The Last Moment

The Last Moment

I watch as my husband’s body slumps to the floor in front of me. I scream out in agony as my heart is torn apart, knowing that I’ll never see his brown eyes crinkle when he smiles at me again. I have to fight the urge to rush to his side and hold him, howling. There are more important things to do right now.

Like confront the madman standing over his body, laughing in a high pitched manic way. I back away from him slowly hoping that he won’t notice and turn that deadly wand on me.

I have to do what my husband said before he was stolen from me. It’s important that I get our son out of here. After all, it was the last thing he ever said to me. Unfortunately, he sees me and fixes his evil red eyes right on me.

“Where is he?” he snarls baring his teeth at me like some kind of animal. I spin on my heel and run. The curse hits me in the back and my body is suddenly filled with intense pain. I fall to the ground screaming.

He laughs again as he releases me from the torture of his curse.

“Where is he?” he asks me again. This time I feel him inside my head, trying to pry the information he requires. I fight him, but too late. He pushes past me making towards the nursery. Desperately, I grab at his cloak and ankles. I cry out, begging him not to harm my son. That child is the only thing I have left from my beloved husband. I can’t let him be hurt. I stumble to my feet and pull him away from the door he is about to open. I move and stand in front of it, holding the handle closed. I beg him to kill me instead. Again he holds his wand, points it right between my eyes.

“Stand aside you silly girl…stand aside now,” he says impatiently. When I don’t move he brings the back of his hand down across my cheek. I stumble and he tries to push me out of the way. I can’t stop sobbing now. I beg him for mercy. He’s taken my love, leave me my son.

He loses patience with me. I can see it in his eyes the moment he decides that fighting me is just wasting his time. He holds his wand at me again and mutters the curse that robbed my darling of his life. I see the flash of green light and in the same moment I pray to whatever Gods are watching to protect my son. Before the curse hits me my heart breaks for my child. I pray he’ll survive, I pray he’ll forgive and I pray that he will be happy.
