Learning to Love and LetGo

Disclaimer: I do not own anything you recognize. The world of Harry Potter and everything within it belongs to JKR. I make no money, I don’t gain a claim to fame... I only get to enjoy what reviews that I receive from one that reads it. That’s okay, cause that is all I want.

A/N: I have to warn anyone that decides to read this. It is a sad story, loaded with angst! Expect this story to be sad. If you aren’t in the mood to get teary eyed, then don’t read this.

Draco sat at the edge of the lake. He stared out blindly into the dark, fathomless waters. It was all over. The pain he felt made him bite the inside of his cheek. He couldn’t believe this had happened. The wizarding world was supposed to be protected from things like this. What good was it to be apart of a world that was supposed to be above the Muggle world, if it was not able to succeed in solving problems the Muggle world couldn’t?

He didn’t even like her! He had never liked her. This wasn’t something that he should even care about! She was a Mudblood! He shouldn’t feel this way. Even as he told himself these things, the tears welled in his eyes anyway. Bowing his head, he let the memories of that fateful day run through his head....

...”Miss Granger! You are about to destroy the class with the lack of attention you are paying to your potion!” Snape spoke harshly, drawing the notice of every student in the classroom.

Draco turned around to look at the know-it-all that never made a mistake in Potions. He had his face set in a sneer and was ready to taunt her, but stopped short when he saw her face. She was pale and her breath was coming in short gasps. She had not been her normal self at all this year. Harry moved to her side and leaned close to ask her a question. He spoke so softly, Draco couldn’t hear a thing.

Hermione looked from the potion she had barely begun, to her friend. Draco saw tears in her eyes as she sighed wearily and nodded. Immediately, Potter turned to Professor Snape. “Sir, she needs to go to the Infirmary.” He cast the witch a worried look, which Draco noticed with a raised eyebrow. “May I accompany her?”

Severus scowled as he handed Hermione a pass to the infirmary. “No, Mr Potter. Miss granger is more than capable of seeing to herself, aren’t you, Miss Granger?”

Hermione nodded, and answered softly, “yes sir.” Yet, even as she began to walk from her desk to the door, Draco noticed her swaying on her feet, and her face growing paler by the second. As she passed him, he turned to watch her and acted out of pure instinct as she fainted.

Suddenly, he had cradled her in his arms and was lowering her to the ground even as Weasley and Potter both yelled out and came rushing to her side. Ron kneeled beside her and patted her cheeks. “‘Mione? Come on, luv. Open those eyes! It isn’t time yet. You still have too much to do!”

Draco backed away from the trio with a stunned expression on his face. What was the Weasel blithering on about? So, she was sick? It was nothing that couldn’t be helped by some pepper up potion and maybe a little eye of nuit to change the composition of her face! He sneered at the tacky thought. He would have said it out loud, except that by the way she just laid there when she came to with a miserable expression on her face, he felt an odd sensation of foreboding. Something was indeed wrong.

Snape knelt beside her, and hefted her small frame into his arms, speaking softly as he did so and Draco did catch the words that time, as he was still standing close enough to hear. “Forgive me, Miss Granger. I did not realize how serious your relapse was.”

As he stood, Draco noticed for the first time how slight her form was. She seemed to be just withering away. He watched as the professor left the room, leaving the students staring after him. Turning back, he looked between Potter and Weasel. Harry was reaching out to Ron and speaking softly. “Now, Ron. J-just try to relax,” he said softly. “She’s going to be alright.”

Ron turned his tear-streaked face to glare at Harry. The look that passed between them gave Draco pause. When Ron finally spoke, it was with a voice that echoed pain. “Just shut up, Harry. I may not be that familiar with the Muggle world, but I heard the Dr’s at St Mungo’s... You’re the one who refuses to listen!”

As he stood, His shoulders slumped when Harry returned. “We promised her, Ron! We promised her to make this year the best we could for her. For as long as we could!”

Ron growled, angrily shoving Harry away from him as he answered in a trembling voice. “I bloody well know what we PROMISED, you git! One of the things we promised was to accept what is happening to her and like it or not, Harry, It’s happening!” His voice cracked and he covered his face to try to regain control of himself.

Draco took a step closer out of curiosity. He didn’t want to care what was going on. He told himself that he was only wanting to know the latest gossip. But what he heard next stole the very air from him. “She’s dying, Harry. I’ve accepted it... Have you?” Ron’s voice was no longer a whisper, but spoken in a loud enough voice to elicit gasps from everyone in the room as he turned and strode angrily from the class.

He couldn’t believe his ears. Granger? Dying? From a Muggle illness? But that was impossible. Wizards didn’t get Muggle illnesses. They were immune from every disease, except a few, and if they contracted them, a few good potions had them all healed up in a matter of days.

Turning his confused gaze to the Gryffindor he had once called enemy and only after the war had begun to be able to tolerate, he sneered, “What’s Weasel carrying on about, Potter? What’s wrong with Granger?”

Harry’s eyes held Draco’s for several seconds before he dropped his gaze and stared at the floor. “She’s very sick, Malfoy. That’s all you need to know.”

He made to step past him but Draco blocked his way. If she’s got some communicable disease, Potter, then we should all know what we’ve been exposed to!” He didn’t really believe this, but he had to continue to act the part of the prat. It wouldn’t serve any purpose to let Potter know he cared. He schooled his features to seem as cold and distant as possible.

Harry fell into his trap perfectly. Maybe too perfectly, cause when he turned his face was filled with hatred, and he was in Malfoy’s face in an instant. “Oh, don’t worry, you arsehole! Ferret’s can’t catch cancer!” He turned his angry eyes on the other students who had overheard. “And neither can any other person.”

Turning, he quit the room before Draco or anyone else had recovered from his announcement. He felt suddenly drained of strength and found himself leaning against the desk behind him for support. Cancer? He had heard about it. It was something that was possible to cure in the wizarding world, providing it was caught in time. But if it wasn’t... Collecting his thoughts, he stood and made his way to the library. He had to find out more about this cancer....

.... Now, sitting beside the lake, he let the tears run freely. Okay, he admitted to himself for the first time, ever. So I was mean to her! So I did hateful things and said horrible things! It wasn’t because I hated her. It was because I just thought she was so wonderful, and I knew she’d never want anything to do with me!

A/N: Okay, like I said, this is a sad story. As I am writing it now, i doubt it will be a very happy one, but I felt I had to do it... My MUSE moves me to write strange things at strange times. Forgive me if it is a bit too sad to follow... but believe me, it is going to have some really good parts in it too. For one thing, Draco is going to truly learn the meaning of love... And it will make him a better person in the end.
