Under the New Moon

Chapter One: Birthday Fun

It was a quiet morning for the residents on Privet Drive. The temperature was slightly cool, giving the people time to enjoy the coolness before the heat overpowered. In the gardens of Number Four, a young female was seen tending to the beautiful flowers and veggies.

Rachel Potter had her long black hair drawn into a ponytail and wore her gardening clothes, which were a bit loose on her body. She carefully tugged the weeds out and refreshed the plants by spraying them with water. Her aunt peered out the window and smiled at her niece before she returned to preparing breakfast.

Rachel and Petunia were the only occupants of the cozy home. Petunia's husband and son were locked away in custody, for their serious crimes on one Rachel Potter. Now Rachel was no longer in danger, at least in this world.

See, the young Potter girl was still being hunted down by the most feared Dark Lord of the Wizarding World. He was resurrected just a few months ago, but no word had been passed around since of him. Everything was quiet.

Finally, Rachel stood up and dusted her clothes off, spraying soil on the grass. She headed back into the house, where she saw a pile of presents in the living room. These presents were from her aunt and her magical friends, as today was Rachel's fifteenth birthday. Smiling happily, she joined her aunt in the kitchen.

"Hello, dear," said Petunia with a smile. She had already finished with the pancakes, her niece's favorite breakfast food, and had started on the bacon. "Have a seat. Your guests will arrive eventually."

"Cool!" exclaimed Rachel and she had snagged a few pancakes onto her plate. Applying butter and syrup, she dug in.

As the day wore on, guests kept popping in and out of the fireplace. The Weasleys, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, Hermione Granger, and some of Rachel's fellow Ravenclaws were the ones that stayed the longest. They played games, ate an excellent lunch, and watched the young Potter rip her presents open.

She got her usual care package from Mr. and Mrs. Weasley (a Weasley sweater and some pies), a velvet blue journal from Percy, a box of pranks from Fred and George, a raven quill from Ginny, chocolates from Ron, beautiful Egyptian coins from Bill, a book on dragons from Charlie, a silver phoenix necklace from Hermione, several books from her teachers and Remus, a book written by the Marauders from Sirius (he gave her a wink and told her that he expected to hear about her pranks), and more books from her Ravenclaw friends, though most of them were Muggle fiction books.

"Thanks, guys," replied Rachel with a smile.

After she had put all her presents away, Petunia had cut the cake up and passed out pieces. Shortly after everyone ate dessert, most of them left. The others staying behind to talk to Rachel.

Rachel went to bed that night with a happy smile on her face. She never knew what she would have in store for her for her fifth year at Hogwarts.
