Firside Talk
A/N: Here's the first bunny's twin brother. Thanks to Eeyore and knightmare for the beta!!
The fireplace whooshed to life as Severus Snape exited the flames, brushing at the bit of soot that clung to his casual robes.
“Good evening, Severus,” Lucius greeted from his wing back chair.
“Lucius,” Severus replied, nodding his head. He sat in the other chair nearest the fireplace.
“Can I offer you a drink?” Lucius asked.
“Please.” Severus settled himself, accepting the glass of port. “So. Why have you summoned me?”
“I need a favour, my friend,” Lucius replied with a smirk.
“Yes?” Severus asked, curious.
“Yes. I need you to secure the Great Hall for a few hours this coming Friday night.”
“Might I ask what for?” Severus questioned. Then, catching the gleam in his eye, Severus arched his brow. “Lucius, you cannot be serious.”
“I am,” Lucius replied, smiling.
“Let me guess. The head table?”
Lucius tipped his glass towards his dearest friend with a smirk.
Severus sighed. “Is this really necessary?” Severus asked.
“It is. Harry has this list, you see, and it amuses me to add to it from time to time,” Lucius explained.
“A list? A list of…you have got to be kidding,” Severus said, surprise etched in his features.
“I assure you that I am not,” Lucius said. “So, may I count on your assistance in this matter?”
“You know, Luc, we have done some things in our lifetime. Good, bad, indifferent…tell me, why this?”
“Because I wish it,” Lucius stated. “And because it will appeal to Harry’s Slytherin tendencies.”
Severus stared at his friend for a moment, then settled back into his chair. He watched as Lucius freed his hair from its clasp, watched as he shook it loose. He often envied Lucius his looks, but that hair…he would sell his soul to have hair like that, he often thought.
“What’s going on, Luc? I mean, really.”
“I don’t know how it happened, Severus. At first, it was a lark, a kick. A beautiful young man like Harry, wanting me, desiring me…and me being in the position to cater to his whims. Later, we began to spend time together, not having sex, just talking. He’s very smart, Severus. Intuitive. Everything is emotion with him. It was how he was able to defeat the Dark Lord.”
“True,” Severus said. “It was that same passion that often got him into trouble.”
“As you say.” Lucius took another sip of his brandy. “I think I’m falling in love with him, my friend.”
Severus raised an eyebrow. Lucius saw this and laughed softly.
“I know. Caught in a web of my own making. He…he makes me feel alive, Severus, as I’ve not felt in so long.”
“Have you told him?” Severus asked.
“No. But I believe…I am almost positive that he suspects my feelings. And I believe that he returns them.”
“Are you sure, Lucius? Sure that it’s not just a young man’s infatuation with an older lover?” Severus asked, almost as if he were asking something different. Lucius noted this and filed it away for later.
“I am, Severus.”
“Then I think you should tell him. Don’t put it off too long. Do not wait, for you know how short life can be,” Severus answered.
“That I do, old friend, That I do.” Lucius stood for a moment, stretching his limbs and pouring fresh drinks. He moved to stand near the fireplace, staring into the flames. “We had a marvellous time at the chateau,” Lucius continued. “Just the two of us, away from the rest of the world. I worry what the world will say when they find out who their ‘golden boy’ is spending his time with.”
“I don’t think that Harry will care, Lucius,” Severus replied. “He’s the saviour, you know. It affords him quite a bit of leeway. And, even if it didn’t, I believe he would tell them all to piss off, anyway,” Severus added.
Lucius smiled at that. “He would, wouldn’t he? I suppose that I’m worrying needlessly. At least, I hope that I am.” With a sigh of resignation, Lucius walked back over to his chair and sat down. “But enough of me. How are things with you?”
Severus told of this year’s incompetent students, a familiar litany to Lucius. He waited for a lull in Severus’ diatribe, then asked, seemingly offhand, “By the way, Severus…how long have you been fucking my son?”
Severus’ gob smacked expression and subsequent spluttering would go down as one of the best evenings that Lucius had ever spent with the man.
