The Moon

Prompt ( the word of the day Feb 20 2007 ) Apogee

Laying down on a bed made from the soft grass with his coat spread neatly atop, silver eyes stared up fondly at the dimming sky. The barely twinkling stars seemed to try their best to shine brightly against the fading light of the sun. Soon the sky would be an inky blue and the stars would be a bright contrast.

He closed his eyes, taking in the cool evening air, wondering back to when he last allowed himself to enjoy such a simple pleasure. His father was inside, doing whatever it was that he did, but he'd rather not think about that right now. He'd rather not think about his mother, with her beauty, sitting gracefully by the window. Though, perhaps, by chance, she may be looking up to those same stars, wondering about her son's happenings.

Those same stars may be looked upon by him. Him and his bright eyes and messy hair. Perhaps he was laying outside in a bed of flowers, wondering about similar things. But how could he? They were too different to really share such an almost intimate thing.

Reaching an arm up and under his head, pale hair falling over the pare skin of his arm, a soft sigh escaped past his lips. Silver eyes looked back up to the sky, the blue was darkening quickly, reds and yellows bleeding from the horizon, a purple following on the opposite side. It was beautiful. He let a smile curve the corners of his mouth as he watched the stars still fight to win the battle of brilliance in the late sky. He knew they would win, but after hours of holding their title, the sun would be back to reclaim it's glory in the sky.

It was almost sad to think about. The way the stars would shine so beautifully up in the sky at night. So many people would look up at them fondly for a short while then within minutes forget about them completely until the next night. They put on their show only to be forgotten.

He could only truely wonder... would he be forgotten as well.

After constantly seeking to shine brightly for his father, would he ultimately be forgotten in the sea of people that he knew? It seemed quite likely in all reality. Ultimately he would be forgotten. Just another person whom did the deed and paid the price. A name in a book somewhere that no one would bother to read. Completely forgotten in the sea of people who, for their own reasons, went down a path much like his own.

He frowned, it did seem a little pointless. If he dared to take the other path... to go against his father and everything that he had come to know... What would become of him? Would he be accepted? Constantly watched with wary eyes and almost hateful glances? He didn't belong to that world. He wouldn't allow it. Better to be forgotten as one of the many casulties, than be remembered as the one no one liked or trusted. At least in his world, he was known. He was his father's son. He had a last name that gave a certain appeal to it. Not everyone could easily give a name and have people instantly look at you different. He wasn't normal. That was something to surely be proud of.

Then again... He wasn't normal either. He was the undefeated one. He was the one everyone loved, if not feared at least a little. He was the one with the good friends that wouldn't talk behind his back if he failed. He would be praised for his efforts reguardless of the results. He was the bright sun that would easily outshine all the stars in the night sky. Bring light back to the people and never be forgotten. Even though the stars are still there, trying so hard to shine, he will always be the brightest. He doesn't even try. Never has to. That's the worst part.

It's amazing to think that no matter what he does he'll be great. Sickening... No other star can compare to the sun.

Nothing so wonderous would ever happen to the one laying so calmly. He will never amount to so much. His father makes sure to constantly bring up other's whom are better when in his presence. It's not fair, but life never is. Eventually, the sun will burn out. Just like he will die.

Maybe, if he waits, just long enough, he can be like the moon. Soaking up some of the sun's warmth and light. Hopefully one day absorbing so much that he is able to give off his own light. Light bright enough to outshine all the other stars. Maybe he can make his own path. Free of the restrictions that people would try to place upon him. Live forever in the sky with the sun. Be just as bright. Be remembered as something beautiful.

He wasn't just a star. He wouldn't allow that. He was worth more than that... He wouldn't be forgotten. He would be remembered, but not as the one star that burnt out before it's time... but the one heavenly being that could rival the sun. Even if he needed to get assistance from the sun, he would shine. He would be like the moon.

Bright and wonderous.
