)

“What is your heart’s desire?” Pansy asked.

“To murder my cousin Dan.”

She gasped in shock before saying, “Why?”

“I don’t know.”

(Dean)

“What is your desire?” Crabbe grunted.

“To kill my brother Sam.”

“Why?” Crabbe asked not really knowing the answer was until he looked at the parchment he was writing on.

“I don’t know.”

“You’re mental.” Crabbe said gapping.

(Neville)

“What do you want?” Goyle said boredly.

“To kill Professor Vector.” He said.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Like his friend, Goyle didn’t know what the answer was until he too looked at the parchment. He did nothing but stare at him.

(Seamus)

“Desire?” Blaise said eagerly wanting to know a juicy secret.

“To kill my father.”

“Reason?” Blaise said with obvious shock in his voice.

“I don’t know.”

“Professor!” Five Slytherins yelled at once disturbing the class.

“What is it?” Snape gritted out.

“There’s something you should see.” They said again holding out the papers they wrote on. As Snape glanced at the papers his mask fell and his eyes got wider in shock.

“Follow me.” He said when the potion wore off and started walking out the door. “You’re going to the Headmaster’s office.”
