An Arranged Love
Part 1: Goodbye to the Past
7. 7. 7. 7. 7. 7
Draco looked at his father with nothing but pure shock and something akin to horror on his normally indifferent face. The seventeen year old couldn't believe what had just left his father's mouth. 'He can't...no, I can't be expected to do such a thing...no...' Sudden hurt and betrayal washed into his heart, replacing the shock as he lowered his head a moment. 'Damn it all,' he thought bitterly. His father's logic was uncannily correct and he hated the man at this very moment in time for that trait.
Lucius raised an eyebrow at his son's reaction to his words. He had expected the rich and spoiled brat persona to rear its ugly head and have a screaming match, but this calm and reserved reaction unnerved him around the teenager. Whenever that kicked in, Draco was deep in thought and actually thinking about something before opening his mouth. A definite Malfloy trait but nonetheless, rather disturbing from a seventeen year old boy. 'He is not a child anymore,' he corrected himself. 'This course of action will undoubtedly help make him into the wizard I know he can become.'
Holding his hands calmly in his lap, Lucius leveled his son's eye. "Draco, I have given much thought to this since you were but a child. I would not be taking such measures if I were not sure of certain things. Even you must see that."
Draco lowered his eyes, the indifferent attitude coming as a second nature to him now. "Yes, father. I will abide by your wishes."
The elder wizard looked at his son proudly. "Do not fret, this is how your mother and I came to be together as well."
He resisted the urge to snap at his father. "May I be excused?"
Lucius blinked at the edged voice but knew his son had a lot of thinking to do. "Indeed." Draco turned on his heel but before he could get out of the room, Lucius's voice made him pause. "Do not even think about running or anything so foolish, Draco. You know as well as I do that you cannot."
His back straight and rigid, Draco nearly flinched at his father's words but managed to nod once in acknowledgement before leaving the room. 'Run away? I will run away from nothing, not even this.'
His footsteps were quick paced as he went to his room, slamming the door for effect when he got there, scaring many servants in the process. The words 'life wasn't fair' just didn't seem to sum it up right at the moment as he collapsed on his bed and stared at the ceiling of his room. 'Why does it have to be him of all people,' he thought miserably as the night progressed.
With everything that had happened this summer break already, why did his father choose now of all times to announce something like this? The Wizarding world was in chaos, not a single place was safe anymore. He had kept tabs on his schoolmates and honestly, even to him these attacks were brutal and nothing but pure cruelty.
People were getting killed left and right, it was not safe to bring him back yet.
Draco blinked. 'Why am I concerned for that spoiled git?'
The so-called 'Golden Boy' of Gryffindor house was probably waited on hand and foot during the summer. Considering how he acted at Hogwarts, Draco knew that had to be the case. 'He's managed to intrude on my life...again.' Growling under his breath, Draco turned on his bed and closed his eyes, knowing sleep wouldn't find him this night.
Meanwhile, downstairs in his study, Lucius Malfloy rubbed his temples trying to rid himself of the headache that was quickly becoming a migraine. He had heard an earful from his wife after Draco had gone up to his room. Quite frankly, the woman was downright scary when she wanted to be. He loved her dearly, but damn the blasted wench could make him feel about an inch tall.
"I see you still sulk, Lucius."
The blonde smirked lightly, turning his head to his friend. "Severus, I wasn't expecting you. Have a seat."
The potions master of Hogwarts inclined his head before walking over and taking a seat across from his friend, though his eyes didn't leave the fireplace as the flames turned everything a very light shade of crimson within the room.
"Am I doing the right thing, Severus?"
Black eyes glanced over and met gray. He raised an eyebrow. "What are you talking about?"
Lucius sipped his brandy. "With my son...with Potter...this whole situation."
Severus resisted a smirk. Lucius Malfloy was actually unsure of something, someone call the Daily Prophet. He leaned into his chair and didn't take his eyes from his friend, crossing his arms casually. "This is for the best for both of them regarding the circumstances around us. Both Lily and James agreed to this, and I know for a fact that Potter's home life is something that will not be missed."
Malfloy senior smirked. "You know everything."
"Hardly." Severus managed a smirk. "Just observant."
A silence settled between the old friends as they fell into their heads. Surprisingly enough, it was Lucius who broke it.
"After the meeting with Dumbledore, I'll be the one to retrieve him."
Severus shook his head. "Not alone, you won't. He still doesn't trust you after the Tri-Wizard Tournament. I'll accompany you."
Lucius just nodded in his affirmative, knowing that the next few months were indeed going to be anything but dull.
...
Harry closed his eyes a moment as he leaned his head back, trying to block out the pain and get any rest at all. It had barely been over a month since he left Hogwarts and already things were worse then ever before at Number Four Privet Drive. He couldn't wait for the summer to end...then he'd be free of the Dursley's...this time forever. At seventeen, he would be considered an adult and wouldn't have to come back. It was the only thing that kept him going on nights like this.
He shifted, wincing deeply from the soreness of his body. The last 'encounter' with his Uncle's wrath had been only just this morning. It had been so brutal; he could've sworn that even Petunia had been shocked by it from the look in her eyes.
The sound of the lock on his room made him jump slightly, fear manifesting itself within him.
He knew he was strong and well built considering the years of Quidditch but his uncle had size and weight on his side, plus the simple fact that Harry wasn't at his best right at the moment. The door slowly opened to reveal the man and Harry unconsciously shrunk back into his bed, not knowing what to expect from him. Vernon had been downright unpredictable, and he honestly was beginning to think that his uncle had truly gone mad over the course of his last year at Hogwarts.
"Get up. Now," came the dangerously low voice.
Harry nodded and slowly stood from his bed, watching as the man walked towards him. He seemed unnaturally calm and the sixteen year old just waited for the eye of the storm to pass. Something wasn't right.
"Tell me, boy. Do you wish to eat tonight?"
Harry looked to the side a moment before nodding slightly. "Yes, sir."
The man sneered before a fist grabbed his hair and yanked him closer, Harry wincing deeply from it. "Then obey me now and tell me exactly why that bloody bird of yours is out of its cage."
The young wizard blinked. 'Oh no...' He shook his head slightly. "I don't know, sir... Honestly."
Before he could say anything more, he was thrown across the room and hit the wall hard, sliding down from the pain that was already in his body. Damn that man, he was strong despite his appearance. Jade eyes looked through his hair at his uncle who walked up to him once more, a hand grabbing his shirt and dragging him from the room. Harry fought to keep his balance but was caught off guard when the man suddenly let go and he was falling. His body crashed against the staircase and the wall before he landed in a crumpled heap on the ground.
He held his side, as pain roared throughout his body before he opened his eyes and locked onto the gaze of his aunt. The woman seemed panicked for some reason and he resisted asking what was wrong before a foot suddenly crashed in his stomach. Harry coughed deeply as the man above him repeated the action over and over again.
By the time the man stopped, Harry could hardly breathe.
"Get up!"
He opened his eyes and looked at the man helplessly before a hand was in his hair again, hauling him up and slamming him against the wall. A hand enclosed around his throat and he tried to pry the arm off, though because of his health, he could do little more then struggle weakly. The hand, if possible, closed tighter around his throat and he blinked repeatedly, trying to get rid of the lightheaded feeling he was having.
Petunia shook herself from her reverie. "Vernon, stop it! It wouldn't do if he's dead before he finishes at that school," she supplied, hoping her husband would come to his senses.
However, the plea fell on deaf ears as Harry tried to fight blacking out.
...
Lucius looked distastefully at the house before him. "Muggles..."
"Honestly, Lucius. Show some respect," drawled Severus though the potions master wasn't too thrilled himself at being here.
"Tell me, why didn't Dumbledore keep Potter at school when the attacks started? Particularly when his friends were targeted."
"Think about it, Lucius. He's safer here, he's not a target and people don't notice him as much." Severus crossed his arms. "Let's get this over with. Something tells me this isn't going to be a pleasant visit."
Malfloy just hummed his agreement, stepping forward and hitting the doorbell with his cane. They waited in silence for a few moments before the wizard looked to the side at his friend questioningly. He shrugged before knocking sharply on the wooden door, but once again there was no reply.
"Damn muggles."
Severus just smirked.
When the door opened, both were surprised. A middle-aged woman was in the doorway, looking questioningly at the two men.
"May I help you?"
The potions professor took over. "Mrs. Dursley, I presume?" The woman nodded. "My name is Severus Snape, I'm one of Harry's professors at Hogwarts. May we come in?"
The woman looked hesitant as she nodded. "Fine, but make it quick."
Lucius raised an eyebrow at the muggle but walked in, politely nodding to his temporary host.
Severus turned and glanced at the woman. "We've come to speak with the boy, where is he?"
"Well, I-"
"Who are you?"
All eyes turned to the top of the stairs at Dursley senior, who glared at the two men in his entryway. Considering the odd attire, at least in his eyes, he knew they were here for reasons concerning his nephew.
"Vernon, these men are from that school," his wife supplied. "They're here to speak with him."
He shook his head. "Not today you aren't."
Malfloy raised an eyebrow, the trademark Malfloy attitude kicking almost immediately. Though before anything could happen, Severus stopped the wizard from saying something regrettable.
"Mr. Dursley, this is a serious matter. We need to speak with Mr. Potter immediately."
Lucius tuned out the man's reply, knowing the muggle wasn't going to allow them to see the boy with Severus's 'careful' prodding. His blue gaze landed on the stairs and said eyes widened when they saw a few spots of red. Rage flared within the man and he sidestepped Severus to glare menacingly at Dursley.
"Mr. Dursley," he cut off whatever the man was saying. "Tell me where Harry is this moment or I will find him myself."
Severus raised an eyebrow at his attitude change, but didn't comment. The potions master merely crossed his arms, waiting as Lucius intimidated the man. The Malfloy charm at its best.
"Now," Lucius demanded, seeing the man back down easily at the cold voice.
Petunia stepped forward. "Upstairs."
Lucius turned and gave her a nod of gratitude before walking up the stairs, pleased when the man before him backed away in fear of the experienced wizard. Severus followed behind him and he went to the only open door, walking and stopping cold in his steps at the scene. Yes, there was Harry Potter. The sixteen-year-old wizard was lying on his side, his back to them and Lucius snapped from his shock at the sight of blood. The blonde walked quickly and kneeled beside him, turning Harry over slightly and only his habit of keeping an indifferent look kept him from outright gaping at the boy.
"Bloody hell..."
He looked at Severus. "We have to get him to the manor."
With a swift movement and a single spell, they were in the manor once again. Lucius walked from his study, ignoring Draco's shocked look and words before going up to one of the spare rooms, barely hearing Severus go get help. Draco was directly behind him as he walked into a room and laid Harry down gently on the bed.
"Father, what happened?"
Lucius impatiently shook his head at his son. "Get the healer." Draco just stared at Potter. "Now."
The younger blonde turned and ran.
Sighing, Lucius began examining the boy as best he could. 'Damned muggles,' he thought as he impatiently waited for the healer.
