He Gets That From Me

“Daddy!” the little brown haired boy cried as his father yanked the warm blanket off of his small body.

“Time to get up.” the blonde, aristocratic looking man said as he flicked on the blinding light.

“No!” the little boy yelled, grabbing the covers back from his father’s grasp and falling back into the plush, warm bed.

“Yes!” his father mocks, “you have to go to school, c’mon I’ll make you frosted flakes.”

The boy shot up from the bed, a huge toothy smile lighting up his face.

“Okay!” he says cheerfully before bouncing out of the room.

The man ruffled the boy’s thick, wild brown hair on his way out, a smile lighting up his own face.

“Did you know that you can tell how a famous person died from the way the horse on their statue stands?” the boy asked before shoving another spoon full of frosted flakes into his mouth.

“Really?” his father said as he turned the page of the morning paper.

“Uhhum” he said, milk dribbling out of his full mouth and running down his chin.

“Don’t talk with your mouth full Caiden” the man scolds, putting the paper down and taking another sip of scolding hot coffee.

“I get that from you,” he said, giving his father and award-winning grin.

Draco smiled, “you get that from me,” he mumbled.

Caiden pushed his bowl farther back on the table before continuing with his non-stop talking.

“I was talking to my friend Bradley yesterday and he told me that tomatoes were a vegetable. But I told him he was wrong because tomatoes are berries.” Caiden said, looking at his father proudly, waiting for the praise that would inevitably come.

Draco grinned, “you’re a genius!” he exclaimed before picking the small body up into his arms and spinning him around.

“Daddy!” he giggled, kicking his legs fruitlessly.

Draco laughed too before putting Caiden back on his feet. “Go get you back pack,” Draco said with a pat on his back.

The little boy took off into the living room, returning a few seconds later with a small red backpack with the words
“Caiden Alexander Malfoy-Potter
Mrs. Taylor’s room 14” scribbled in black marker on the front.

“Ready?” Draco asked, looking down into the big emerald green eyes that reminded him so much of Harry.

He had to look away for a moment to keep his eyes from watering.

“Daddy?” a small voice said and Draco took a deep breath before returning his gaze to the short brunette.

“Yes Caiden?”

“I love you,” the boy said in the same small, sincere voice.
Draco eyes did water as he bent down and enveloped his son into a tight hug.

“I love you more,” he whispered.

“Nope,” Caiden said simply, pushing against his father’s chest so he could see his face.

“I love you to the moon,” he said, his face lighting up with delight.

“I love you to the moon and back again. Twice!” Draco said triumphantly, standing up and putting his hands on his hips.

Caiden stopped to think for a minute, his face scrunching up in concentration.

“Well I love you to in infinity! Beat that!” a look of pride crossing his face once again.

“Ah you got me,” Draco said with a fake sigh.

Caiden giggled before walking to the door.

“We’re going to be late,” Caiden said as they walked out to Draco’s black BMW.

“He gets that from you,” Draco mumbled to himself.

“Be good. I’ll be back to pick you up at 3,” Draco said as he gave Caiden one last hug.

“You know,” Caiden said playing idly with his father’s green tie, “you don’t have to walk me in every day, I’m a big boy now.”

“Yes you are,” Draco said kissing his nose.

“Father!” Caiden said, his face flushing red as he looked franticly around the room to make sure none of his friends had seen his father’s embarrassing display.

“Ashamed of your old man already, huh?” Draco teased before standing up.

“Stay out of trouble.” he warned before strolling out of the school.

“…and please tell Papa that I’m taking care of Daddy for him and that I love and miss him very much. Amen.” The little boy unclasped his hands and pulled the blue rocket ship sheets back before climbing into bed.

“He gets that from me,” Draco said, looking up at the white ceiling.

“Daddy! Come tuck me in!” Caiden demanded.

“Coming!” Draco called back with a smile before walking into his son’s room.
