Prolog

Harry Potter was not a happy young man. While most kids his age enjoyed their summer hols, he loathed them. For it meant that he was once again forced to return to #4 Privit Drive, and the horrible family that lived there. Sure they were his 'family', not that any of them considered him family. Of course that was the only thing all of them were in agreement upon. Harry didn't consider them family either, in fact he loathed them with a passion. People would be surprised to know that he loathed them far more than he did Voldemort.

Yet every summer he found himself forced to live with them. But now, Harry hated them more than he ever had. His Aunt and Uncle had found out about Sirius' death and the subtle peace that he had had since third year was gone. The Dursley's had started to treat Harry worse than ever. Before they had been fearful of what would happen if Harry's criminal godfather found out about his mistreatment, but now that he was gone, they had no reason to fear any retribution. They knew Harry couldn't defend himself, so Uncle Vernon and Dudley had begun to beat him worse than ever. Before Sirius, Vernon had only cuffed Harry to the back of the head. He didn't want to get 'magic cooties' Harry supposed, since Vernon always had to go scrub his skin raw after touching any of Harry's flesh. Dudley on the other hand, had never feared 'magic cooties.' He loved beating on Harry until Harry could barely stand, when his skin was a black and blue calico, his eyes swollen nearly closed, and his breath coming out in wheezes from the bruised or broken ribs.

But this night was the worst yet. Earlier in the day, an owl had appeared at the kitchen window bearing a letter for Aunt Petunia. After reading it she had gone white and had forced the letter into Vernon's hands. After that Vernon and Dudley had beaten Harry to the edge of consciousness before dragging his body to a park several blocks over. There they had left him, broken and battered, shoved up under a large plastic cave-like climb toy. The rain and wind had started up soon after they left and Harry found himself great full that they had hid his body under the large toy, where the wind and rain, which was howling like demons on fresh blood, couldn't reach him. Even though he would remain sheltered Harry knew that he wouldn't survive the night. His ribs were hurt worse than usual, and with every breath he took he could feel blood being forced up from deep inside. There was no way he wasn't bleeding internally.

What a birthday...I wonder what the Order will think when they come for me next week and find that I am no longer at the Dursley's.

Surely the wards Dumbledore was always talking about would have warned them that Harry was in trouble. Wouldn't they? But then Harry realized that if that were the case the wards would have gone off a long time ago, before Sirius, before even his first letter had appeared. I am so screwed...

Laying there in the dark Harry listened only to his breathing and the howling wind, Harry tried to count down how long until his birthday would come. It was hard to tell. The sun had barely set when Vernon and Dudley had begun the beating and by the time they had left him here the moon was almost at its highest point. It had to be shortly before midnight now, maybe it was already past. There was no way to know, his mind felt so fuzzy that he could barely remember his name.

Hours seemed to pass. The night was still around him. Even the wind had seemed to freeze in place, waiting for something, which only it could name. That was when it happened. While the world held still and quiet around him. Harry arched his back, eyes going wide, muscles going stiff and firey-hot all at once. His limbs began spasming and jerking wildly. His thrashing only getting worse, the pain in his muscles building from somewhere deep inside, rolling fire across his skin. He tried to scream and the muscle in his throat spasmed and closed. There was a sudden popping sound and it was as if a damn had broken inside him, power like molten lava burst out of his skin, searing his flesh and the room around him. The heat of his skin built and built until the sand beneath him began to glow. All around him the small world under the plastic-cave was awash in painful white flames. At the back of his mind a small part of him realized the sand beneath him was turning into glass.

The alarms suddenly going off in Grimwald place startled Kingsley. He jumped from his seat, nearly falling out of it. Something had happened. Something bad had triggered the wards, on Harry Potter's neighborhood, at their west boundary. Without waiting for the other members who were scheduled to check in, about forty minutes from now, Kingsley apperated directly to the nearest appriation point at the west boundary.

The moment his feet hit the pavement Kingsley was running. It was easy enough to tell where the source of magic was. The air was heavy with it. The closer he got the more he realized that it wasn't just magic making the air thick this night. The sky was glowing an eerie green, almost the same shade as the killing curse.

Up ahead a playground could be seen bathed in the green light. Shit! This must be the spot... The smoke was thick but Kingsley could just make out a large form moving in the smoke. Slowly Kingsley pulled out his wand. Although he was beginning to recognize the feel of what was hidden in the smoke, it was best to be cautious. As the wind began to move the smoke away, the scene before him became more and more horrifying. The muggle toys were melting into piles of gelatinous goo. The ground beneath his feet was slippery. Looking down Kingsley realized that the sand hand been turned to glass, so hot the fire of the transformation had been. Merlin! This is why there are rules for protective circles to be in place. Why didn't this hatchlings Fo'Mah put up the circle?

Kingsley stepped further forward, whispering spells to cool the air and dispelling the fire. Before him a young dragon lay curled upon itself. It's breaths were coming out in short wheezing gasp and Kingsley was shocked to see the thick dark blood pouring out of it's mouth with each breath. An almond shaped golden eye opened and looked at him blearily.

"Don't worry Liil'Cha, I will get you somewhere safe. No one will hurt you." Kingsley's voice was low and soft. He didn't want to scare the hatchling. As a Rider, Kingsley knew that this was more than a dragon and that at this moment, so shortly after its first transformation, the hatchling would have only instinct to guide them. In a few hours its human mind would begin to surface again. Until then, Kingsley knew he had to be careful. Especially since it was so obviously injured.

Kingsley pulled out a small cell phone and quickly contacted Mad-Eye. The ex-auror already knew about Merlin's Jewels and would be the safest person to have here to do clean up while Kingsley got the young dragon to safety.

AN: This is an alternate version of my other story by this title. As you can already see it starts off vastly different from the first one. This one will update slower than the first but will have some very similar aspects to the story. For those of you who liked Kerr'Laria, she will also show up in this story, so never fear. As for what Merlin's Jewels are, well you'll just have to wait and see.

Here are some translations:
1. Fo'Mah - Parent or Gardian in charge of a Hatching.
2. Liil'Cha - Hatchling or young one.
